The Salem Police Department released their reports involving a traffic stop, assault and a theft. On Friday, March 27^th at 5:41 in the evening, an officer stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation. The stop led to the arrest of a 45-year old Salem woman for driving while intoxicated and an open container. She was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On Saturday, March 28^th at 12:43 in the early morning, a 28-year old Salem woman contacted the station in reference to an assault. The report led to the arrest of a 41-year old Salem man for the assault. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Later that same morning at 10:48, an officer was detailed to the 1300 block of East First Street in reference to a theft. The report revealed between March 25^th and March 26^th, a Canon digital camera and case were stolen from the residence. The camera is valued at $270. At 3:30 that afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference to an assault. The victim stated she had been assaulted the previous evening, March 27^th at 8:30 p.m. in the 400 block of West Fourth Street. The report led to the arrest of a 17-year old Salem man who was issued a summons to appear in court and released. Anyone with information on the theft, which is still under investigation, is asked to please contact the Salem Police Department by calling 729-4242.

Boat owners will receive a new boat/vessel registration renewal notice early in April. The new notices will be mailed by the Missouri Department of Revenue for boats, Jet Ski and other vessel registrations that will expire as of June 30, 2009. The old renewal notice was a full sheet of paper mailed in a standard envelope but the new form is in a smaller postcard format that will be handier for boat owners and will also result in lower postage costs for the department. The department is also changing the way it provides marine pocket cards to its customers. The cards are issued to boat/vessel owners and must be carried by the owner while the vessel is in operation. Currently, the cards are printed and mailed to owners about one week after their registration has been reviewed. Under the new system, the cards will be printed directly on customer’s receipts when they renew their registration at a local license office. Customers receiving new boat/vessel titles and registrations will continue to receive the pocket cards by mail. The new format of the renewal notice will save the department about $14,800 and the change in how pocket cards are distributed will save about $42,600. Ronald Leon Robinson was sentenced to 120 months in prison for illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, according to United States Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway. The 48-year old Robinson from Edgar Springs, MO, pleaded guilty in January to one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, in connection with an incident on February 8, 2008, in which Robinson fired shots from his residence while a police officer was responding to a nuisance call on Robinson’s front porch. He appeared Wednesday for sentencing before United States District Judge Carol E. Jackson, in St. Louis. Hanaway commended the work on the case by the Edgar Springs Police Department, the Rolla Police Department, the Phelps County Sheriff’s Office, the Phelps County Prosecutor’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and Assistant United States Attorney Cristian M. Stevens, who handled the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

An accident happened in Dent County on County Road 4170 about a mile east of Salem at 10:53 Wednesday night. According to the highway patrol report, 16-year old Dallas Agers of Salem was driving a 2004 Chevy Trailblazer eastbound when he failed to negotiate a curve and ran off the left side of the roadway where the vehicle struck a tree. Agers suffered minor injuries and was taken by a private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital for treatment. Agers was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Trailblazer sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene.

The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball, Softball and T-Ball Programs are just around the corner. Signups for children ages 4-14 years old will be held on today and tomorrow and then again on Thursday and Friday, April 9^th, 10^th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. The final sign-up will be held on Saturday, April 11^th from 9:00 am to noon. All sign-ups will be held in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center. The Salem Baseball Tigers are scheduled to be at Potosi today to face the Trojans at 4:30. Salem enters the game with a 3-0 record. (POSTPONED! RESCHEDULED for tomorrow at 4:30)

The Salem Tiger Track Teams will host the Salem Open today at the high school track starting at 4:00, weather permitting. (POSTPONED and RESCHEDULED for tomorrow at 4:00.)

Jonathan Toews and Samuel Pahlsson each tallied in the first period as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the St. Louis Blues, 3-1, at United Center. Jeff Woywitka scored for the Blues, who had their five-game winning streak snapped. St. Louis is now one point out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. Chris Mason, who was making his 28th straight start between the pipes, made 27 saves for St. Louis. The Blues will be in Detroit tonight to face the Red Wings and you can hear that game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:30.

Omir Santos homered twice and had three RBI to lift the Mets over the Cardinals in a 5-2 spring training decision. Kyle Lohse was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in a six-inning start for St. Louis.

Mark Teahen, Billy Butler and Alex Gordon each slugged solo home runs in the Royals' 6-5 spring training win over Colorado. Gordon and Teahen each had two hits, while Gil Meche earned the win after allowing a run on three hits and four walks in four innings of work for Kansas City.

Kansas City Royals sent first baseman Ross Gload and cash to the Florida Marlins for a player to be named later on Wednesday.Gload, who turns 33 on Sunday, appeared in a career-high 122 games last year for Kansas City, batting .273 with 37 RBI and 46 runs scored.

Funeral services for Charles Eugene “Gene” Crider of St. James, age 77, will be held Friday at 10:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Park Lawn Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion.

Funeral services for Lou McFarland of Rolla, age 80, will be held Friday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

A Memorial service for Kenneth Monroe Brokering of Salem, age 89, will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Long Term Care Unit of the Salem Memorial District Hospital. All the arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Glenna Pauline Walker of Salem, age 78, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
