An accident occurred at 11:10 Monday evening in Dent County on County Road 622 about nine miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Ford Taurus driven by 18-year old Courtney Elliott of Salem was traveling eastbound when Elliott lost control while avoiding an animal, traveled off the left side of the roadway, struck a fence and overturned. Elliott suffered moderate injuries and was taken by private conveyance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by the owner.

The Salem Park Board held a meeting Tuesday evening at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. At the meeting, the board discussed the condition of the Al Brown Fields and Salem Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash is worried that the fields may not be ready for the Maxwell Benefit Softball Tournament at the end of the month. It is very muddy where the fields were trenched out for the sewer line and the fence has not been put back up. The field still needs to be seeded and strawed but the current wet weather has prohibited any repairs. Nash did report that about 180 children signed up for the first youth baseball and softball signup held last week. Two more signup days will be held on Thursday and Friday and Nash said that he may have to add a couple more. The board is expecting to make the team selections at the end of April so that practices can start the first week of May. Games will then begin the week of graduation except for T-Ballers who would start after school is out. Nash said most of the equipment is still in good shape, but he may have to cycle out some of the older equipment after further inspection. Nash did say that Progressive Ozark bank has offered to sponsor the Youth Baseball Leagues this year and that would free up more money for equipment. Nash also said that the electric has not been run to the new scoreboards at the Salem Freedom Activity Center Fields, but the boards have been mounted. Nash said that the scoreboards are the final phase for then park grant and they will take pictures once they are operating. Park Board President Doug Barnes reminded the board of the parking problem and he will ask the Salem Board of Aldermen if they can put in their budget money to cover the creek in their next fiscal budget. Nash reported that the old pool filter has been removed awaiting the new pump, filter and chlorination system. He said that a shelter house has been built in the pool area except for the roof that was to be installed this week. He says that the pool will be repainted and recaulked by the first week of May and the new filter is to be installed in the next week of so. He also told the park board that the board of alderman did agree to raise the fees this year. Nash also told the board that the area for the new playground equipment is ready awaiting some dry weather to install it. The board was told that the road into the soccer fields off of Route HH has been started and that some trees have been taken down, but it is currently too wet to do much more at this time. After a lengthy discussion, it was approved by the board that this year’s adult softball leagues be required to use a 44-core ball, and they recommend that only ASA approved bats be allowed for game use for the safety of all players. Next year, the park board will require that all bats be ASA approved. Barnes also reported that a $2,000 grant for parks and recreation is available from MFA Oil and the board agreed to pursue the grant. The board postponed the election of officers until the next meeting after the mayor makes his appointments to the Salem Park Board at the next Board of Aldermen meeting. The meeting was then adjourned.
