The Salem High School Quiz Bowl team won the District 3 Academic Team Championship by a clean sweep on Saturday, April 9th hosted by the Cuba High School. Lane Howard won the 1st place Individual Medal averaging 112.5 points per game and was named to the All District Team. Only six medals were awarded, however, Tarynn Huitt placed in 7th overall in the tournament, which was just out of the medal ranking. Salem won out over Bourbon 410 to 100 in the first game; then drew a bye for the second game, and then beat Dixon 330 to 140. Salem earned the first seed in the playoff brackets. Salem played fourth seed St. James in the semi-finals, defeating the Tigers, 270 to 170. Salem then went into the finals against the host, Cuba High School, and defeated them 360 to 250. The Salem Quiz Bowl Team will host Sectionals on Thursday, April 14th. A win at Sectional will mean a trip to the State Academic Tournament on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia on May 7th. Salem has won a seat at State several times and won the State Title in 2001. The Salem Varsity Quiz Bowl Team includes Lane Howard, Tarynn Huitt, Liz Snyder, Ashley Greenshields, Kayce Webber and Stetson Hanning. The Salem Junior Varsity Quiz Bowl Team includes Tucker Conley, Daniel Schultz, Jacob Gale, Madison Auten and Dakota O’ Donnell. 

The Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday will run from Tuesday, April 19th through Monday, April 25th. Those who purchase new ENERGY STAR qualified appliances in Missouri during that holiday will save at least 4.225 percent off the purchase. The reduced price represents the elimination of the state’s sales tax from the purchase. During the Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday the City of Salem and Dent County will not be participating, thus those taxes will still need to be paid. ENERGY Star labeled appliances that qualify for the sales tax exemption include: clothes washers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps. The Dent County Fire Protection District has released their reports. On Thursday, April 7th at 2:52 in the afternoon, four firefighters were dispatched to perform an aircraft standby at the station. They provided manpower and were done at 3:22. Later that afternoon at 4:22, five firefighters were dispatched to South Oak Street to assist the EMS crew. They provided the manpower and were back at the station at 4:29. Later that night at 7:00, eleven firefighters performed training at the station. They did search and rescue and confined spaces practice and were done at 10:30. On Friday, April 8th at 11:36 in the morning, five firefighters were dispatched to Highway 32 West to extricate a victim from a vehicle. They performed the extrication and were back at the station at 12:18. On Saturday, April 9th at 10:34 in the morning, six firefighters were dispatched to the Salem High School to perform an aircraft standby. They provided manpower and were back at the station at 11:22. Later that day at 3:09, six firefighters were dispatched to Highway 72 and Route H for a forest, woods, or wild land fire. They extinguished the fire and were back at the station at 4:15.

The University of Missouri Extension’s Salem TCRC will host a hands-on workshop titled Advanced QuickBooks Pro 2010.  This workshop will be held on Thursday, April 21st from 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. This training will be taught by University of Missouri Business Development Specialist, Mick Gilliam. You will learn how to design and customize invoices, reports and other documents; importing into Microsoft Excel; and track transactions and transaction history. You will receive an explanation of all accounting and forms; taxes and tax forms; learn how to reconcile checkbooks and how to use the “find” feature. Students will have hands on instruction in the Salem TCRC Computer Lab. Each participant will have a computer workstation. Class size is limited to 10 students. The Salem TCRC is located in the Salem Freedom Activity Center at 1200 W. Rolla Road in Salem.  There is a cost for this workshop and includes student handouts. Ryan Smith drove in four runs with a double and single, and the Salem Tigers scored six unearned runs en route to beating the Cabool Bulldogs, 9-4. Lane Stluka had two doubles in the game and an RBI, and Aaron Shaw also had two hits and drove in a run. Smith got the win going 5 2/3rds innings before Skyler Johnson pickup up the save getting the last four hitters. Salem is 6-3 on the year and 3-0 in the SCA. They will be at Willow Springs tomorrow.

The Salem Golf Team will participate in the Tiger Classic in St. James today starting at 9:00 this morning.

Chris Young went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and Justin Upton belted a three-run homer, as Arizona beat St. Louis, 13-8. Lance Berkman, David Freese and Colby Rasmus each had a solo blast for the Cardinals, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Chris Carpenter (0-2) was roughed up for eight runs on eight hits in four innings. Albert Pujols finished 3-for-5 for the Cardinals, who also got three hits from Ryan Theriot. The Cards and Diamondbacks will play again tonight at 8:05 on KSMO Radio.

Danny Valencia's single scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th frame, as Minnesota edged Kansas City, 4-3, at Target Field. Wilson Betemit went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Mike Aviles drove in a run for Kansas City, which saw its two-game winning streak come to an end. Robinson Tejeda (0-1) took the loss while starter Jeff Francis yielded three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and one walk over seven frames in the game. The Royals and Twins play this afternoon.

Funeral services for Stanley Berry of Steelville, age 62, will be held today at 11:00 at the Steelville Assembly of God Church in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Steelville Assembly of God Church building fund or the Gibbs Care Center building fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville.

Funeral services for Ava Leora Vichman of Steelville, age 80, will be held Thursday at 10:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held today from 4:00 to 8:00. Internment will be in the Steelville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Gibbs Care Center Building Fund or the Steelville Food Pantry.

Memorial services for William Esco “Butch” Nash Jr. of Rolla, age 62, will be held Friday at 4:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 2:00 until service time. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

There will no services for Grover Junior Judd of Salem, age 80. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson’s Mortuary of Salem.
