Loggers and forest landowners are invited to attend a workshop this Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center in Salem. Speakers will discuss the advantages of active forest management and how loggers and landowners can promote good harvest practices. There will be a field tour in the afternoon. This workshop is being sponsored by the Eastern Ozarks Forestry Council, the Missouri Department of Conservation, Pioneer Forest, and the Wayne County Soil & Water Conservation District. Pre-registration is required by calling the Conservation Office in West Plains at 417-256-7161. A $15 fee is payable at the workshop. Lunch, beverages, and transportation for the field tour will be provided.

An accident happened in St. Francois County Wednesday morning at 7:55 on Highway 221 about two tenths of a mile south of Henson Road involving a Salem man. According to the highway patrol report, 54-year old Daniel Adams of Salem was driving a 2002 Ford Taurus northbound on Highway 221 when he lost control on the wet pavement. The Taurus went off the right side of the roadway and Adams overcorrected, then the Taurus went off the left side of the roadway and struck two trees. Adams suffered minor injuries and was taken by the St. Francois County ambulance to the Parkland Hospital. The Ford Taurus was totaled in the accident and was towed from the scene. Adams was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident.

To help motorists prepare for another busy work zone season, the Missouri Department of Transportation has just released its 2007 Missouri Highway Work Zones Map. The free map details 160 major construction sites across the state. Although not a complete listing of all MoDOT construction projects, the map features descriptions of major projects that may affect traffic across the state this year. Insets of the Kansas City and St. Louis areas offer motorists a more in-depth view of urban roadwork. The map is useful for over-the-road truck drivers, visitors planning a trip across Missouri highways and Missouri citizens who want to learn more about roadwork on their routes. MoDOT has an extremely busy year planned for road improve-ments, and this map will help motorists find the easiest, quickest travel route. Up-to-the-minute work zone information can be found on MoDOT’s web site at www.modot.org. Free copies of the 2007 Missouri Highway Work Zones Map are available at tourist information centers, rest areas, and at each of the department’s 10 district offices. There will be a public meeting tonight at the Western Cherokee Nation Tribal Capitol Complex located at 310 East Tenth Street beginning at 6:30 pm. The meeting will attempt to answer the community’s questions and hear comments in regard to many subjects. Everyone is welcome to attend.

This year’s April 16^th opening date for spring turkey season, the earliest ever, gives turkey hunters something they have been asking for. Missouri’s spring turkey regulations remain mostly unchanged from last year. The opening date is an exception. During the mating season in April and May, male turkeys advertise their availability to hens with explosive vocal outbursts. Hunters rely on this habit to find them. Spring turkey season suns for three weeks, from April 16^th through May 6^th. Hunters can take one bearded bird the first week of the season. After that, they are allowed to take one bearded bird per day, up to the season limit of two. Hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to 1:00 pm. Full details of turkey hunting regulations are found in the 2007 Spring Turkey Hunting Information book, which is available where hunting permits are sold.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will host the Mountain View-Liberty Eagles today in SCA baseball action starting at 4:30. Salem enters the game with a 6-2 record overall and 2-0 in the SCA. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio or listen online at www.ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Tiger’s Golf Team will be at Ava today starting at 4:00 while the Tennis team will travel to Licking to face the Wildcats at 4:00. The Salem Tiger Track Teams will be at the West Plains Invitational today starting at 2:30.

Chris Duncan drilled a pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning to snap a tie and lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. David Eckstein and Preston Wilson also drove in runs for the Cardinals, who swept the three-game series and have won five of their last six. So Taguchi had three hits for the Cardinals, but was pinch-hit for by Duncan. His blast made a winner of Ryan Franklin (1-0), who pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings of relief. Adam Wainwright went the first 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. St. Louis returns home and opens a three-game series Friday against Milwaukee.

Troy Glaus homered and scored three runs, and Aaron Hill knocked in three runs, as the Toronto Blue Jays downed the Kansas City Royals, 7-4, in the finale of a three-game set at the Rogers Centre. Kansas City starter Jorge De La Rosa (1-1) surrendered five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits and walked one in 5 2/3 frames. David DeJesus homered for the Royals, who at 3-6 are in last place in the American League Central. Kansas City will be at Baltimore tonight to face the Orioles.

Funeral services for Ray Brooks, Bridgeton, age 77, will be held at 10:00 this morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the West Fork/Sutterfield Cemetery in Bunker.

Services for Leonard “Len” James Davidson of Salem, age 89, will be held at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis at a date to be announced. There will be no visitation. Special military honors will be held at the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the John Burch Society or the Nebraska Woods Medical Fund. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.

Funeral services for Gracie D. Wethy Tumlinson of Salem, age 66,will be held Friday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery in Salem. Memorials are suggested to the Dry Fork Cemetery.
