KSMO Radio will rebroadcast the Candidate Forum that was held on March 26th at the City Hall Auditorium. The Dent County Commissioners held their meeting Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5130, 5590 and 5600, and that grading and ditch work consisting of a culvert would be done on Dent County Road 6010 along with cleaning out around a bridge. Also a bridge on county road 6580 would be cleaned out. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson reported that some chip and seal repair would be done on Dent County Roads 3220 and 3230. Larson said that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3250, 3260 and 3270. He also reported that rock would be added and then grading would be done to Dent County Roads 2520, 2540 and 5300, and ditch work would be done on Dent County Road 3233. Dent County Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that work is progressing at the Judicial Building Annex as community service workers are painting. Skiles reported that he would be attending a Central Regional Workforce Investment meeting in Rolla. Skiles also reported that the sales tax revenue for the first quarter of this year was down about $6,000 compared to the same time last year. Sales tax revenue for the first quarter of 2009 was $175,400 compared to $181,400 for last year. Also down for the first quarter was the cart funding by $8,000 for this year for the road and bridge department. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the Dent County Clerk’s office will be open Saturday from 8:00 am to noon for absentee voting and Monday, April 6th is the last day to absentee vote. Curley also wanted to remind voters that the Dent-Phelps R-III and Northwood R-IV School Districts would not be holding elections for their school boards. Paul Frisbee from Anderson & Associates in Rolla stopped by to discuss with the commission the improvements to the Judicial Building and the commission tabled approving anything until Frisbee could get back to them with an updated proposal. The Commission had previously advertised for bids for diesel and gasoline for the County for the rest of the year and decided that they would continue to buy on an as needed basis rather than lock in a price. The Dent County Commissioners are looking at buying two new 2007 Sterling dump trucks for $161,672 and contacted the company to ask more questions before a final decision is reached. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 am at the courthouse and that meeting is open to the public. 

The Salem Police Department released their reports involving burglaries and property damage. On Wednesday, March 25th at 12:40 and officer was detailed to the 100 block of South Tower in reference to a burglary.  The report revealed that a person or persons unknown forcibly entered a residence and took $1,300 cash and prescription medications valued $120.  On Thursday, March 26th at 2:10 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to the 300 block of North Russell in reference to a burglary.  The report revealed that a person or persons unknown entered a garage of a residence and took a hammer drill, cordless drill, jigsaw and a 12-volt battery all valued $456. At  3:35 that same afternoon, an officer was detailed to the City of Salem Garage located at 309 East Truman in reference to property damage.  The report revealed that a person or persons unknown broke the glass of a window on the west side of the building.  The value of the damage is approximately $50. Anyone with any information regarding the burglaries or the property damage reports, which are still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

The Cardinal pocket schedules have arrived and are available around town and at the KSMO Radio Station lobby.

The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball, Softball and T-Ball Programs are just around the corner. Signups for children ages 4-14 years old will be held on today and then again on Thursday and Friday, April 9th, 10th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The final sign-up will be held on Saturday, April 11th from 9:00 am to noon. All sign-ups will be held in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center. The leagues are for all boys and girls age 4-14. The cost is $15 per child. For additional information contact the Parks and Recreation Department by calling 729-6290.

The Salem Baseball Tigers game with Potosi yesterday was rained out and will be made up today at 4:30 from Potosi. You can hear that game on KSMO and online at ksmoradio.com starting with Tiger Talk at about 4:15. Salem is 3-0 on the year.

The Salem Open Track meet was postponed yesterday and has been rescheduled for today starting at 4:00 at the Salem track.

The Salem Golf Team will be at Houston today starting at 4:00.

David Backes scored four goals, including the game-winner with 4:07 to play, to lead the playoff-hopeful St. Louis Blues to a 5-4 win over the Detroit Red Wings. Andy McDonald had a goal and an assist while Chris Mason made 34 saves for the Blues, who have won six of their last seven games. The recent surge has allowed St. Louis to get in the playoff hunt and the team currently has 85 points, which is good enough for eighth place in the Western Conference.

Colby Rasmus homered as part of a 2-for-4 effort, and the St. Louis Cardinals closed out their Florida spring training schedule with a 6-3 victory over the Florida Marlins. Rasmus drove in three runs and scored twice, as the Cardinals scored four times in the ninth to win the game. David Freese had three hits, while Todd Wellemayer gave up three runs on six hits in five innings in the start. The Cardinals will leave Florida for Memphis, where they will take on their Triple-A affiliate, the Redbirds, in a pair of exhibitions to prepare for the regular season. St. Louis Cardinals have optioned outfielder Joe Mather to Memphis (Int.).

Adam Fox hit a three-run homer to lead Texas over Kansas City, 9-3, in Cactus League action. David DeJesus, Shane Costa and Alberto Callaspo knocked in a run each for the Royals. Horacio Ramirez was tagged for nine hits and six runs in six innings for the loss. These two teams will face off in Frisco, Texas on Friday and at The Ballpark in Arlington on Saturday to prepare for the regular season.

Funeral services for Charles Eugene “Gene” Crider of St. James, age 77, will be held this morning at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Interment will be in the Park Lawn Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion.

Funeral services for Lou McFarland of Rolla, age 80, will be held this afternoon at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

A Memorial service for Kenneth Monroe Brokering of Salem, age 89, will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Long Term Care Unit of the Salem Memorial District Hospital. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Glenna Pauline Walker of Salem, age 78, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
