The 2014 Business Expo will be held this Saturday, April 5th from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Salem Upper Elementary gymnasium. The Business Expo is an excellent opportunity for local citizens and visitors to Salem to discover local businesses and what their products and services are. There will be a number of giveaways plus you can stop by the business booths and register to win a number of great prizes. Four main prizes will also be given away. They include two David Plank prints, a $100 gift certificate and two one-year e-edition subscriptions from the Salem News; a Handmade High Chair from the Bank of Salem; four St. Louis Cardinal tickets from Town and Country Bank; and the Mirabile Group is offering a $250 gift certificate for professional services.  The Business Expo is sponsored by the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, KSMO Radio, and Salem Publishing Company. An accident occurred at 9:25 Wednesday morning in Dent County on Highway 32 eight miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Kia Sorento driven by 20-year old Kayla Nelson of Bunker was traveling eastbound, swerved to avoid an animal in the roadway and ran off the right side. The Kia then struck an embankment and overturned, coming to rest against a tree. Nelson suffered minor injuries was transported by ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Kia Sorento sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Dent County Fire Protection District Board of Directors held their monthly meeting Tuesday evening at the fire station. After approval of the agenda and the minutes from their previous meeting, the Board reviewed a financial report and approved bills. The calendar showed an ISO Audit team will be at the station on April 10th to meet with Chief Brad Nash and Jack Emory of the City of Salem Water Department. In the monthly reimbursement report there were a total of 46 calls for March. Calls included: three structure fires, three flue fires, 15 brush fires, five landing zones, 12 first responder calls, three motor vehicle calls, one call for mutual aid, two haz-mat calls, one call for a meeting and one call for training. Total calls-to-date are 141 for the year. In old business, the parking lot repair is underway and concrete work is completed in the front of the west door. There was no new business and during reports, Chief Nash reported that the Blazer is still in need of more repairs. The Board then set their next meeting for Tuesday, May 6th at the fire station beginning at 6:00 pm and the current meeting was then adjourned.

Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol recorded zero traffic fatalities during the month of February this year. This is one less than February last year. There were 191 accidents with 58 injuries and one fatality for February last year compared to 183 accidents with 63 injuries and no fatalities for February this year. Crawford County reported 32 accidents with 15 injuries, Dent County reported 10 accidents with six injuries and Laclede County reported 31 accidents with eight injuries. Also reporting were Maries County with eight accidents with three injuries, Phelps County reported 52 accidents with 16 injuries and Pulaski County reported 50 accidents with 15 injuries. Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, wants to remind everyone that flash flooding caused by heaving spring rains is common on Missouri’s many creeks and rivers. If you come to a low spot in the road covered with running water, do not try to cross it. Even a few inches of fast moving water can sweep a motor vehicle into the creek or river.  

The University of Missouri Extension will hold it’s final session of the 2014 Dent County Extension Lunch and Learn Series on Friday, April 4th. The final session is entitled Credit: Why is Your Credit Important and it will be held at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, located at 1200 West Rolla Road, from noon to 1:00 p.m. For more information, contact the Dent County Extension office at 729-3196.

The City of Salem Spring Youth Soccer Program is just around the corner. This league is for all boys and girls that are currently age 4-12 years old. The final sign-ups will be today and Friday, April 4th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the front lobby of the Community Center @ the Armory. The cost is $20 per child and for more information contact City of Salem Parks & Recreation Director, Greg Nash at 729-6290.

The Salem Tiger baseball team will host Potosi this afternoon at 4:30 at the Salem High School Baseball Field Complex. Salem is 0-4 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com.

Salem Tiger track and tennis will be in action this afternoon. Salem track will host a track meet in Salem at 4:00 while Salem tennis will be in Willow Springs at 4:00.

Five hours and 25 minutes after the game was scheduled to start, Chris Heisey gave the Cincinnati Reds a walk-off win. Heisey's pinch-hit single in the ninth inning scored Ryan Ludwick to lift the Reds to a 1-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in a rain-delayed game that was dominated until the end by good pitching. St. Louis starter Michael Wacha pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out seven, walking one, and allowing three hits. Kolten Wong, Matt Carpenter, and Allen Craig collected a base hit each, the only three hits for St. Louis on the night. The Cards and Reds play at 11:00 this morning and you can hear it on KSMO.

Ian Kinsler singled home Austin Jackson for the winning run to lift the Tigers to their second straight walk-off win, as Detroit downed Kansas City, 2-1, in 10 innings at Comerica Park. Alex Gordon hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth to tie the game for Kansas City, who saw starter Jason Vargas go seven innings allowing one run while striking out six. Omar Infante finished with two hits and Salvador Perez’s double was Kansas City’s lone extra base hit. The Royals will play the Tigers again this afternoon at 12:08.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Buffalo Sabres tonight at the Scottrade Center. The Blues are 51-17-7 on the year and are one point behind Boston in the race for the Presidents' Trophy. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.

Funeral services for Marilynn M. Krenning of Rolla, formerly of St. James, age 84, will be held Saturday at 1:00 at the St. Johns Lutheran Church in St. James. Visitation will be held from 11:30 until service time at the church. Interment will be in the St. James Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the St. Johns Lutheran Church of St. James or the American Heart Association. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of St. James.

Memorial services for Paula Rae Borg of Salem, age 67, will be held at a later date at the St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Granite City, Illinois. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

There will be no services for Bonnie Jean Holland Rueter of Salem, age 92. Memorials may be made to the Backpack program at the Salem United Methodist Church. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
