The Salem R-80 Board of Education will hold a re-organizational meeting this evening at 6:00 at the Salem R-80 Administration offices. At the meeting, the board will certify the election results before Board President Steve Watson swears in the newly elected members. Superintendent Steve Bryant will then act as the temporary chairman to select a new board president. The new president will then preside over the election of a new vice-president, secretary and treasurer and resignations. After the election of all officers, the board will then go into closed session to discuss personnel and student discipline. The re-organizational meeting is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 5:15 in the afternoon on Wednesday, March 28th at the intersection of Highway 19 South and Roosevelt in Salem. According to the Salem Police report, a gold 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis driven by Emily Oelsen of Salem, was turning left onto Highway 19 from Roosevelt and was struck in the front right side by a red 1989 GMC SK-1 traveling northbound on Highway 19 driven by Jeri Powell of Salem. Powell suffered minor injuries and was transported by private means for medical attention. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage and were towed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.
The Salem Police Department released their reports for the end of March involving fights, stolen cell phones, a burglary and shoplifting. On March 26th at 11:44 in the evening, an officer was sent to the 1200 block of South Macarthur in reference to a fight the led to the arrest of a 19-year old male and a 21-year old male both from Rolla for disorderly conduct. They were issued summons to appear in court and released. On March 29th at 7:00 in the morning, an officer was contacted in reference to a stolen cell phone at the Salem Jr. High School. The report revealed a 13-year old male and a 15-year old male both of Salem had stolen a cell phone. They were both detained and later released to their parents with a report being forwarded to the juvenile officer. At 12:27 the same afternoon, an officer was sent to the Salem High School in reference to a fight. The report revealed that two 17-year old Salem males had got in a fight in the hallway. Both were placed under arrest, issued a summons to appear in court and were released. On March 29th at 5:32 in the evening, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to a stolen cell phone. The report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a pink Motorola Razor cell phone from a locker at the Salem Sr. High School. The phone is valued at $200 and the report is under investigation. At 6:32 that evening, an officer was detailed to the 1800 block of South Oak in reference to a burglary. The report revealed person(s) unknown entered a residence by force, damaging the door, and they took some items from the residence valued at $500. The report is under investigation. On March 21st at 12:43 in the afternoon, an officer was sent to Wal-Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The report revealed that a 26-year old Rolla male was arrested for stealing a set of steak knives valued at $19.76. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will chip seal Route B in Shannon County, beginning today, weather permitting. The project will extend from the junction of Highway 19 and Route B, and continue to the far end of Route B. Finish work, including brooming of the roadway, will take place on Wednesday, April 11. The use of alternate routes is encouraged if possible. MoDOT performs chip-seal resurfacing on roads that are in generally fair to better condition. The benefits include crack sealing, increased skid resistance and correction of minor rutting, which extends the life of the pavement in a cost effective way. Motorists who must travel Route B should plan ahead and allow extra time due work zone delays. MoDOT urges motorists to proceed slowly through the work zone, especially while driving on the fresh-laid surface. Special attention should be paid to all work zone signs, which will guide drivers through the operation safely. The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball Program is offering signups today and tomorrow in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard Armory) from 4:00 to 6:00 PM and on Saturday, April 7th from 9:00 to noon. Signups will be held again in the on Thursday, April 12th and Friday, April 13th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. These will be the ONLY sign-ups for the Summer Baseball Program. This league is for all boys and girls that are currently age 4-12 years of age. The cost is $15.00 per child. For additional information, call the Parks & Recreation Department at 729-6290.

Carlos Beltran hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs and John Maine combined with two relievers on a two- hitter, as the New York Mets completed a three-game series sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with a 10-0 win at Busch Stadium. St. Louis' Braden Looper made his first career start after spending the first eight years of his big league career in the bullpen. Despite suffering the loss, the former Mets closer allowed three runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking one, in six innings. The Cards are off today.
J.D. Drew was 2-for-5 with a run batted in and scored once, as Boston cruised past Kansas City, 7-1, in the second installment of a season-opening three-game series. Josh Beckett (1-0) went five innings and gave up just two hits and one run while striking out five and walking four. Odalis Perez (0-1) was knocked around to the tune of five hits and four earned runs with three walks and three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.. Ross Gload went 2-for-3 with a double for the Royals. Jason LaRue drove in a run and Emil Brown scored in defeat. Daisuke Matsuzaka will make his major league debut today for Boston in the series finale against KC's Zack Greinke.

Funeral services for Jessie David (Bud) Nash of Jerome, age 86, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the Greeley United Baptist Church in Bunker. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00 at Greeley United Baptist Church in Bunker. Interment will be in the Crossville Cemetery in Bunker. Memorials are suggested to the Crossville Cemetery Fund.
