Several teams of students representing the Salem High School, Salem FFA Chapter and Ag Education Department, recently competed in Career Development Events (CDE's) in Rolla in the South Central District contests. The South Central District contests consist of 45 schools competing in the district. Several teams qualified to go on to the State FFA Competition that will be held April 17th and 18th in Columbia at the University of Missouri campus. The Livestock Judging Team consisting of Julianna Bermudez, Eddie Fleetwood, Darr Malott and Colton Malott, placed 9th and they will go to state by obtaining the last qualifying spot. Last year the Salem FFA Chapter did not have a Poultry Judging Team, but this year the Poultry Judging Team made up of Kendra Case, Tamara Lampkins, Kimberly Land and Patrick Whitbrode placed 5th and will proceed to state competitions. The Ag Sales Team placed 3rd and is made up of Julianna Bermudez, Darr Malott, Angel Rictor and Ryan Tiefenthaler. Ryan Tiefenthaler also participated in the Extemporaneous Speaking contest and placed 4th for an alternate position for state competition. Although there has not been a Parliamentary Procedure Team since the year 2000, this year’s Parliamentary Procedure Team will go to State as they placed 2nd. The team is made up of Clint Capps, Megan Greenshields, Ryan Marlin, Phillip Moser and Patrick Whitbrode. The Chair Person for the team is Zachery Moser and Kendra Case is the alternate on the team. The FFA Knowledge Team made up of Taylor Fry, Ashley Greenshields, Lane Howard and Levi Starkey placed 6th and will also proceed to the state competitions. Selected for the State FFA Choir were Julianna Bermudez, Megan Greenshields and Colton Malott. Salem FFA members scheduled to receive their State FFA degrees are Zachery Moser, Sara Privett and James Wells. The Beginning Ownership Record Book done by Lane Howard and the Beginning Placement Record Book done by Ashley Greenshields will be on display at the State competition and each of them will be receiving a State Leadership Medal. Also the Chapter Scrap Book, which won 1st place in the Area 13 competition, done by Amanda Fuller will also be on display. Congratulations teams!!!
An accident occurred at 5:10 Wednesday night in Dent County at the intersection of Route J and Grand Street in Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Salem Police Ford Crown Victoria driven by 38-year old John J. Chase of Salem, was responding to an emergency call when he crested a hill and observed a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville driven by 24-year old Sara Weber of Salem traveling through the intersection of Route J and Grand Street. The Crown Victoria struck the Pontiac in the intersection. Weber suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Hospital by Salem ambulance. They were both wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The Pontiac sustained moderate damages and was driven from the scene of the accident. The Ford sustained moderate damages and was removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.
The Intercounty Electric 2008 rural electric youth tour finalists were selected from our area. Jordan Hammond from Licking, Hannah Kettner from Salem and Branden Taber from St. James were selected for the tour to Washington D.C., while Allie Honeyfield and Ashton Lewis from Licking, and Robert Wilson and Matthew Prince from Salem where selected to tour Jefferson City.
Registration for Dent County Baby, Little Mr. And Miss Dent County and Dent County Princess will be held on Monday, April 14th in the Commons Youth Building at 6:00 pm. Dent County baby contestants, Little Mr. And Miss Dent County contestants will need to bring two (2) decorated cans or jars to the meeting. These cans will be placed in the Town & Country Bank and Bank of Salem locations the week before the Spring Festival. Votes are tabulated for each penny collected. The pageants will be held in conjunction with the Spring Festival on Saturday, May 3rd beginning at 6:00 pm at the Commons Fairground Stage. Taylor Sirois from the Salem High School Basketball Team has been nominated for the prestigious Mr. Show-Me Basketball Award. He is one of eight finalists for the award that will be announced at the MBCA Academic All-State banquet to be held this Sunday.
The Salem Baseball Tigers are scheduled to be at Mountain View today to face the Liberty Egales at 4:30, weather permitting. If played, you can hear the game on KSMO radio andonline at www.ksmoradio.com.
Albert Pujols slammed his first two home runs of the season to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a hard-fought 6-4 victory in the rubber match of a three-game series with the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park. Pujols finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in, as his leadoff homers in the seventh and ninth innings gave the Cardinals their seventh win in their last eight games. Skip Schumaker also hit three hits, and Rick Ankiel recorded two RBI for St. Louis. Starter Braden Looper (2-0) earned the win after allowing three runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. Jason Isringhausen pitched the ninth for his fifth save of the season. The Cards will be in San Francisco tonight to face the Giants starting at 8:55 on KSMO Radio.
Zack Greinke threw eight solid innings, giving to lead the Kansas City Royals past the New York Yankees, 4-0, on a rainy night at Kauffman Stadium. Greinke (2-0) up six hits, walked two and had a pair of strikeouts, while lowering his ERA to 0.60. John Buck went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in for the Royals, who have won three in a row. Tony Pena Jr., Ross Gload and Jose Guillen each recorded an RBI in the win, while Jimmy Gobble earned his first save of 2008 by retiring the last two batters. The Royals and Yankees play again tonight.

Graveside services for Thomas Cochran of Spring, Texas, formerly of St. Louis, age 72, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the St. James Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James.
Funeral services for Mary Ellen Shaffer of Salem, age 86, will be held Friday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Edgar Springs Cemetery.
Funeral services for Floyd R. Snelson of Vandalia, Ohio, formerly of Rolla, age 88, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Thomas-Fairview Cemetery with full Military Honors. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps Regional Hospice.
Graveside services for Norma Jean Strong of Salem, formerly of Tampa Bay, Florida, age 47, will be at a later date at Thornfield, MO. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
Kenneth William Nance passed away April 7th at Viburnum. Mr. Nance was cremated and there will be no memorial service. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Viburnum.
