An accident happened at 4:40 Thursday afternoon in Reynolds County on Tom’s Creek Road in Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, a Yamaha ATV driven southbound by 22-year old Ricky J. Harper of Bunker began skidding and went off the right side of the road. It struck a fence and Harper was completely ejected from the ATV. Harper suffered serious injuries and was flown to St. Johns Hospital in St. Louis by Air Evac. There was minor damage to the ATV and it was removed by the owner. Harper was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident.

The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Jerry Craig representing the Sesquicentennial group told the commission that the gazebo that he described to the commission for the courthouse lawn would have to be left at the courthouse for a considerable time such as three to four months. The concern of the commission at a previous meeting was that it would kill the grass, but Craig said that he wanted to put it where the tree is dead on the  south side of the courthouse square and the grass is already thin at that spot. There was also concern about it blowing over or catching on fire, but the gazebo is made of a composite material and it more than likely can be anchored to the ground. Craig asked that the commission give him a final answer by the 15th before the next Sesquicentennial meeting. Deloris Gray Wood came in to discuss shirts for the 140-year birthday celebration of the Dent County Courthouse. She said that the commissioners and those working at the courthouse should have white shirts as well as the road and bridge department, but wanted to know if there should be other colors available to the public. The commission had no problem with the shirts being offered in another color if someone wanted them. The celebration will be on the courthouse lawn from 2:00 to 4:00 on Sunday, April 25th. For more information about shirts or the event, call Wood at 729-2545. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done and rock would be added to Dent County Roads 5080, 6220, 6280, 6287 and 5020. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 4405, 4410 and 4480, while rock would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2510 and 4010. Larson stated that new culvert pipes would be installed on Dent County Roads 4010 and 4480. Larson reported that he attended a MoDOT training on inspection requirements and guidelines that must be followed for projects using BRO funds. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he and Commissioner Purcell attended the South Central County Commissioners meeting and heard Joel Yelverton who is the regional coordinator for the National Forest for School Coalition. He said that much of the money that is allocated to some school districts who have extensive federal lands would be eliminated if congress does not renew the current legislation. For example, for the year 2009, Salem R-80 received $53,263.99 from the National Forest land funds, Oak Hill R-1 received $43,987.44 and the Bunker School District received $84,272.95. Skiles said that CCAM President Terry Nichols spoke on legislative issues and on the budget law that county governments want passed where they can reduce their budgets. Currently, reducing the county budget due to a lack of sales tax revenues is not allowed by state law. Skiles said that he attended the TAC and MRPC meeting Thursday night. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the municipal election went smooth with very little problems. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
