Orlando Hernandez tossed seven strong innings and also drove in a pair runs to lead the New York Mets over the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-1, at Busch Stadium. Hernandez (1-0) got the win, allowing one run on five hits with two walks. Scott Rolen provided the offense for the Cardinals, hitting a solo homer. St. Louis got a solid start from newcomer Kip Wells. Wells (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs -- two earned -- on five hits in six innings. The right-hander, who was signed in the offseason, struck out seven and walked four. The Cards and Mets play again tonight at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.
St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter is expected to miss his next scheduled start because of inflammation in his right elbow. Carpenter complained of stiffness and soreness in his throwing elbow on Monday, the day after the Cardinals lost their season opener to the New York Mets 6-1. He was seen by Dr. George Paletta on Monday and diagnosed with inflammation in his elbow. Carpenter will be re-evaluated over the next three days. Carpenter was set to pitch on Friday in the series opener at Houston.
The Royals had the day off yesterday and will face the Boston Red Sox tonight.
