The City of Salem Board of Alderman will conduct their meeting tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7:00 pm. During the Hearing of Persons, Jim Heavin wishes to discuss with the Board the problem they had during the heavy rain. Mr. Heavin states that South Jackson Street curbing is not able to contain the run-off from the rains and overflows into the yards. He would like the city to take care of this problem. James Ellis from the Western Cherokee Nation wants to discuss the utility bill that the Western Cherokee Nation received the last two months at their complex, and Dallas Hollenbeck would like to talk to the Board about the electric rate increase. Alderman Bill Riley, Jim Jackson, and Jim McDaniels would like to discuss miscellaneous items involving the City. McDaniels would also like to discuss a rate study, the condition of the Al Brown field, recycling, the budget, the upcoming work on North Hickory, the work on West Fourth and Park, the culverts at the City Park and the electric rates. Mayor Gary Brown will then give his comments on various issued involving the City of Salem. New business will address the Spring Clean-up. Waste Management Corporation is requesting approval from the Board to set the Spring Clean-up weeks for the weeks April 28^th and May 5^th. After the approval of the bills presented by Mary Happel, the Board will then go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman tonight is open to the public.

Last Tuesday, April 2^nd, in Crawford County, 44-year old Timmy Chandler of Viburnum, was sentenced to seven years in the Department of Corrections for shaking a baby violently that she was left with permanent disabilities. The incident occurred in January 2006. Circuit Court Judge William Camm Seay sentenced Chandler on one count of abuse of a child. The case was moved from Dent County on a change of venue according to Dent County Prosecutor Jessica Sparks. The sentencing came after Chandler pleaded guilty to abuse of a child on February 13 followed by the completion of a sentencing assessment report by the state. A second charge against Chandler, domestic assault-second degree, was dropped at the time of his guilty plea.

Election day is tomorrow for a number of candidates for school boards, the Dent County Fire Protection District Board and city offices. In the city of Salem, incumbent Gary Brown will face Rodney Peterson, and incumbent Alderman Mike Whitely will be tested by Kenneth Nash. Alderman Jim McDaniels is unopposed. In the Salem R-80 School Board race, voters will vote for three amongst Greg Stephens, Jack Blackwell, Jimmy Williams and Joseph R. Howard. At Northwod R-4, voters will vote for three from the pool of John Harrison, Tracie Inman, Laura Parsons, Dennis Jessen, Helania Wulff and Johnny Martin. For the Dent-Phelps three-year positions, people will vote for two of these candidates: Tody Toman, III, Todd Hodge, Mike Elliot and Joe Case. One two-year position will be decided between Darrell Skiles and Red Cummings. At Oak Hill R-1 voters will for two candidates from the pool of Joel Devall, Randy Parker and John Strebe. For the Dent County Fire Protection District, Grant Hamlet will face Craig Smith for a five-year position, Liz Gruendel is unopposed for the four-year term, and Stanley McElfresh and Matthew Pappert will vie for the six-year term. Voting hours will be from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

The Salem Baseball Tigers game with Willow Springs was postponed Friday due to wet grounds and has been rescheduled for April 15^th. Today, the Salem Baseball Tigers will host the Thayer Bobcats in SCA play and you can hear the game at 4:30 on KSMO Radio or online at www.ksmoradio.com. Salem is 2-0 on the year.

The Salem Tennis Team will be at Rolla today starting at 4:00.

Hannu Toivonen turned aside 35 shots, and the St. Louis Blues swept a home-and-home series from the Columbus Blue Jackets with a 4-1 win in the last game of the season for both clubs. Keith Tkachuk picked up his 500th career goal with a late empty-netter, and added an assist for the Blues. David Perron also had a goal and an assist for the Blues, who finished the season in last place in the Central Division and 14th out of 15 clubs in the Western Conference, with 79 points and a 33-36-13 record. St. Louis missed the playoffs for the third straight season.

Kyle Lohse was masterful on the mound and Rick Ankiel drove in two runs, as the St. Louis Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals with a 3-0 win at Busch Stadium. Lohse (1-0) limited the Nats to four hits over seven innings and has yet to allow a run in 12 innings so far this season for St. Louis, Jason Isringhausen pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save of the season. Ankiel homered and doubled, while Ryan Ludwick added a triple for the Cardinals who start the season 5-1. The Red Birds will be at Houston tonight with the game starting at 6:00. KSMO will join the game in progress after Salem Tiger Baseball.

Alex Gordon drove in a pair of runs, and Brett Tomko hurled five shutout innings as Kansas City avoided a sweep by besting Minnesota, 3-1, in the finale of a three-game set at the Metrodome. Gordon finished 2-for-4 with a two-run single for the Royals, who are 4-2 on the young season. Billy Butler finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored, while John Buck was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Tomko (1-0) allowed six hits while walking one and striking out three in the game and left with a 2-0 lead. Ron Mahay, Leo Nunez and Jimmy Gobble protected the lead until Joakim Soria closed things out by striking out the side in the ninth to earn his third save of the year. The Royals are off today.

Funeral services for Eugene Schafer of Salem, age 80, will be held this morning at 11:00 in the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Green Forest Cemetery.

Funeral services for Sylvia Lunsford of Steelville will be held today at 1:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Interment will be in the Steelville Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lloyd A. Schafer of Salem, age 86, will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Green Forest Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Graveside services for Thomas Cochran of Spring, Texas, formerly of St. Louis, age 72, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the St. James Cemetery. All the arrangements are under the direction of the James & Gahr Mortuary in St. James.

Funeral services for Herbert Henson of Salem, formerly of Indiana, age 71, will be in Indianapolis at a later date at the Flanner-Buchanon Mortuary. Interment will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Waverly, Indiana. All arrangements are under the direction of the Dent County Memorial Chapel.
