The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. At the meeting, Commissioners Bobby Simpson and J.J. Tune both reported that District 1 and 2 crews would be monitoring culverts and low water bridges. Commissioner Tune also said that maintenance would be done on two dump trucks. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles attended a series of MRPC meetings last night in St. James starting at 4:00 with a Transportation Advisory Committee Meeting. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that Tuesday’s election went smoothly, but there was only a 10% voter turnout. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 and the meeting is open to the public.
The Salem Police Department released their reports involving theft and property damage. On March 29th at 11:22 in the morning, an officer was sent to the 400 block of East Roosevelt in reference to a theft. The report revealed that person(s) unknown took a yellow 2005 Yamaha 450 ATV from a yard of a residence. The ATV is valued at $4,300. On March 31st ate 11:48 in the morning, an officer was detailed to the 700 block of East Rolla in reference to a theft from a vehicle. The report revealed that person(s) unknown entered a vehicle and took two toolboxes with tools in them valued at $250. On April 1st at 8:11 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to the Casey’s General Store on Highway 19 in reference to a theft of fuel. The report revealed that person(s) unknown driving a red Mazda, pulled in and pumped $33 in fuel and left without paying. On April 5th at 8:38 in the morning, an officer was sent to the Sonic Drive-In in reference to property damage. The report revealed that person(s) unknown painted graffiti on the building in black spray paint. The damage is valued at $100. Anyone with any information regarding these incidents, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.
The Dent County Fire Protection District released their reports for calls received at the station in the last couple of days. A call came in at 11:18 Sunday, April 6th for a grass fire out Highway 19 North, and the call was cancelled prior to leaving the station. The Dent County Fire Protection District responded to several calls on Tuesday, April 8th. At 8:20 that morning, the District responded to an ambulance assist call on County Road 117, which was disregarded enroute to the station. At 11:40 that morning, a call came in for a structure fire on Highway 72 North. Upon arrival firefighters found smoke coming from a wall heater. The cause of the fire was determined to be a heater by the kitchen had caught fire. A total of four firefighters responded to the call. At 1:51 that afternoon, a call came in for a tree on a power line on County Road 4122. The electric company was called to the scene and arrived at 2:22. A total of four firefighters responded to the call. The next call came in at 6:24 that evening for a grass fire located on County Road 2240. Upon arrival firefighters found about two acres on fire, which was caused from a brush pile that burned out of control. About three acres burned in total. Eight firefighters responded to the call. A call came in at 6:56 that evening for a First Responder in the 700 block of Pershing. Upon arrival firefighters found one patient having trouble breathing. A total of five firefighters responded to the call. On Wednesday, April 9th, firefighters responded to a Hazmat call that came in at 3:56 in the afternoon. Upon arrival firefighters found about five gallons of diesel fuel had spilled in the 1100 block of West Highway 32. A total of five firefighters responded to the call.

rd is the Spring Kids Free Fishing Day at Montauk State Fish Hatchery. Children’s free fishing tags can be picked up at the Hatchery Office the night before the event from 5:00 to 8:00 pm or all day Saturday during the event. All children must pick up their tag before fishing. No daily trout fishing tag fee will be required for children ages 15 and under on that day. A special designated fishing area will be provided for children, however, children can fish anywhere in the park. The Salem Tiger Baseball game yesterday with the Mountain View-Liberty Eagles was postponed due to the rain and will be made up at a later date. The Salem Baseball Tournament is scheduled to begin today with St. James, Licking and Iberia participating at the Salem High School Baseball Field Complex. The tournament continues into Saturday with round robin action all day. KSMO Radio does not carry the tournament. The Tigers are 3-0 on the year
Kevin Correia befuddled Cardinals batters over 7 2/3 scoreless frames, as the San Francisco Giants downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 5-1, at AT&T Park. Adam Wainwright (1-1) ran out of gas in the seventh after six solid frames. The right-hander gave up four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in seven innings. Troy Glaus knocked in the lone run for the Cardinals, who were looking for their best 10-game start to a season in 27 years. The Cardinals face the Giants tonight, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon and you can hear all the games on KSMO Radio.
Alex Rodriguez, Jorge Posada and Melky Cabrera all homered, and Andy Pettitte pitched into the seventh inning as the New York Yankees salvaged the finale of a three-game series by besting Kansas City, 6-1. Jose Guillen drove in the lone run for Kansas City, which lost for the first time in four games. John Bale (0-2) surrendered four runs on eight hits in six innings en route to the loss. The Royals will host Minnesota tonight through Sunday in a Central Division matchup.
The St. Louis Blues have sent goaltender Hannu Toivenen to their minor league affiliate in Peoria to participate in the minor league playoffs.

Funeral services for Mary Ellen Shaffer of Salem, age 86, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery.
Funeral services for Floyd R. Snelson of Vandalia, Ohio, formerly of Rolla, age 88, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Thomas-Fairview Cemetery with full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps Regional Hospice.
Funeral services for Sherrill Edward “Joe” Jones of Bixby, age 64, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Viburnum Chapel. Visitation will be held tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Dotson Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.
Funeral services for Arvil Lee Nelson of Salem, age 78, will be held Sunday afternnoon at 2:00 at Wilson Mortuary. Visitation will be Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the New Hope Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the New Hope Cemetery.
Kenneth William Nance passed away April 7th at Viburnum. Mr. Nance was cremated and there will be no memorial service. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Viburnum.
