A General Municipal Election will be held in Salem on Tuesday, April 8th for the election of a Mayor and one West Ward Alderman. Elections will also be held for the Oak Hill R-1, Dent-Phelps R-3, Northwood R-4 and Salem R-80 school district. Those running for the two-year term, Mayoral position in Salem are Bonnie McGuirt, J.J. Tune and Philip Giacomelli. In the West Ward Aldermanic race for the two-year term, Molly Coffman Zettel is opposing incumbent Kenneth Nash. In the East Ward Aldermanic position incumbent Ryan Whitaker is unopposed. There are three 3-year terms open on the Oak Hill R-1 school board and those running for those seats include: Duane Blackwell, Curt Miller, Phillip Thompson, James Terrill, Nikki Bowen-Eaton and Brad Smith. For the Dent-Phelps R-3 school board, there is three 3-year terms open and those running for the board seats are: Levi J. LuCerne, Ron Copeland, Joe Case, William W. Woolman, Paul Shaffer, Colleen M. Lebel and William Manthey. There are three 3-year terms open on the North Wood R-4 school board. Vying for those board seats is: Mark McSwain, Jenna Dunn, Aaron Brooks and James Kotschedoff. The Salem R-80 school board has three 3-year terms available and a total of five candidates will be on the ballot and they include: Susan Jordan, Holly Erway, Drew Whitaker, Larry Maxwell and incumbent Steven D. Morton. Polls will be open for the General Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 8th from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. Absentee voting will be held today until 5:00 at the Dent County Clerk’s Office in the courthouse.

The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. After approval of the agenda, the city requested bids for the purchase of a new Kubota mid-mount mower for the cemetery and bids for the purchase of a new Kubota zero turn mower with 31 horse power diesel liquid cooled engine with 72 inch mowing deck for the park. The city requested bids for the purchase of ten bins and ten optional flat lids for recycling, and the city requested quotes on construction material for a building for the Water Department and those will also be presented to the Board. The city requested proposals for the Salem Memorial Airport pavement maintenance project and proposals for the waterline replacement on McArthur/Highway J project. City Administrator Ray Walden will bring the Board up to date on items concerning the city and Mayor Gary Brown will updated the Board on numerous items concerning the city and there will be a discussion concerning hiring a city administrator. In new and miscellaneous business, Jerry Maximoff owns a house on West Rolla Road that burnt and according to the city codes, the city retained 25% from the insurance company until the property is cleaned up to the city’s satisfaction. The property has been cleaned up and the building inspector says the city can release the money. Soloman picked up the city’s transformers that needed repair and rebuilt them. They are now ready to be delivered back and the cost will be about $20,000. Superintendent Johns will explain to the Board what the process now is for repairing transformers and he is seeking approval to pay this bill. Building Inspector Lloyd Sanderson and Jarred Brown wish to present to the Board ordinances governing building codes and also present a proposed fee structure for permits. Mayor Brown will then request if the Board plans to hold the annual 4th of July fireworks display and if so, the city can receive a discount on the fireworks if they are purchased now. Several budget adjustments will then be presented for the Board’s approval. The Board will then vote to go into closed session for the purpose of discussing contracts and personnel. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public. 

An accident occurred at 4:20 Saturday afternoon in Reynolds County on Highway J about five miles west of Black. According to the highway patrol report, 60-year old Donald Cash of Boss was driving a 2004 Chevrolet east when he ran off the right side of the roadway, traveled down an embankment, and overturned. Cash suffered serious injuries and was by ambulance to the Iron County Medical Center in Pilot Knob. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Abney’s Towing of Viburnum.

The Salem Tiger baseball team will be in Mountain Grove today to play the Panthers at 4:30. Salem is 0-4 on the year and the game can be heard online at ksmoradio.com. HAS BEEN CANCELLED!!

A big second period and 31 saves from Semyon Varlamov helped the Colorado Avalanche blank the St. Louis Blues, 4-0, on Saturday. Ryan Miller allowed four goals on 29 shots for St. Louis. On Sunday, Patrick Sharp scored the go-ahead goal in the final minute of the second period to lift the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Sobotka scored for the Blues, who are still two points behind Boston for the most points in the NHL. St. Louis will close out the season with four games in six days, starting on Tuesday against the Washington Capitals.

Tony Sanchez's RBI double in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set at PNC Park. Jon Jay stroked an RBI triple for the Cardinals, who fell to 3-3 on the season. Adam Wainwright (1-1) allowed both runs on five hits while striking out seven over seven innings to absorb the loss. The Cardinals will host the Cincinnati Reds today in their home opener and the first of a three-game series. You can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 2:00. Michael Wacha will be on the mound for the Cardinals, opposing Reds’ pitcher Tony Cingrani.

Chris Sale tossed eight scoreless innings as the Chicago White Sox downed the Kansas City Royals, 5-1, to avoid a three-game sweep at Kauffman Stadium. James Shields (0-1) was the hard-luck loser, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six over seven innings. Alex Gordon had an RBI single and Lorenzo Cain went 2-for-3 in the setback for the Kansas City. The Royals will start a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Bob Lanham of Bunker, age 77, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker. Interment will be in the Delmar Cemetery in Bunker.

Funeral services for Delois Johns of Salem, age 83, will be held today at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Black Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials may be made to the Salem High School Project Graduation.

Graveside services for Threcel M. Curry of St. James, age 92, will be held at 1:00 at the Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in St. Ann. All arrangements are under the direction of James & Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Funeral services for Kenneth E. Meyers of Pacific, formerly of Salem, age 87, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be held from 11:00 until service time on Wednesday. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
