The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, both commissioners said it was too wet to grade. In District 1, Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that the workers will be repairing signs and working on truck #66. He also said that crews would be checking road conditions. Commissioner Gary Larson said that another load of oil for the Durapatcher is being retrieved and this week, workers will be repairing Dent County Roads 3260, 3280 and 3290. He also said that work crews will be repairing downed signs and will be looking for culverts and pipes that are clogged up. Larson said that he received a quote from Bennett Driveaway for the delivery price from Georgia to Salem of $827 per truck for the two new Sterling dump trucks that the county approved buying. The trucks are being bought on a lease purchase finance agreement through Town and Country Bank in Salem for just under $162,000. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he attended a TAC meeting where the emphasis there was on getting a primary seat belt law passed. He said that Paul Frisbee was supposed to be in town Tuesday morning to see what needs to be done at the Judicial Building Annex to get it ready for the Juvenile Office and an additional exit. He will then prepare the drawings for the Commissioners with an estimate of what it will cost. At the last meeting, the commissioners opened chip and seal bids from Donelson Construction Company, LLC and also from Blevins Asphalt Company, but made no decision on which firm they would go with. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in sales tax figures for general revenue for the months of January through April and it is down about 4.42% compared to last year’s figures. The commissioners also approved transferring the money from the Surplus Land Tax Sale account to the holding account to pay the $4,895.97 to Linda S. Bentley and Wanda S. Underhill. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Fourth 2009 Dinner Speaker Series of the Dent County Historical Society continues tonight with dinner at the Pizza Inn at 5:00, then moving to the Salem TCRC with Missouri Department of Transportation Historical Preservation Specialist Russell Wiseman. He will present a power point presentation and be speaking on historical roads and trails in Missouri starting at 6:30. The program open to everyone. For more information, call 729-2545.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their re-organizational meeting Monday evening at the district administrative offices. After the election results were certified, the board elected new officers and they are Wade Jadwin as President, Greg Nash as Vice-President, Chris Heavin as Secretary, and Jack Blackwell as Treasurer. The board then heard and accepted the resignations of band director Andy Weldon and track coach Terri Welch. The board then went into closed session to discuss personnel before adjourning.

The Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center at 200 South Main Street will be hosting Galen Chadwick of Well Fed Neighbor on Wednesday, April 15^th beginning at 4:30 pm. A half-century of industrialized food production, underwritten by cheap fossil fuels, has led to corporate domination of Missouri’s farm production. This relationship must be recast for regional food independence. As sustainability comes to the region, job security will be regained. The Salem Tiger Baseball game with Willow Springs was cancelled Monday due to the weather. The varsity game will be played this Wednesday at 3:00 at Willow Springs. There will be no JV game.

The Salem Track Invitational will be held today starting at 3:00 at the Salem High School Track.

The Salem Golf Team will be at Mountain View starting at 4:00, and the Salem Tiger Tennis Team will be at Willow Springs also starting at 4:00.

Brian Barden hit his first career homer, Albert Pujols added his own solo shot and Todd Wellemeyer threw seven solid innings, as St. Louis edged Arizona, 2-1, in the opener of a three-game set. Wellemeyer (1-1) allowed only one run on seven hits, did not walk a batter and struck out four to get the win. Ryan Franklin secured his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning, as St. Louis won its fifth consecutive game. Kyle McClellan and Dennys Reyes teamed up to throw a scoreless eighth, while Franklin worked around a two-out single from Mark Reynolds to seal the win. These teams play again tonight with St. Louis' Chris Carpenter scheduled to face Arizona's Max Scherzer.

Zack Greinke threw five strong innings to help the Kansas City Royals take a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Indians in the opener of a three-game set.  Greinke (2-0) gave up six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts for the Royals, who snapped a two-game slide. Greinke has 16 strikeouts over 11 scoreless innings in his two starts this season. Mike Jacobs hit a solo home run while Mark Teahen, Billy Butler and Alberto Callaspo each drove in a run. The two teams will play again tonight.

Major League Baseball lost two unique individuals Monday. Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas died at the age of 73 after being found unconscious in the press box at Nationals Park prior to Monday's game against Washington. Also passing yesterday was Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, who pitched five seasons in the majors with Detroit. According to officials, he died due to an accident at his home in Northborough, Massachusetts. He was 54. A Boston newspaper reported Fidrych was killed while working on his pickup truck.

Funeral services for Christopher Polk of Springfield, formerly of Salem, age 26, this morning at 11:00 at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Salem. Interment will be in the Cart Cemetery in Dent County with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Christopher Robert Polk Memorial Fund at Town and Country Bank with proceeds going to the Salem High School Marching Band. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem.

Memorial services for Joe Eldon Adams of Salem, age 58, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Memorials may be made to Myrtle Adams for funeral expenses.

Funeral services for Robbie Scheider of St. James, age 29, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Adams Cemetery in rural Phelps County. Memorials may be made to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation.

Funeral services for Willis Franlin Pierce, Sr. of Rolla, age 99, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 Friday. Interment will be in the Hooker Cemetery in Hooker, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the family of Willis Pierce, Sr.
