The Salem Junior Varsity Quiz Bowl Team captured second at the JV Quiz Bowl State Finals at Marshall, Missouri this past Saturday. The Salem Team was undefeated in the morning and afternoon rounds to earn a spot in the state final four. Salem won their semi-final match and would face Savannah in the state final. After fierce play, Savannah narrowly defeated the Tiger Quiz Bowl Team to take the state title. Named to the All-State team were Jenna Homeyer and Matthew Prince. Jenna medalled with the second highest points scored overall in the tournament and Matt medalled with the fourth highest points scored in the tournament. The Salem Junior Varsity Team is comprised of captain Jenna Homeyer, Matthew Prince, Seth Gott, Megan Greenshields, Bret Hagler, Cody Nickles, Crickett Stroburg, Sarah Reeves, Julianna Bermudez, Philip Moser, Angie Gee and James Frederick. The Salem Varsity Quiz Bowl Team will be in Ava for District finals on April 14^th. If Salem wins there, they will travel to Columbia for the varsity state finals. Salem last won the varsity title in 2001.

The City of Salem Board of Aldermen held their regular meeting Monday night at the city hall council chambers. Alderman Mike Whitley was not in attendance. Prior to the meeting a public hearing was held to discuss annexation of 12 properties including part of the Spring Creek Golf Club into the city limits. The Planning and Zoning committee will meet on May 7^th prior to the alderman meeting, to establish the proper zoning for each property. James Mathews was in attendance to discuss a water drainage problem on his property located between Center and Walker Street off of Grand.  Mr. Mathews wants the City to either purchase the one-acre piece of property or to change the flow of the water that sits on his property from the SBU campus. The alderman will discuss this during closed session. Park and Recreation Director Greg Nash presented the Park Board’s recommendation to increase the city pool rates for 2007. The pool rates have not been increased since at least 1989 when the pool was remodeled. With the increase in minimum wage, the board thought an increase was necessary. The board approved raising the rates for individuals from $1 to $2, adult rates will be $3 and seniors will be $2.50.  They also increased the season pass rates. Individual passes will increase from $25 to $40 and family passes from $60 to $80. Alderman Jim McDaniels asked about adding a vehicle barricade to the city parking lot that is used by the Salem Library patrons.  A car recently rolled off of the lot into a private residence.  He also suggested that bids be obtained and a long-range plan be developed to improve the current police department. The vicious dog ordinance  was discussed and the committee members will meet in the near future. City spring clean-up weeks are scheduled for the weeks of April 9^th and 16^th, and the city-wide yard sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 5^th.  Alderman Bill Riley suggested getting prices to replace the city’s natural gas furnaces with electric furnaces to lower expenses. Economic Development Director Sharon Tubbs reminded the aldermen of the Business Expo scheduled for April 21^st and the Town Hall Meeting on April 23^rd at 7 PM in the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room. Mayor Brown reported that a request has been made to close off Rolla Road between Hickory and Pershing during the Roots Festival for a car show. The street department has been working on the new soccer field road as well as fixing potholes on city streets. Brown reported that a workshop would be held to review the results of the recent community assessment survey, before setting the capital improvements schedule. Brown reported that the police department would receive several new guns for the officers. After approving the bills, the board went into closed session to discuss litigation and real estate.

The Dent County Schools: Oak Hill R-1, Green Forest R-2, Dent-Phelps R-3 and Northwood R-4, will dismiss early on Friday, April 6^th and will not be in session on Monday, April 9^th. Classes will resume on Tuesday, April 10^th. Dismissal times on Friday for Salem will be 11:15 for William Lynch Elementary, 11:20 for the Upper Elementary and 11:30 for the Junior High and Senior High. The rural school will all dismiss at 11:45.
