A big second period and 31 saves from Semyon Varlamov helped the Colorado Avalanche blank the St. Louis Blues, 4-0, on Saturday. Ryan Miller allowed four goals on 29 shots for St. Louis. On Sunday, Patrick Sharp scored the go-ahead goal in the final minute of the second period to lift the Chicago Blackhawks to a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues. Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Sobotka scored for the Blues, who are still two points behind Boston for the most points in the NHL. St. Louis will close out the season with four games in six days, starting on Tuesday against the Washington Capitals.
Tony Sanchez's RBI double in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the St. Louis Cardinals, 2-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set at PNC Park. Jon Jay stroked an RBI triple for the Cardinals, who fell to 3-3 on the season. Adam Wainwright (1-1) allowed both runs on five hits while striking out seven over seven innings to absorb the loss. The Cardinals will host the Cincinnati Reds today in their home opener and the first of a three-game series. You can hear the game on KSMO starting with the pre-game show at 2:00. Michael Wacha will be on the mound for the Cardinals, opposing Reds’ pitcher Tony Cingrani.
Chris Sale tossed eight scoreless innings as the Chicago White Sox downed the Kansas City Royals, 5-1, to avoid a three-game sweep at Kauffman Stadium. James Shields (0-1) was the hard-luck loser, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out six over seven innings. Alex Gordon had an RBI single and Lorenzo Cain went 2-for-3 in the setback for the Kansas City. The Royals will start a three-game series with the Tampa Bay Rays tonight at 7:10.

Funeral services for Delois Johns of Salem, age 83, will be held today at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Black Cemetery in Lenox. Memorials may be made to the Salem High School Project Graduation.
