Congratulations to the Salem R-80 Band for receiving a 1 rating at the state music festival last week. Band members include Amber Blaylock, Hanna Bostic, Jeri White, Larissa Swift, Kayla Welch, Amber Lowe, Robyn Ayerst, Brandy Stanfast, Kasey Wainwright, Emily Green, Jake Raulston, Alicia Wallis, Dylan Pruitt, Ray Ritchey, TK Richardson, Gannon Craig, Breanne Hilderbrand, Kimberlee Bradford, Weston Richardson, Alan Benowitz, Austin Brake, Cameron Pilkington, Jack Swift, Emily Campbell, Kelsey Michno, Josiah Beckett, Alex Maggard, Chandler Labit, Bradley Yates, Kristin Ferry, Frank Schott, Shawn Bolerjack, Josh Knueven, Zach Williams, Ally Kearby, Duncan Hutchings, Josh Sheppard, Andre Whittaker, Michael Mielke, and Kyle Harrell. The band is under the direction of Hillary Alexander. Congratulations also go out to the vocalists and small ensemble members that received a 1 rating at the district music festival and qualify for state on April 29th. They include Sarah Medley and Adam Wood with vocal solos; and Amy Huitt, Sarah Medley, Mitch Lo, and Adam Wood as a mixed quartet.  The vocalist and small ensemble are under the direction of Elaine Russell.    

The Salem R-80 Administration held their public five-year planning meeting at the Salem Junior High Library on March 29th. With about 50 in attendance ranging from administrative staff, board members, teachers, parents and those with an interest in the Salem R-80 school district, groups were formed to brainstorm for the future of Salem R-80. After the individual groups come up with issues and concerns, they all came back together to collaborate and present their points of interest. The categories of interest included: facilities/building/grounds, staffing/personnel, community input, planning, curriculum/instruction/assessment, technology, new programs, discipline and governance. In facilities/buildings/grounds category, there was talk of a cafeteria for the Salem Junior High, updating the playground at William Lynch Elementary and a possible facility to be able to host district of conference events and more. In the staffing category, issues included additional support staff, aides returning, and supplemental pay to continue as well as other issues. Under the curriculum/instruction/ assessment category, the discussion included more advanced placement courses to be offered, an alternative school, improvement in vocational programs and more. In the technology category, the concerns were to continue to upgrade technology, expand career technology courses as well as other issues. Regarding the community input category the hope was for a parent volunteer program, an annual town hall meeting, and an up-to-date parent portal as well as a kiosk for Salem R-80 parents in local businesses for those with no Internet access and more. In the planning category, it was discussed to follow the progress and monitoring of these plans and goals, and have better coordination with the rural schools. Under new programs, the ideas presented included a daycare for students and staff, transitional kindergarten and more. In regards to discipline, the issues presented were to enforce discipline policies, review discipline policies, to address bullying more in schools, increase character education and implement PBS. In the governance category, issues included prayer before Board of Education meetings and the issues of retaining records. The next step will be to share these ideas with the Board of Education at their April meeting, and after receiving feedback from the Board a future meeting will be planned.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will be holding their next meeting tonight at 7:00 in the City Hall Council Chambers. At the meeting, the board will hear from Mayor Gary Brown on the MMMPEP meeting, the light signals at Highway 32-72 and McArthur, and the Public Works report. The alderman will also give their reports before the Introduction of Bills and Resolution. The Board will hear Bill #3220 that discusses creating the city administrator’s position that has incorrect wording and needs to be tabled indefinitely, Resolution 3-2011 that supports the display of “In God We Trust” in the City Hall Council Chambers in a prominent location above the city seal, Bill #3221 which would create a procedure to disclose potential conflicts of interests and substantial interests for certain municipal officials, and Bill #3222 that again discusses the creation of a city administrator. After the bills are approved, the board may then go into closed session. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen will be held tonight at 7:00 and the meeting is open to the public.

The West Plains Zizzers scored in every inning including five runs in the 2nd inning and six more in the 6th inning as they tripled up Salem Friday afternoon, 18-6 at the Salem Baseball Field Complex.  Salem had a three-run homer from Ryan Smith and a solo blast from Brady Floyd, but West Plains banged out 15 hits to go along with six walks and four hit batsmen. Salem is 3-3 on the year and is scheduled to be at Ava today for SCA play at 4:30. If played, you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

Jaime Garcia pitched his second career shutout, as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the San Diego Padres, 2-0, and avoided a three-game series sweep at Busch Stadium. Garcia (1-0) scattered four hits, walked two and struck out nine. Yadier Molina and Ryan Theriot each had a run-scoring single Skip Schumaker had a pair of hits and a run scored for St. Louis, which resumes its six-game home stand against Pittsburgh tonight. Matt Treanor hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 12-9 win over the LA Angels of Anaheim in the finale of a four-game set. Melky Cabrera and Billy Butler both hit solo home runs and Alex Gordon went 4-for-6 with an RBI and four runs scored for the Royals. Bruce Chen lasted five innings in the start and gave up five runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Tim Collins (1-0) got the win, going three innings and giving up just two hits with five strikeouts. The Royals have today off.

Patrik Berglund tallied two goals while Alexander Steen posted a goal and an assist, as the St. Louis Blues beat the Central Division rival Columbus Blue Jackets, 6-1. Andy McDonald, Carlo Colaiacovo and Chris Porter each lit the lamp for the Blues, who have won two of the last three but have already been eliminated from the playoffs. Jaroslav Halak made 23 saves in the win.

The seventh and eighth grade Honors Choir members will join the Upper Elementary Honors Choir to sing the National Anthem on July 28th at Busch Stadium. The band will be playing “God Bless America” prior to the choirs singing the National Anthem. St. Louis Cardinal tickets go on sale on this Wednesday. Call the Upper Elementary School at 729-4812, during regular school hours for more information. Two music groups from Salem, MO will be on the field at Busch Stadium together. How exciting is that!  New “Salem Music Rocks with the Cardinals” shirts will also be on sale at the Upper Elementary.

There will be no services for Calvin Lee Brooks Jr. of Salem, age 61, per his wishes. Junior Brooks was cremated. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Tressie Lorene Johnson of Salem, age 85, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary of Salem. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Internment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness.

Funeral services for Ellen Jean Smith of Jefferson City, age 76, will be Friday at 1:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitations will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:30 at the Freeman Mortuary of Jefferson City and Friday from noon until time of service at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Internment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association or the American Heart Association.
