Skip Schumaker's sacrifice fly in the top of the 12th inning lifted the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2, at PNC Park. Tom Gorzelanny tossed seven brilliant shutout innings for Pittsburgh but watched as Pirates closer Salomon Torres gave up the lead when Scott Spiezio hit a two-run single in the top of the ninth. The Cardinals have won the first two contests of this three-game series. Aaron Miles finished 4-for-5 while Gary Bennett added three hits and scored the game-winning run for St Louis. Randy Keisler started for the Cards and allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts in six innings. With the score tied 2-2 in the top of the 12th, John Wasdin (0-1) allowed a one-out single to Bennett and a double to Miles before pinch-hitter Yadier Molina was intentionally walked to load the bases. Schumaker then lifted a fly ball to shallow left field, and Bay's throw to the plate was perfect and arrived in plenty of time. But catcher Ronny Paulino dropped the ball after he tagged Bennett and the Cards took the lead. The Cards go for the sweep this morning at Pittsburgh, weather permitting, starting at 11:15 on KSMO Radio.
Kansas City doubled up Toronto, 6-3, in the middle contest of their three-game set at Rogers Centre. Greinke (1-1), who missed almost all of last season with a social anxiety disorder, allowed just one run on six hits en route to his first win. David DeJesus finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in for the Royals, who snapped a three-game skid. Tony Pena was 2-for-4 with an RBI triple. The Royals will face Toronto again tonight.
