The City of Salem Board of Alderman held their meeting Monday evening at the City Hall Council Chambers. After approval of the agenda, the CART funds were reported at $13,792.84. During the hearing of persons, Bill Stack was in attendance to update the Board on the Food Pantry and new programs. Stack reported that for 2011 the Food Pantry started out averaging 500 people a month providing food, health and hygiene items and currently provide food assistance to over 1,100 residents monthly with items valued over $40,000 each month. He also brought in information for the city to look into as far as CD rates that average higher rates, but it did required funds to be locked in for 5 to 7 years. Mayor Gary Brown asked Stack if he could provide information regarding any other municipalities in Missouri using these services.  In unfinished business, the limb pick-up policy was addressed and it was decided that there would be one pick-up day a month. Limbs could be bundled and left curbside as the pickup crews would bring along the chipper for shredding as they go. Limbs that are bundled would not be required to be in plastic bags. Director of Public Works & Engineering Bill Huffman was not in attendance as Mayor Brown updated the Board on various issues. Routine maintenance is being performed on electric lines and poles, water meters are currently being read and sewer lines are being cleaned and checked by camera. The Street Sweeper has been repaired and is back in service. City Administrator Clayton Lucas reported that work at the Al Brown fields continues as the fences are down, the poles and press box are coming out. He is also looking into the E-payment process for residents to pay their bill online. Alderman Kenneth Nash reported that he had gotten complaints about the lights at the tennis courts left on all night, the water problem at the federal housing complex and a sawdust problem. Alderman Haydn Powell reported a complaint about a letter that a resident received about property owned on Highway 19 North by the roadside park. Mayor Gary Brown wanted to thank the Alderman for attending the Business Expo, City Clerk Mary Happel for the display she put together and the D.A.R.E. table at the Expo. Brown reported that on Saturday, April 28^th people will be needed to play hurt or injured as there will be an Emergency Drill that will start in the morning hours and last most of the day during the practice and drills of Emergency personnel. Resolution #7-2012, a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute and employment contract between the City of Salem and Clayton E. Lucas, II; and resolution #8-2012, a resolution authorizing the mayor to execute a technical assistance contract between the City of Salem and the Meramec Regional Planning Commission for the asbestos inspection consulting services at the Old Middle School for $1,350, were both approved. The City of Salem was asked by Mary Haywood from Bourbon representing CASA, to prepare a Proclamation in support of National Child Abuse Prevention Month was also approved. The then voted to go into Closed Session for the purpose of discussing real estate, litigation and personnel. 

The April General Municipal Election for Dent County is today. Polls will be open from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm. Running for the 2-year term of Mayor in Salem is incumbent Gary Brown and opposing is Susan D. Smith. Incumbent Gerald E. “Jerry” Randall is opposed by Vicky Humphrey for the East Ward Aldermanic seat and incumbent Kenneth Nash is opposed by Bill Riley, Jr. and Randy S. Atchley for the West Ward Aldermanic seat. The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors has one 6-year term and Leon Kreisler is running opposed by Ray Bruno. The Salem R-80 School Board has two 3-year terms open on their Board and incumbents Chris Heavin and Carrie Coffman Snider are being opposed by Barry Wainwright. The Dent-Phelps R-III School District has two 3-year terms and the candidates are, Susie Cahill, Colleen M. Lebel, Steve E. Watkins and Alisa Brookshire. The North Wood R-IV School District has two 3-year terms available and vying for those seats are Dennis (Dee) Jessen, Texas Nall, Jarred Brown and Carl Plank. The Oak Hill R-I and Green-Forest R-II School Districts had enough seats available for those that applied for the positions. In the City of Bunker Gary Conway, Jr. is running unopposed for the two-year Mayoral seat, there are two 2-year term Aldermanic positions in Bunker, and Sabrina Watson, Sharon (Hodge) Wisdom and Thomas Case are running for those seats. Nancy Amaral is running unopposed for the 2-year term of Tax Collector.
