The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Thursday morning. In the road report District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 5600, 4210, 6600, and 6620 and brush was being cut on county road 6240. Purcell went on to say that chip and seal repair was being done on Dent County Road 5015, commonly referred to as the Doss Road. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that grading was being done on Dent County Roads 5280, 2150, 2140 and 2155; while materials were being hauled to Dent County Roads 5280, 2150 and 2155. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that on Tuesday he had been in St. James and presided over two appeal hearings at the Public Housing Authority office. The appeal involved residents from Washington County who had been participating in HUD programs and had been suspended for not providing required information. Skiles emphasized the importance for HUD participants to submit all required information for participation in the programs. Skiles went on to note that the Dent County Extension had sent over their Certification of Members and Officers from their recent election. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that she felt very good about the 19.43% voter turn out for Tuesday’s election. Curley went on say that absentee voting for the June election will start April 19th for military personnel and April 22nd for civilians. Curley also noted that the last day to register to vote in the June election is May 8th and there is only one issue on the ballot: the selection of 8th District US Representative to replace Joann Emerson. Candidates are Republican Jason Smith, Democrat Steve Hodges, Libertarian Bill Slantz and for the Constitution Party, Doug Enyart. Curley went on to say that she and Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams balanced on all accounts. The Commissioners voted to pay the bills. The next meeting of the Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 in the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.
Youth spring turkey season is this weekend: Saturday April 6th and Sunday April 7th. Youth hunters who are 6 to 15 years of age on opening day can take one male turkey or a turkey with a visible beard from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset Central Daylight Time. Regular spring turkey season starts April 15th and runs through May 5th. Regular season shooting hours end at 1:00 pm. CDT.
An accident occurred on Friday, March 29th at 11:58 in the morning on Highway 32 in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, Stephanie Sigman of Salem was making a left turn in her 2002 Mercury Mountaineer into the entrance of Wal-Mart when contact was made with a 1999 Ford F-250 driven by Michael Godi of Salem, who was traveling east on Highway 32 in the inner lane. The Ford was pulling a 16-foot flatbed trailer with a backhoe. The contact caused the Mercury to cross the center turn lane and westbound lanes and run off the north side of the roadway, making contact with the curb and sidewalk before coming to rest. The Ford ran off the roadway on the south side, making contact with the curb. The Ford jackknifed before coming to a rest. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage. Sigman and an occupant in her vehicle suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by ambulance. Godi suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by private means. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.
An accident occurred Wednesday night at 9:00 in Dent County on county road 6420 about seven miles southwest of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Dodge pickup driven by 19-year old Jonathan Hickernell of Salem was traveling northbound on county road 6420, lost control on the gravel roadway, went off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree stump. Hickernell suffered minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Dodge pickup sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.
An accident occurred at 2:00 Thursday afternoon in Reynolds County on County Road 862 about one mile north of Highway 72. According to the highway patrol report, 55-year old William Cope of Bunker was driving a 2006 Honda Rancher northbound when it overturned in the roadway. Cope suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. He was not wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Honda sustained minor damage and was removed from the scene by a private party.
The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their April meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and minutes from the March meeting, the Board reviewed a financial report and bills and signed file copies. During the calendar review it was noted that there is an Open House at the station on Saturday, April 20th. The monthly reimbursement report showed that there were 32 calls for March including: six structure fires, five brush fires, six landing zones, four first responder, four motor vehicle assistance, two mutual aid, three haz-mat, one meeting, and one training. Thus far, year-to-date there has been a total of 112 calls. In old business a contract for the District Chief was discussed and the Board will review a draft after it is presented from legal. Chief Brad Nash reported that the fire hydrant mapping is still in progress with around 100 hydrants having been mapped to date and he also reported on the District truck status and repair. The Board then set their May meeting for May 7th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm and the meeting was then adjourned.

Ben Loge threw a complete game giving up five hits and two runs, plus he went 2-3 at the plate to help lead the Ava Bears to an 8-2 win over the Salem Tigers in SCA play. Lane Stluka had an RBI double and Adam Ziske also drove in a run as the Tigers fall to 3-3 on the year and 1-1 in the SCA. The Tigers will host the Houston Tigers Monday at the SHS Baseball Complex.
The Salem Tennis Tigers won at Mountain View on Thursday, 9-0. Emily Moser collected two wins giving her 23 wins for her career, the most female wins in team history. Salem is 2-0 and plays at Houston tonight.
The St. Louis Cardinals had the day off yesterday but they will be in San Francisco this afternoon for the first of three games against the Giants. You can hear the game on KSMO, starting with the pre-game show at 3:00.
Kevin Shattenkirk scored the winner in the sixth round of the shootout as the St. Louis Blues took a 4-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday. Adam Cracknell scored his first two goals of the season for the Blues, who will host the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight at 6:30 and you can hear it on KSMO.
Jeremy Guthrie tossed six strong innings and received just enough support from Kansas City's struggling offense in a 3-1 decision over the Chicago White Sox that gave the Royals their first win of the season. The Royals will start a three game series with the Phillies today.

Funeral services for William Haffner of Jonesburg, age 69, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitaiton will be from 1:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery in Salem.
