The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5615, 6370 and 6420, while materials would be added and grading would be done on county road 6500. He also said that a crew would be doing chip and seal patching on Dent County Road 4120. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Roads 2110 and 3310, while only grading would be done on county road 4260. Larson said brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3310 as well. He did indicate that a man would be screening brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended the TAC meeting at the MRPC Thursday afternoon as well as the External Relations Committee and MRPC Board meeting Thursday night. He also said there would be no commissioners meeting Monday, as he will be attending a CCAM meeting early that morning. He will then attend the Missouri Association of Counties meeting in Jefferson City later that day along with Commissioners Larson and Purcell as well as Dent County Clerk Angie Curley. Curley will also be attending a County Clerk Committee meeting while she is in Jefferson City. At 10:00, Curley opened bids from the local banks for the lease/purchase of two vehicles for the Dent County Sheriff’s Department: a 2014 Ford Taurus with the police interceptor package, and a 2014 Ford Explorer also with the police interceptor package. Bids were received from all four banks and the bid from US Bank was accepted and approved by the commission. The bid was for $56,000 with 2.12% interest rate with no documentation fees and three annual payments. Sandy Ogle from US Bank was in attendance when the bids were opened. At the last meeting, the commission voted on new computer equipment for the Road and Bridge Department. The commission received quotes from Automated Business Systems and Craig Technology and after some discussion, they went with the bid from ABS for $1,178.96. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday, April 17th at 9:00 in the morning at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public.

Ozark National Scenic Riverways received a preliminary report from the architects, historians, and engineers who conducted a thorough and expert inspection of Alley Mill in January. Numerous restoration needs were indicated in the report. Preservation of the iconic Alley Mill is the park’s top priority for project work this year and several of the most important repairs are planned for the next several months. A new telephone line will be installed to serve the mill’s current fire suppression system. The system is designed to automatically notify emergency officials when smoke and heat are sensed. The aging wood shingle roof will be removed and replaced. Deteriorated and rotted structural members will be rehabilitated. Non-historic elements on the outside of the building such as alarm bells and piping will be removed and relocated. The mill’s exterior will be prepped and repaired prior to receiving a fresh coat of red paint. The approach and entry into Alley Mill will be improved for easier accessibility. The preservation experts specifically stressed the need for immediate action addressing water and tree root infiltration into the mill’s foundation. Sub-surface drainage trenched adjacent to the mill will draw water away from the foundation. Water will be diverted from the turbine pit and foundation by strategically placing sheet steel. The steel plate will allow the park employees to safely assess the failing Alley Spring impoundment, turbine pit, and raceway for exploring long-term solutions for stabilization. The root system from a large sycamore next to the Mill has compromised the foundation requiring the tree’s removal. Unfortunately the tree will have to be cut down. Work on the preservation of the Alley Mill will begin around mid-April and could last through August. To ensure visitor and worker safety during the restoration, access to Alley Mill will unfortunately be obstructed for the duration of the project. The grounds surrounding the mill and the east access to the Alley Spring Loop Trail will be open unless heavy equipment is moving in the area. Park Rangers will be stationed on the grounds near the mill to provide historical information about the structure, how it worked, why was it built, and the on-going preservation work going on. The public can walk round most of Alley Spring, enjoy the crystal clear water, and witness preservation in progress that happens perhaps every 20 years to Alley Mill. They ask visitors to obey closure signs and pardon our dust as we make Alley Mill better than it was and available for the enjoyment of future generations.

Ava's Ben Loge pitched a perfect game Thursday against the Salem Tigers in their SCA opener as Ava thrashed the Salem Tigers, 13-0. Loge struck out nine of the 21 batters he faced and had a three-ball count on only three batters. Ava scored a run in the 3rd inning, two more in the 4th, three in the 6th inning and seven more in the 7th inning. The Tigers drop to 1-5 on the year and 0-1 in the SCA. They will be at Houston Monday to face the Tigers in another SCA game starting at 4:30.

Salem Tiger tennis topped Mountain View on Thursday, 9-0, to move to 2-1 on the year. They will be in Rolla on Monday.

Kyle Brodziak scored two goals to help the Minnesota Wild beat the St. Louis Blues with a 4-2. St. Louis saw its losing streak grow to a four straight and were leapfrogged by Colorado for first place in the Central Division. Both teams have 111 points, but the Avalanche have more non-shootout wins. The Blues will be in Dallas tonight to face the Stars at 7:30. KSMO will play back this game back following the Cards game tonight. The Blues will then host the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday morning at 11:30 to close out the season, and you can hear it on KSMO.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but will host the Chicago Cubs tonight in the first of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Joe Kelly will take the mound opposite Jeff Samardzija. You can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 6:40.

The Kansas City Royals also had the day off yesterday and will be in Minnesota tonight in the first of a three game series at Target Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10.

Memorial visitation for Elmer “Leon” Jones of Salem, age 86, will be held Saturday from 11:00 until 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Delbert Day Cancer Institute in Rolla.

Funeral services for Maxine N. Baird of Salem, age 84, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Hobson Community Church in Hobson. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Interment will be in the Carty Cemetery in Hobson. Memorials may be made to the Carty Cemetery Fund.

Funeral services for Lucey Alvey of Steelville, age 90, will be Sunday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from 1:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cherryville First Baptist Church Cemetery.

Graveside services for Donald (Lloyd) Grogan of Moscow Mills Missouri, age 77, will be held Monday at the Green Forest Cemetery in Salem. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
