On Thursday, April 10
th a 14-year old Shannon County youth lost his life in the Mill Creek arm of the Loggers Lake. According to the Missouri State Water Patrol news release, at 12:30 in the afternoon, 14-year old Kenneth Davidson of Bunker was holding onto a metal cable while crossing the normally shallow Mill Creek arm of Loggers Lake. Davidson lost his footing due to higher than normal currents. He was able to hold onto the cable for a short time before losing his grip and being swept downstream. Davidson was located at 2:00 and pronounced dead by Coroner Tim Denton of Shannon County. Located by First Responders Davidson was tangled in a root wad in the middle of the creek about a mile down from the accident site.
The instrumental and vocal music departments of Salem Junior High attended the annual music festival this past Saturday at the Lewis and Clark Middle School in Jefferson City, Missouri. Earning superior “1” ratings were Jeri White for a clarinet solo; Becky Watts for a girl’s vocal solo; Adam Wood for a boy’s vocal solo; and the Boys’ Double Quartet composed of Adam Wood, Jacob Raulston, Jacob Kettner, Canyon Goodbar, Jesse Ryce, Mitch Lo, Sammy Ibrahim and Evan Parsons. The groups were under the direction of vocal music instructor Catherine Dent and instrumental instructor David Samson. Congratulations!
Eight Dent County volunteers invested some 20 hours each to better prepare themselves to help others during emergencies and now qualify as Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers. The eight include Lindee Sprong, Charles Smith, Carolyn Boyle, Mark Smith, Deb Smith, Ed Barton, Joanne Barton and Rebecca Burke, all of Salem, took advantage of a three-day course. Certified CERT instructor Terry Bruno taught the course. The class was held March 28th through 31st at the Dent County Fire Protection District Firehouse #2 in Salem. The class was sponsored by the Meramec Regional Planning Commission in partnership with the Dent County Emergency Management Office and the Dent County Fire Protection District. As has been noted in past disasters, a local community should be prepared to take care of itself for the first 72-hours of a disaster. That’s about how long it takes for state and federal resources to be mobilized. “CERT teams ensure that trained volunteers are available to fill that void and provide the best assistance and care possible when disaster strikes. The Salem Ranger District of the Mark Twain National Forest is seeking your comments on a proposal for the Loggers Lake Project. Loggers Lake is located in Shannon County about five miles southwest of Bunker. Loggers Lake is 22 acres in size and has a maximum depth of 31 feet. It is located on the Mill Creek drainage on the Salem Ranger District and is fed by perennial springs. The Salem Ranger District is proposing to reduce levels of invasive aquatic vegetation through water level draw downs from 46 percent to 10 to 20 percent, deepening the lakes shallow areas to a depth where light penetrates may reduce the severity of plant problems, and adding aquatic herbicide to reduce the amount of nuisance aquatic vegetation. The plan also includes replacing two boat ramps, reconstructing an accessible fishing pier in the picnic area, and the construction of a fixed concrete fishing pier in the campground, creating fish structures, and the repair or replacement of the gate control water control device. You are invited to comment on this proposal before the analysis has been completed and a final decision has been made. The Salem Baseball Tigers Tournament scheduled for this past weekend was postponed due to wet grounds and cold temperatures. The Tigers have still only played three games this year and are 3-0. The Tigers will travel to Mountain Grove today at 4:30 to face the Panthers in SCA play. Tomorrow they will host the Willow Springs Bears in a makeup game at the Salem High School Baseball Field Complex. You can hear these games on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.
The Salem Tigers Golf Team will be at Mountain Grove this morning at 9:00, while the Jr. High and Sr. High track teams will be Steelville this afternoon starting at 3:30.
John Bowker continued his dream debut in the majors by driving in four runs, as the San Francisco Giants held off the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4, in the conclusion of a four-game set at AT&T Park. Tim Lincecum (2-0) picked up the win for the Giants, allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings. The young right-hander fanned 11 and walked just one batter en route to the victory, while Brian Wilson tossed the ninth to earn his third save. The loss went to Joel Pineiro (0-1), who was shelled for six runs and 10 hits in just 3 2/3 innings in his season debut for the Cardinals. Pineiro, who was sidelined with a shoulder injury, came off the disabled list just in time for the start. Kelvin Jiminez was sent back to Memphis to make room for Pineiro on the roster. Ryan Ludwick had two hits -- including a solo homer -- and drove in a pair of runs for the Cardinals, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. The Cards are off today.
Brian Bannister tossed a complete game, and the Kansas City Royals ruined the season debut of Minnesota's Francisco Liriano with a 5-1 victory over the Twins at Kauffman Stadium. Bannister (3-0) allowed just one run on three hits, while walking one and fanning three in the effort. The South California product has been superb thus far, having yielded just three runs and 10 hits overall in consecutive wins against Detroit, the New York Yankees and Minnesota. Billy Butler reached base safely in all four at-bats for the Royals, with an RBI single and three walks to his credit. Alex Gordon had a solo homer, double and three runs scored as Kansas City salvaged the finale of this three-game set. Kansas City will be at Seattle tonight.

Graveside services for Reba O. Conaway of Salem, formerly of St. Louis, age 97, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Carr Cemetery in Steelville. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Memorials may be made to the Human Society.
Funeral services for Muriel Ivon Henson of Rolla, age 91, will be held Wednesday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday night. Interment will be in the Roach Cemetery in Doolittle. Memorials are suggested to the Rolla Presbyterian manor.
Funeral services for Thomas J. O'Keefe of Rolla, age 72, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the St. Patrick Church in Rolla. Visitation will be Wednesday frmo 5:00 to 8:00 with a Prayer Service at 5:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the St. Patrick Church, the Metallurgy Department of Missouri S&T and the Order of the Cardinal Mercier Educational Endowment Fund of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity.
