This past Friday, the Dent County Fire Protection District’s Assistance to Firefighters grant application through the Federal Emergency Management Agency for new communication equipment was approved for $131,292. The federal share is $124,728 which is 95% of the grant amount while the district will have to pick up the remaining $6,564.00. Chief Brad Nash said that the grant would allow for a new base radio, two mobile repeaters, new mobile radios, new hand held radios and other accessories that will allow for better communication throughout the district. These new radios will meet all the new digital standards required by FEMA and the FCC. He said that the new equipment would be ordered in the near future once he determines which equipment will be the best for the district with a manufacturer’s rep. Once it is ordered, it should take about two weeks to receive the new equipment.

An accident occurred at 2:10 Tuesday afternoon in Dent County on Highway 19 about ten miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1996 Chevrolet Lumina driven by 20-year old Lynnzi Busbey of Salem was traveling northbound on Highway 19. The Chevrolet went off the left side of the roadway and struck an embankment before the vehicle overturned and came to rest off the roadway. Busbey and a passenger, 15-year old Logan Burke also of Salem, both suffered serious injuries and were flown by Air Evac to the St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis. No one was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Lumina was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident occurred at 10:50 Sunday night in Washington County on Highway 8 less than a half mile east of Dunnrovin Road that took the life of Steelville woman. According to the highway patrol report, a 2005 Ford Escape driven by 28-year-old Shalanna Harmon of Steelville was traveling east on Highway 8 when the Ford traveled off the right side of the road. Harmon then overcorrected and the Ford went off the left side of the road, where it overturned ejecting the driver from the vehicle. Harmon was taken to the Washington County Memorial Hospital by the Washington County ambulance and was pronounced dead at 12:01 early Monday morning. Harmon was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Elliot’s Towing.

Congratulations to Chandra Sullins and Mitch Lo for winning the Intercounty essay contest. Each student had to write a 250-500 word essay on what solutions they would propose to solve our nation’s energy challenges if they were Secretary of Energy. The essays were judged based on originality, understanding the subject, adhering to the topic, composition, grammar, and neatness.  The interviews were judged based on speaking ability, poise, presenting information beyond the scope of the question, personality, and appearance.

The Salem Tigers Baseball game with Ava Monday was postponed due to wet grounds and will be played this afternoon at 4:00 at Ava. You can hear the game this afternoon on KSMO Radio 1340 AM or online at ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Golf Team finished tied for fourth with Mt. Grove in a five-team meet in Willow Springs on Tuesday with a score of 186. Willow Springs won the meet with a 155. Individual scores for Salem included a 44 for Connor Stroburg, Ben Adams shot a 46, Dylan Sisco and Alan Benowitz each finished with a 48. Salem will host the Salem Invitational on Thursday with Cabool, Cuba, Houston, Licking, St. James, Steelville, and West Plains starting at 9:00 AM.

Albert Pujols drove in two runs to help the St. Louis Cardinals edge the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-2, at Busch Stadium. Kyle McClellan went six innings in his first big-league start, allowing two runs on six hits. The right-hander also had seven strikeouts and one walk. Miguel Batista (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless frames to pick up his first win. Ryan Franklin pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season. The Cards and Pirates play at 12:00 today on KSMO Radio.

Melky Cabrera drove home the game-winner in the 12th to help Kansas City take a 7-6 win over Chicago in the opener of a two-game set. Billy Butler's two-run home run in the eighth tied the game while Alex Gordon finished the game 3-for-5 with a two-run home run two runs scored for the Royals, who have won all four games this season in their last at-bat. Luke Hochevar went six innings in the start and was touched for six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits with two walks and a strikeout. Jeremy Jeffress (1-0) got the win for getting the final two outs in the top of the 12th. The two teams finish their two game series this afternoon.

Andy McDonald posted a goal and two assists as St. Louis downed Colorado, 3-1, at Scottrade Center. Kevin Shattenkirk and David Backes also scored for the Blues, who have won five of their last seven and beat Colorado for the first time in almost two years. Jaroslav Halak picked up the win with 26 saves. The Blues will be in Chicago tonight to face the Blackhawks at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.
