The Dent County Commission met for their regular Monday morning meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported it was too wet to grade Monday, so a two-man crew would be doing the 1,000 hour service to grader #23 and installing cab mounts on Dent County Truck #115. Purcell said that a man would be going to Springfield for a load of oil for the Dura-Patcher and another two-man crew would be cleaning culverts, repairing or replacing county road signs as well as picking up tires and trash. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said materials would be added to Dent County Road 2110 which is Missouri Department of Conservation road. He also indicated that work would be done on county truck #58 that broke down last week and one man will screen rock if possible. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles again wanted to remind the citizens of Dent County to check those CenturyLink phone bills and make sure the sales tax and 9-1-1 taxes are going to Dent County. If the bill has anything else, call CenturyLink at 1-866-519-7885. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said the clerk, county assessor and collector balanced on the monthly collections, abatements and add-ons for the month of March. The commissioners reviewed and approved the reports. Curley also stated the accounting firm: Nichols, Stop and Van Hoy, LLC, has requested financial information from the county for the State of Missouri audit of Dent County. Sherry James from the Russell House asked the commission if she could put up a banner on the gazebo and flags on the lawn for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The commissioners unanimously approved her request. At the last meeting, Sheriff Rick Stallings discussed getting four more alarm buttons, another radio and cable for the courthouse security system. The commission also approved that request. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen met Monday night for their regular meeting at the City Hall Council Chambers. At the meeting, the Board heard bids on a Kabota tractor for the cemetery and a Kabota lawnmower for the parks and recreation department. After hearing the bids, the board wanted a larger variety of bids on different types of tractors and lawnmowers. They will review the new bids at the next meeting. The board then heard the bids on 10 recycling bins and ten flat lids from Dempsters, LLC of Beatrice, Nebraska for $3,297.50. The bid was approved by the board and will be paid for by a grant from MRPC. The board also approved the purchase of materials to build a building for the water department from Roberts-Judson Lumber Company for $9,276.85. The board approved the bid from Bishop Construction for a seal coat of the Salem Airport Maintenance Project pavement project with all but 5% paid for by a grant from MoDOT. The final bid awarding went to Logan Excavating from Vienna for the waterline replacement on the McArthur and Route J project. The bid came in at $237,027.50. The cost of the project is being paid for by the Delta Regional Authority and from MoDOT funds. City Administrator Ray Walden thanked all those who attended the Business Expo Saturday at the Upper Elementary School. He also said a reception for outgoing Mayor Gary Brown would be held on Friday, April 18^th from 2:00 to 4:00 at the City Administration Building. Mayor Gary Brown recommended to the board to hire Ray Walden as the full-time city administrator as he has done an outstanding job since taking over for Clayton Lucas. Brown said that many of the resumes received for the position were the same ones submitted at the last search that were rejected, and Brown felt Walden is the best choice. The board approved releasing $21,749.69 of insurance proceeds held by the city for the cleanup of the property at 803 West Rolla Road. The board also approved the bill from Solomon Corporation for $18,191 for the repair or replacement of transformers for the electric department. The 4^th of July Fireworks Display will be held again this year as the board approved the early purchase of fireworks that provides the city with additional fireworks for no additional costs. However, the city has no definitive location, as there is no contract at this time with The Commons. Building Inspectors Jarred Brown and Lloyd Sanderson talked with the board about ordinances governing building codes for the city of Salem. These codes would be derived from the International Buildings Codes updated in 2012. There would be amendments that would be pertinent to this area that would be applicable for the City of Salem. City Attorney William Camm Seay recommended the board read the IBC codes. It is online and City Administrator Walden stated he would try to find hard copies for the aldermen if they are available. Brown said the codes would affect the construction of new homes or renovations of older homes. After the board approved some budget adjustments, the board went into closed session.
