An accident happened in Dent County Thursday evening at 8:35 on Highway 19 about 20 miles south of Salem that took the life of a Salem man. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Jeep driven northbound by 31-year old Patrick J. Ranier of Salem, passed a 1987 Dodge driven northbound by 45-year old Ron Breeding of Salem, and collided head on with a 1994 Pontiac driven southbound by 35-year old Sondra Webber of Salem. The Jeep overturned, ejecting Ranier, and the Pontiac ran off the road into a ditch. Ron Breeding swerved the Dodge in an attempt to avoid hitting the Jeep, but contact was made and the Dodge went off the roadway into a ditch. Patrick J. Ranier was flown to St Johns Hospital in Springfield by Air Evac and was pronounced dead at 11:41 Thursday night at the hospital. Sondra Webber was also flown by Air Evac to St. Johns Hospital in Springfield as she suffered serious injuries. Ron Breeding was not injured in the accident, but a passenger in his vehicle, 33-year old Antinette Burke of Salem, suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by a private vehicle. The Jeep was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing of Salem. The Pontiac was also totaled and removed from the scene by Knight Towing of Salem. The 1987 Dodge sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene. Ranier was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident while everyone else involved in the accident was. The highway patrol was assisted by the Dent County Sheriff’s Department, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crash Team, the Dent County Fire Department and Timber Fire Department at the accident scene.

An accident happened Thursday morning at 6:40 on Highway 72 about two miles east of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, 23-year old Bridget Tefft of Bunker, was driving a 2004 Ford Escape eastbound when she traveled of the right side of the roadway and struck a tree. Tefft was taken by Air Evac to St. Johns Hospital in St. Louis with serious injuries. The Ford Escape was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Wisdom’s Auto Sales and Salvage from Ellington.

An accident happened Tuesday morning at 7:40 in Dent County on Route B about seven miles southeast of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1998 Volkswagon Beetle driven by 31-year old Tara Bergen of Bunker, was traveling westbound and was driving too fast for the road conditions when she ran off the left side of the roadway. Bergen then overcorrected and went off the right side of the roadway where the VW Beetle struck a road sign and overturned. Bergen suffered minor injuries and was taken by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. The VW Beetle sustained extensive damage and was left at the scene.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting District 1 Commissioner Bobby Simpson reported that a crew would be grading and doing ditch work in the Adams Subdivision on Dent County Road 417. Simpson also said that crews are still preparing the Cedar Grove Road for chip and seal and the Park Service would start assisting with the project this coming Tuesday. District 2 Commissioner J.J. Tune reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 428 and 429 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 403. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams stopped by the meeting to inform the Commission of an electrical problem in the treasurer’s office; the Commission agreed to have Shae Wood come in and fix the problem. Stacey Gross, a representative from Geo-Comm stopped by the meeting to discuss the counties options with rural addressing. Gross said it would cost the county approximately $135,000 to rural address and map the entire county and to bring in all county phone prefixes to the 911 call center in Salem. Commissioner Tune said that all the county is worried about right now is rural addressing; the issue of E-911 would be looked into at a later date. Gross said the cost just for rural addressing would be approximately $120,000. Commissioner Simpson said the county is looking into possible options for funding rural addressing and then when this process is completed the issue of E-911 would have to be voted on by the citizens. The Commission agreed to meet with more rural addressing companies before bids for the project are opened. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

Brandon Plank went 2-2, drove in a run and scored four times as the Salem Tigers defeated the Mountain View Liberty Eagles, 10-0 in a five-inning contest at the Salem High School Baseball Complex. Ethan Curley pitched all five innings for Salem giving up just three hits and a walk while striking out five. Brad Lewis went 1-1 with an RBI and Matt Whitaker drove in two for Salem who improved to 7-2 on the year and 3-0 in the SCA. The Salem Baseball Tournament is scheduled begin today starting at 4:00, weather permitting, with Licking, Iberia and St. James. Games will continue on Saturday starting at 10:00 in the morning. KSMO Radio will not broadcast the tournament games.

The St. Louis Cardinals, winners of five of their last six games, will be home tonight to face the Milwaukee Brewers. The game tonight is scheduled to begin at 7:00, while the game on Saturday will be at noon, and Sunday at 1:00. All three games can be heard on KSMO Radio.

Jay Gibbons' two-out base hit in the bottom of the 10th inning was the game-winner, as Baltimore topped Kansas City, 2-1, in the opener of a four-game set at Camden Yards. Brian Roberts led off the 10th with a slicing ground-rule double just inside the line in left. Melvin Mora's sacrifice moved him to third, then Nick Markakis and Miguel Tejada were intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Roberts was forced at home on Aubrey Huff's grounder to first, but Gibbons stepped up and went to the opposite field to drop a single into left to drive home the winning run. Jason Standridge (0-1) took the loss, giving up two hits and one run in two- thirds of an inning. Gil Meche pitched six innings of shutout ball in his start, scattering seven hits and no runs while striking out five. Ross Gload and John Buck collected two hits apiece for the Royals, who have dropped five of their last six games. Mark Grudzielanek knocked in KC's only run of the game. The Royals will be in Baltimore tonight.

Funeral services for Gracie D. Wethy Tumlinson of Salem, age 66, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery in Salem. Memorials are suggested to the Dry Fork Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lawrence Terrill of Salem, age 89, are incomplete at this time but are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
