The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their regularly scheduled monthly meeting Tuesday night. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from the previous meeting, bills were discussed and approved. Treasurer Dave Wells noted that the insurance money from the American Auto Fire has been received and replacement items have been ordered. There were a total of 32 fire calls during the month of March. During the calendar review, Chief Nash noted to the board the he will be out of the District April 27th and 28th to attend a review of Inter Op. In old business, the usage of the District facilities was tabled until all members were present and guidelines could be written up. In new business, Chief Nash reported that the State Highway Patrol would like to use the District south parking lot as a secondary motorcycle testing facility. After discussion a motion was made to allow the State Highway Patrol to use the district parking lot on an as needed basis with the exception of activities such as Air Evac landings and fires where testing will stop and testing items will be removed. Paint bids to paint the district building were opened. Two bids were returned and a motion was made to accept the Bid from Johnson Painting for $1,870 and to use money from capitol improvement with the stipulation that proof of insurance could be provided by the contacting the company. Bids were opened for installation of the Ventilation system for the kitchen. A total of 4 bids were requested with only 2 companies responding, and a motion was made to award Brown Heating and Cooling the bid for $1,975 with half down and the balance due on completion. Chief Nash reported that the Officer replacement was in progress but had nothing to report at this time. Nash also reported that about three-fourths of the Inventory was completed and still in the works. Board member Liz Gruendel reported on her findings on finances. After talking with banking institutions, finance people, and others, she stated that she thought the District should adopt a finance committee. After a discussion a motion was made and seconded that the Committee consist of two board members, one banker, one financial planner, the Fire Chief, and the Treasurer. The Committee will meet at least every third month or more often at the discretion of the Committee Chairperson. The Chairperson will report the activities of the Committee to the Board. In order to expedite the initiative, the Committee initially was constituted as Craig Smith as Chairperson; a Board member to be named by the Board President; a banker from Progressive Ozark Bank to be named by Kara Huitt; Joe Brand as Financial Planner; Ray Walden with an MA in Finance from Washington University; Chief Nash, Ex-officio and Dave Wells, Treasurer, Ex-officio. The Board then set May 4th at the fire station at 6:00 pm as the next scheduled meeting date.

The Salem Police Department in conjunction with the Dent County Sheriff Department is announcing, sometime between April 9th and April 30th a DWI sobriety checkpoint will be conducted with in the city limits of Salem.

An accident occurred on Friday, April 2nd at 8:03 in the evening at the intersection of Highway 19. According to the Salem Police report, a 1999 Nissan Pathfinder driven by David Wells of Salem was traveling southbound and struck a pedestrian, whom was walking south on the west side of the street, from behind. The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and was taken by Salem ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. The Nissan Pathfinder sustained minor damage.

The first session of the series “Tyme for Herbs” will be held tonight at 7:00 at the Ozark Natural  and Cultural Resource Center. The session will feature Jerry Wilson as he teaches techniques for growing and harvesting domestic and wild herbs. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will be at Cabool today to face the Bulldogs starting at 4:30. Salem is 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the SCA. Toy can hear the game on KSMO and ksmoradio.com starting at 4:15 with Tiger Talk and Coach Don Smith.

The Salem Golf Team will host the Salem Invitational today, and the Salem Track teams will be at Sullivan today starting at 4:15.

Matt Holliday went 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, as the St. Louis Cardinals plated four runs in the seventh inning to down the Cincinnati Reds, 6-3, at Great American Ball Park. David Freese added a pair of hits and two RBI, while Albert Pujols knocked in a run for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright (1-0) gave up two runs on three hits, struck out six and walked two in seven innings of work. Ryan Franklin picked up the save with a scoreless ninth. The Cards and Reds play this morning at 11:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO.

Willie Bloomquist scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning on a diuble by Rick Ankiel and an error, and Kansas City rallied past the Detroit Tigers, 3-2, at Kauffman Stadium. Alberto Callaspo homered for the Royals. Kansas City starter Luke Hochevar gave up five hits in 7 2/3 scoreless innings. Kyle Farnsworth (1-0) picked up the win despite allowing the run in the top of the 11th. The Royals and Tigers play again this afternoon in KC.

Kris Versteeg had a goal and three assists as Chicago raced out to a five-goal lead and held on late to edge St. Louis, 6-5, at United Center. T.J. Oshie had a goal and an assist while Brad Boyes, David Perron, Roman Polak and Erik Johnson each lit the lamp for the Blues. Chris Mason gave up three goals on four shots in less than eight minutes before being pulled for Ty Conklin, who finished the game with 19 saves. The Blues were eliminated from the playoffs with the loss and the win by Colorado. The Blues will face Anaheim Friday night in St. Louis. 

Before the game, Blues forward Keith Tkachuk announced that he plans to retire at the conclusion of the season. The 38-year-old, who was the 19th overall pick of the 1990 draft by Winnipeg, has played 19 NHL seasons and 1,200 regular season games. A native of the Boston suburbs, Tkachuk has racked up 538 goals and 525 assists and an additional 56 points in 89 playoff games. He has also been a part of four U.S. Olympic teams and collected a silver medal in 2002.

Missouri State University officials announced Wednesday the football and basketball programs will lose scholarships since the programs failed to meet the NCAA’s requirements for academic progress. For the 2011-2012 season, men’s basketball loses one of its 13 scholarships. For 2010-2011, football loses 2.83 scholarships. Officials said MSU has implemented changes for program improvements. Those include better monitoring of classroom performance, more academic support and increased accountability.

Graveside services for Chet Max Gilbert of Salem, age 81, will be held Friday morning at 10:30 at the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery in St. Louis, with Military Honors at the Cemetery. A Memorial service will be held in Salem at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Brian N. Bailey of St. James, age 32, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the Calvary Apostolic Church in St. James. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. Interment will be it the Adams Cemetery in rural Phelps County. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Katheryn Ann “Kay” Page of Salem, age 75, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the Salem Full Gospel Church. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Funeral services for Georgia Lee Warner of Rolla, age 82, will be at a later date at the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall in Rolla. Interment will be private. All arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla.
