The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that brush is being cut on Dent County Road 6245, and workers are checking roads for washouts and downed trees. He also said that a man was sent to Springfield for oil to do chip and seal repairs on Tuesday (today.) District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2120 and 4030, and repairs are being made to Dent County Road 2330. He said workers are also checking for washouts and downed trees. Larson went on to say that a truck went to Cuba for a load of cold mix. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he and Commissioner Larson attended the ribbon cutting ceremony Friday at the new Salem Coin-Op Laundry on Highway 32-72 West with owners Mike and Olivia McCluskey. He also wanted to clarify that both bills concerning the Missouri Department of Conservation being held liable for damages by elk (HB 115 and SB 299) have passed through their respective committees and are waiting to be scheduled to be heard on the floors of the House and Senate. Persons with comments on these bills should contact Representative Jason Smith and State Senator Dan Brown and make them aware of their opinion. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wants to remind everyone to vote as the polls on Tuesday will be open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. At the meeting, Mayor Gary Brown reported that the CART tax dollars were down about $1,000 from normal in the consent agenda. He reported about the Mid-Missouri Municipal Power Energy Pool meeting he and Alderman Ken Nash attended. Brown said that there were three proposals presented and one was an “evergreen proposal” which would lock the city into an agreement unless they can find another city to replace them that was thrown out by the pool. The second proposal was from Ameren UE and it called for a 23.6% increase in electric costs by the year 2018. Another proposal from MTMEVC called for a 17.5% increase. After the group elected 100% to go with the MTMEVC bid, they sent out an e-mail that said that the increase would be 6.7% with a three percent annual inflation figure. The costs do include the transmission fee. A draft contract will be brought to the City of Salem utility committee for their review. Mayor Brown said that Michael Wake from MoDOT was in town to check out the left turn activity at Highways 32-72 and McArthur, and that morning, there were not a lot of long delays. MoDOT may look at a new advance yellow turn light, but nothing has been decided. Brown said that health insurance quotes have been put out for bid, that the fence at the cemetery blew down from the winds Sunday night, and the police department improvements cost $13,543.00. City Attorney Nanci Wisdom did say that the employee manual is now ready for the aldermen to review and she will have it on the next agenda for a vote. Alderman Jerry Randell discussed the street number notice sent out in the city electric bills and said that there were no six inch letters available in town. He said that the four inch letters were visible form the road and Mayor Brown also said that some people even have numbers on their curbs. He felt that the ordinance should be updated to reflect these changes. The Board approved Bill #3222 creating the City Administrator position in the City of Salem, and tabled indefinitely Bill #3220 that also addresses the City Administrator Position. The board approved Resolution #3-2011 that supports the display of “In God We Trust” in the City Hall Council Chambers, and approved Bill #3221 which establishes a procedure to disclose potential conflicts of interest and substantial interests for certain municipal officials. After the bills are approved, the meeting was adjourned.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol released their reports involving arrests made in Dent County this past week. On Monday, March 28^th at 6:15 p.m., 57 year-old Ronald Gorson of Salem was arrested on three felony Dent County warrants for possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to the Dent County jail. On Friday, April 1^st at 12:15 a.m., 59 year-old Jerry Hurt of Salem was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, no proof of insurance, and failure to drive on the right half of roadway resulting in an accident. He was taken to the Dent County jail and later released.

The Salem Tigers Baseball game with Ava Monday was postponed due to wet grounds and will be rescheduled for Wednesday at 4:00 at Ava.

The Salem Track Team will be at Mountain View/Liberty today for a meet starting at 4:00.

The Salem Golf Team will be at Willow Springs today starting at 4:00 this afternoon.

The seventh and eighth grade Honors Choir members will join the Upper Elementary Honors Choir to sing the National Anthem on July 28^th at Busch Stadium. The band will be playing “God Bless America” prior to the choirs singing the National Anthem. Andrew McCutchen's two-run home run capped a four-run sixth inning to help the Pittsburgh Pirates take a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a three-game set. Lance Berkman and Allen Craig each drove in a run for the Cardinals, who dropped two of three at home against San Diego in the season-opening series. Kyle Lohse (0-1) was touched for four runs on six hits in seven innings. James McDonald takes the mound for Pittsburgh on Tuesday and will be opposed by Kyle McClellan tonight at 7:00. The Kansas City Royals had the day off and will host the Chicago White Sox tonight.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Colorado Avalanche tonight starting at 7:00.

Frank Haith stepped down as head men's basketball coach at Miami and was hired later Monday at Missouri. Haith received $1.5 million guaranteed for five years with an additional $100,000 in deferred annual compensation, Missouri said after officials met Monday night to approve the package. An automatic one-year extension would kick in May 1, 2012.
