The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2460 and 5550, and a crossover pipe would be installed on Dent County Road 5130. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2330, 2380, 4050, 4055, 4400 and 4403; with materials being added to roads 2330, 2380, 4050 and 4055. Larson also said that a crew would be patching chip and seal on Dent County Road 6150. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended a storm spotter’s class last Thursday evening at the Dent County Fire Station and will be attending a South Central County Commissioners Association meeting along with Commissioners Purcell and Larson on Wednesday in Licking. At the meeting, Joel Yelverton will be the guest speaker and will discuss the nationwide effort to restore the federal funding for the Secure Rural Schools Act. If this act would be cut from the federal budget it would affect Salem R-80 and Oak Hill R-1, because these districts have a great deal of National Forest land in their districts. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that polls will open this morning at 6:00 am and will close at 7:00 pm for the Municipal Election. The Commission will meet again on Thursday morning at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening in the city hall council chambers. The board heard from June Jordan Wisdom regarding a storm water problem she has at her residence at 1403 S. Henderson Street. Mayor Brown suggested the work on Henderson be the next project started, since it would take about a week to complete, then the workers will start on the Hunt Street project that is estimated to take 4 to 5 weeks to complete. The board approved the bid from Sportsfields4U to purchase 24 tons of infield dirt to dress the infields at the City Parks for $4,400. This is a budgeted expense. Mayor Brown reported that the city is responsible for trimming the trees on the right-of-way on Highway 19 inside the city limits and this work has been completed. Mike Fiaoni from the Department of Conservation inspected the Cedar trees that were damaged at the Cedar Grove Cemetery during the May 8^th storm last year. Several of the trees had root ball damage and must be removed. Alderman Jim McDaniels suggested that the cedar from these trees be made into something of historic value to be preserved. David Massengale from the Forestry Department will replace the Cedar trees with donated trees as part of the 150 trees being planted for the Sesquicentennial Celebration. Brown reported that MoDOT has been working on replacing the handicapped elevation to the sidewalks on Highway 32.  Eighteen notices for sheds and houses that need to be demolished have been sent to residents within the City limits. Brown reported that over 500 children have signed up for the baseball program with an additional 100 children playing on traveling baseball teams. In March, the Salem Fitness Center served 1,987 people and the Salem TCRC served 1,268 people at the Salem Freedom Activity Center. Brown said that the Business Expo would be held on Saturday, April 10^th at the High School Gymnasium from 9:00 to 1:00. He reminded the board that Spring Clean-Up weeks are scheduled for the weeks of April 19 and 26, and the City Wide Yard Sale will be held on Saturday, May 1.  Alderman Kenneth Nash asked that all departments give reports for the aldermen to review. He also asked about the progress on the employee handbook and City Attorney Nanci Wisdom is still reviewing it. Alderman Brad Nash asked about the policy for city workers when traffic control is needed and when safety vests should be worn. Nash also informed the board that the county has been looking into obtaining an interoperable communications system that would be county-wide and help with Emergency Management Services. The Board approved Bill No. 3194, an ordinance authorizing the Mayor to execute and agreement between the City of Salem and Mid-Missouri Municipal Power Energy Pool for Professional Services not to exceed $15,000 in a 12-month period. This agreement is to hire a consulting group to do studies and evaluations for Salem and the 17 other cities future electric power service. The board approved sending a petition for annexation of three lots in the Brandon Heights addition to the Planning and Zoning Committee for review. After the bills were approved, the meeting was adjourned.
