The Salem R-80 Board of Education will conduct a Reorganization Meeting tonight at the boardroom starting at 7:30. After approval of the agenda and the certification of the election results, there will be the swearing in of the newly elected members by the Secretary of the Board. Superintendent Cindy Rumpf will then act as Temporary Chairman to during the selection of the new Board President and Vice President. The new Board President will then preside over the election of the Secretary and Treasurer. The newly elected Board members will then consider budget revisions, elect the MSBA delegate and alternative (BCCA) and address resignations. The Board will then vote to go into Executive Session to discuss personnel. The Board will then adjourn the Executive Session and move into a Budget Work Session. The Reorganization Meeting and Budget Work Session of the Salem R-80 Board of Education are open to the public.

The Salem Police Department released their report for the month of March. During the month, they wrote nine equipment repair orders, 19 summons to appear in court, 39 warning tickets, and 50 traffic tickets. The Salem Police Department investigated 14 accidents, two assaults, two burglaries, two reports of disorderly conduct, one report of domestic assault, three reports of domestic violence, three reports of driving while intoxicated, one report of driving while revoked, one report of endangering the welfare of a child, two reports of a lost and or stolen plate, and one report of a minor in possession of intoxicants. The department also investigated four reports of property damage, one report of resisting and or interfering with arrest, six reports of stealing, two reports of suicide attempts, one report of supplying intoxicants to a minor and five 96-hour commitments. They also investigated two reports of distribution/delivery/ manufacturing/possessing a controlled substance, two reports of distribution of a controlled substance, one reports of possession of barbiturates, three reports of possession of marijuana and one report of possession of synthetic drugs.  The police department received 1,669 calls for service during the month, handled 102 walk-ins to the station, and redirected 79 calls to the animal control officer. They spent 33 hours in court testifying, four hours as court bailiff and spent 28 hours teaching D.A.R.E. The calls in March included 43 calls for escorts, two calls for an intoxicated driver, three calls for prowlers, two calls for a suspicious person and/or vehicle, three intoxicated pedestrian calls, four calls for domestic disputes, and seven calls for a wrecker. There were two 911 calls, 10 calls for peace disturbances, six calls for alarms sounding, six calls for fights in progress, five ambulance assist calls, one fire call and one call for property damage.  The Salem Police Department drove a total of 9,183 miles and arrested 22 males and 11 females during the month of March.

Wonderful weather and an uptick in statewide turkey population helped young hunters to a successful youth spring turkey hunt. Each year, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) sets aside a weekend before the main, three-week spring turkey season for hunters age 6 through 15. Young hunters checked 4,319 turkeys, up from 3,898 in 2011. Top harvest counties were Franklin with 119 turkeys checked, Osage with 93, and Callaway with 81. This year’s was the highest so far, up 9.5 percent from the previous high of 3,945 in 2010. This year’s youth turkey season started earlier than normal to avoid a conflict with the Easter holiday. The main spring turkey season opens April 16^th and runs through May 6^th.
