Kyle Poynter scattered six hits and struck out 10 Salem hitters as the Houston Tigers beat the Salem Tigers in SCA play Monday, 7-1. Ryan Smith and Aaron Shaw each had two hits for Salem. Albert Pujols hit a pair of home runs, knocked in three and scored four, and Yadier Molina belted a grand slam, as the reigning National League Central Division champion St. Louis Cardinals outslugged the Cincinnati Reds, 11-6, in the regular-season opener for both teams at Great American Ball Park. Pujols, the two-time defending NL MVP turned in a 4-for-5 day, while Colby Rasmus went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two RBI for the Cardinals. Chris Carpenter (1-0) picked up the win after allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts over six frames. The right-hander went 17-4 with a 2.24 earned run average in 28 starts last season. The Cards are off today and will face Cincinnati Wednesday night.
Johnny Damon and Miguel Cabrera each recorded two hits and two RBI, as the Tigers used a six-run seventh inning to come away with an 8-4 victory against Kansas City on Opening Day at Kauffman Stadium. Zach Greinke gave up just two runs and six hits, struck out four and walked one in outdueling Verlander. Then came the Royals bullpen, which coughed up the lead immediately as Roman Colon, Robinson Tejeda (0-1) and Juan Cruz combined to pitch a disastrous seventh.Yuniesky Betancourt hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Billy Butler had a bases-loaded, two-run single in the fifth for the Royals. The Royals also have the day off today.
Erik Johnson scored the game-winner 3:59 into overtime to lead the St. Louis Blues past the Columbus Blue Jackets, 2-1, Scottrade Center. The Blues have won two straight games and five of six to improve to four points behind idle Colorado for the lone remaining playoff spot in the West with three games left. Chris Mason stopped 27 shots as the Blues won their fifth straight at home.
Kansas City Royals have selected the contract of pitcher John Parrish from Omaha (PCL); and designated pitcher Anthony Lerew for assignment.
