An accident occurred at 11:10 Friday morning in Dent County on Highway 32 about three and half miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 1992 Chevrolet driven by 31-year old Rana Turner of Centerville, was traveling on Highway 32, when she ran off the right side of the roadway, struck an embank-ment, overtured several times, partially ejecting all occupants. Turner suffered serious injuries and was taken by St. John’s Lifeline to St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis. Passengers in the Chevrolet, 18-year old Troy Reando and 37-year old Michelle Helm both of Centerville, suffered serious injuries and were taken by Air Evac to St. John’s Hospital in St. Louis. Helm was the only one wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing.

The Municipal election will be held tomorrow for positions for the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors, City of Salem aldermanic and mayoral positions and school boards.  A.J. Seay was appointed by the Salem Memorial District Hospital Board to fill the seat vacated by Sheila Kunkel in District 2 and was unopposed to finish the five years left of Kunkel’s six-year term. Incumbent Dennis Fiebelman of the hospital board in District 3 will be opposed by Kenneth W. Reynolds. In the City of Salem, an East Ward Aldermanic position will be decided between George LaJoie and Jerry Randall as incumbent Jim McDaniels elected not to run again. The West Ward Aldermanic race will feature incumbent Kenny Nash against John Whelan. In the Mayoral race, incumbent Gary Brown will be opposed by Bill Riley, Jr. In the school board races, Oak Hill R-1 School District has three 3-year terms available and voters will decided between John Strebe, Duane Blackwell, Jessica Terrill and Sandra Headrick. Northwood R-4 School District has two 3-year terms open to be filled by the top two vote getters between Dave Tiefenthaler, Lon Reising, James Hayes and Vickie Martin. The Salem R-80 School Board also has two 3-year terms available. Incumbent Wade Jadwin, Angela Christesen, Carol Jordan, Joe Howard and Bernie Sirois are the candidates for those two positions. Three school districts will not have to have elections as they had only enough candidates to fill the open positions. Green Forest R-2 School District has two 3-year terms available and they will be filled by Craig Smith and Austin Kunkel. Dent-Phelps R-3 School District also has two 3-year terms open and both incumbents Darrell Skiles and Shirley Hobson were unopposed in their re-election bid. Northwood R-4 School District has one 1-year term and that position ill be filled by Jenna Dunn. Remember that absentee voting will be held today until 5:00 and the polls will open tomorrow from 6:00 in the morning until 7:00 in the evening.

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving an assault and traffic stops. On Thursday, March 25th at 12:47 a.m. an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. The report revealed a 41-year old Salem male had physically and sexually assaulted an 18-year old female and a 19-year old female both of Salem.  Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for sexual misconduct, assault, assault on a law enforcement officer and refusal to obey a lawful order. The suspect was incarcerated pending application for warrants. On 1:02 that same morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 48-year old Salem male for driving while intoxicated.  He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Friday, March 26th at 9:27 p.m. a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 28-year old Salem male for driving while suspended.  He was issued a summons to appear in court and released.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will conduct their meeting tonight at 7:00 in the City Hall Council Chambers. In hearing of persons, June Jordan Wisdom will discuss the storm water problem she has at her residence. After that, bids for 24 ton of infield dirt to dress the infields at the city park will be discussed. After the consent agenda, Mayor Gary Brown will give his comments and Aldermen Jim McDaniels, Jim Jackson, Kenneth Nash, and Brad Nash will discuss miscellaneous items concerning the city. City Attorney Nanci Wisdom will then discuss Biomass with the Board and also present a petition for annexation from AD-PAR Construction. AD-PAR is requesting annexation of property in the Brandon Heights Addition. The properties face Franklin Street and one faces Dale Street. City Clerk Mary Happel will then present Bill number 3193 for approval. Bill number 3193 is an ordinance needed in order for the Mayor to execute an agreement with Mid Missouri Power Energy Pool. After approval of the bill, the Board will then go into closed session. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.
