Chris Duncan drilled a pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning to snap a tie and lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park. David Eckstein and Preston Wilson also drove in runs for the Cardinals, who swept the three-game series and have won five of their last six. So Taguchi had three hits for the Cardinals, but was pinch-hit for by Duncan. His blast made a winner of Ryan Franklin (1-0), who pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings of relief. Adam Wainwright went the first 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts. St. Louis returns home and opens a three-game series Friday against Milwaukee.
Troy Glaus homered and scored three runs, and Aaron Hill knocked in three runs, as the Toronto Blue Jays downed the Kansas City Royals, 7-4, in the finale of a three-game set at the Rogers Centre. Kansas City starter Jorge De La Rosa (1-1) surrendered five runs -- four earned -- on nine hits and walked one in 5 2/3 frames. David DeJesus homered for the Royals, who at 3-6 are in last place in the American League Central. Kansas City will be at Baltimore tonight to face the Orioles.

Funeral services for Ray Brooks, Bridgeton, age 77, will be held at 10:00 this morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the West Fork/Sutterfield Cemetery in Bunker.
Services for Leonard “Len” James Davidson of Salem, age 89, will be held at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis at a date to be announced. There will be no visitation. Special military honors will be held at the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the John Burch Society or the Nebraska Woods Medical Fund. All the arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
