The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse for their regular meeting. At the meeting, Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in the sales tax information for the month of April. She stated that the county received $59,619.95 this April and that is down $10,412.76 from the $70,032.71 received in April of 2012. For the year-to-date sales tax receipts from the state in 2013, Dent County is down $14,577.32 over the same time period in 2012. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell indicated that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5610, 6400, 6410, 6610 and 6665; and materials were going to be added to county road 6580. He reported that materials were going to be stockpiled at the shop and that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 6240. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that materials were going to be added and grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 2330, 5260 and 5320. He reported that two men were going to check the north and northwestern parts of the county for any damages from the storm Sunday night. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles was included in a conference call Monday dealing with the South Central Community Action Agency Leadership Board regarding how Sequestration will affect the Head Start program. Today, Skiles will be attending the South Central Community Action Agency board meeting at 5:00 in Winona, and he will be attending the Meramec Regional Emergency Committee Meeting on Wednesday at 12:00 noon. Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings came in and discussed with the commission a problem with the transfer switch from the 9-1-1 generator for backup power in case of a power outage. He said he was given a cost estimate of $450 to replace the switch from A Plus Electric Service in Salem and there would be no labor charge to change it out. Stallings was going to check with A Plus Electric Service and find out more about the problem before submitting a request to the commission. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Phelps County Public Housing Agency (PHA) has closed its housing waiting list, announced housing manager Linda Hollandsworth. Until further notice, no new applications will be accepted at the St. James office or Potosi satellite office. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has decreased the allocation of housing assistance payments (HAP) funds, which are used to subsidize rent and utility costs for very-low income families in the six-county PHA area. According to Hollandsworth, the PHA can spend no more than they are receiving, therefore, they can only serve 662 families per month and right now they are serving 730 families per month. The Sequestration of federal funds began March 1, and the Phelps County PHA is receiving only 94 percent of its 2012 allocation. Hollandsworth indicated that due to budget cuts and increased housing costs, the Phelps County PHA has been using reserve funds to cover part of its monthly housing obligations, further limiting the number of families the PHA can serve. She said that the PHA would now have to work with the annual allocation, which means no new families can be added to the program. The Phelps County PHA currently has over 300 families on the waiting list and needs to reduce the number of units subsidized because of sequestration. Closing the waiting list will give the PHA the opportunity to serve its current participants with the limited funds available. PHA staffing has also been reduced as the PHA is only receiving 69 percent of the allowable administration contract. The Phelps County PHA, located inside the office of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission at 4 Industrial Drive in St. James, offers rental assistance to very low-income families in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Washington counties, and Phelps County, outside the city of Rolla. For anyone seeking more information about the Phelps County Public Housing Agency, you may call (573) 265-4200.
