The Salem R-80 Board of Education held a re-organizational meeting Thursday evening at the district administrative offices. At the meeting, Superintendent Steve Bryant presented the election results and the board certified them before Wade Jadwin, Jimmy Williams and Greg Nash were sworn in. Bryant then took over to elect a new board president and Steve Watson was re-elected. With Watson presiding over the election of officers, Greg Stephens was elected Vice-President, A.J. Seay was elected Secretary and Wade Jadwin was elected as Treasurer. The board then heard resignations from junior high math instructor Revay Crocker, junior high communication arts instructor Ray Pelatier, and Bryan McNamee resigned his junior high football coaching position. The board then went into closed session to discuss personnel and discipline. In closed session, the board voted to employ Drew Overmyer as a senior high social studies instructor; Heather Johnson as a senior high agriculture education instructor; Susan Jadwin as a senior high counselor; Chad Smith as the ISS supervisor and Tina McKee as an upper elementary 6^th grade teacher. The meeting was then adjourned.

An accident happened Friday around 11:20 in the morning in Dent County on Highway 32 about 12 miles east of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2006 Dodge driven by 21-year old Michael Dunn of Licking, was struck by a 2000 Nissan driven by 41-year old Lisa Chappell of Bunker, who made the left turn into the path of Dunn. Suffering minor injuries was Dunn who was taken to the Salem Memorial Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. Suffering moderate injuries was the occupant of Dunn’s vehicle, 15-year old Latisha Brown of Licking who was taken to the Salem Memorial Hospital by the Salem Ambulance. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed by Whitakers Towing of Salem. Chappell was cited for failure to yield in the accident.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of March. During the month, they wrote 22 traffic tickets, 22 warning tickets and six equipment repair order. They served 39 summons to appear in court and two fugitive warrants. The Salem Police Department investigated 18 accidents, two assaults, three domestic assaults, and one report of driving while intoxicated. The Police Department also investigated 10 reports of stealing, eight reports of property damage, one report of tampering, one burglary, five reports of disorderly conduct, one report for open containers, one report of refusal to obey lawful order, one report of child abuse, one report of a peace disturbance, one report of a lost/stolen plate and one report of leaving the scene of an accident. They also investigated two reports of possession of marijuana and one report of possession of drug paraphernalia. The police received 1,684 calls for service during the month and handled 100 walk-ins to the station. The Salem Police Department redirected 57 calls to the animal control officer. They also spent 15 hours in court testifying, six hours as court bailiff and spent 16 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in March included 25 calls for escorts, eight 9-1-1 calls, 5 intoxicated driver investigations, one call for a suspicious person or vehicle, one call for peace disturbances, eight ambulance assist calls, one call for alarms sounding, three calls for fights in progress, three domestic dispute calls, two calls for intoxicated pedestrians, five fire calls and three wreckers were needed. The Salem Police Department drove a total of 10,397 miles during the month of March and arrested 24 males and 3 females during the month.

There will be a free hunter safety course at the Northwood R-4 School Gym this Saturday from 8:00-5:00 for those ages 11 and up. Adults may attend and the concession will be open for lunch. For more information, call 729-4607.

The Salem Baseball Tigers travel to Thayer to face the Bobcats in SCA play this afternoon starting at 4:30. Salem enters the game with a 5-2 record and 2-0 in the SCA. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Tiger Tennis Team will travel to Rolla to face the Bulldogs at 4:00 today.

Kip Wells hurled seven innings of one-hit ball, striking out seven, as St. Louis crushed Houston, 10-1, in the final installment of a three-game weekend set at Minute Maid Park. Wells (1-1) walked only one and retired the final 16 batters he faced. Ryan Franklin pitched a scoreless eighth and Josh Hancock gave up one run and one hit in the ninth, walking a pair. Albert Pujols snapped a 1-for-17 slump by going 2-for-5 with his first home run of the year and three runs scored for the Cardinals, who pounded out 13 hits. Scott Rolen was 2-for-5 with four RBI, Yadier Molina was 3-for-5 and knocked in three, and Preston Wilson picked up a pair of hits in the win. The Cardinals will travel to Pittsburgh today for an afternoon tilt starting at 12:15 on KSMO Radio.

Ivan Rodriguez hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning as the Detroit Tigers came back to defeat the Kansas City Royals, 3-2, at Kauffman Stadium. Rodriguez finished 2-for-4, as the Tigers took two of three games in the weekend set. David Riske (0-1) took the loss. Royals’ starter Brandon Duckworth had an equally strong performance, allowing only four hits, fanning out two and walking one over 6 1/3 innings. Mark Teahen went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and two RBI for the Royals. The Royals will travel to Toronto tonight to face the Blues Jays.

Niklas Backstrom made 24 saves as Minnesota slammed St. Louis, 5-1, at the Xcel Energy Center. Wyatt Smith scored two goals to lead the Wild who will head into the playoffs to face the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Peter Sejna scored the lone goal for the Blues (34-35-13), who finish the season with 81 points. St. Louis netminder Jason Bacashihua gave up two goals on eight shots in the first period before being replaced by Curtis Sanford, who ended with 20 saves. The Blues finished with a .500 record on the road and one game below .500 at the Scottrade Center.

Funeral services for Linda Nunley of Bunker, age 54, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 today. Interment will be in the Bunker City Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lorna Peters of St. James, age 90, will be held Tuesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Chapel in St. James. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ray Brooks, formerly of St. Louis, age 77, will be held at 10:00 Thursday morning at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday evening. Interment will be in the West Fork/Sutterfield Cemetery in Bunker.

Funeral services for Leonard “Len” James Davidson of Salem, age 79, will be held at the Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis at a date to be announced. There will be no visitation. Special military honors will be held at the cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the John Burch Society or the Nebraska Woods Medical Fund.
