Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla says that four solar homes built by students will soon be part of an experimental microgrid to demonstrate the feasibility of such small-scale projects. The project involves houses in the university's Solar Village that will use the microgrid to store and manage renewable energy. Professor Mehdi Ferdowski says the microgrid will be less dependent on the utility power grid and can operate during blackouts by using stored solar energy. He says utility companies are interested to see if microgrids can be a viable business model. Students living in the solar houses will monitor results to demonstrate that the technology could have other uses. Organizers say expansion plans at the Solar Village include adding a wind turbine, generators, electric vehicles, and an electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
