There will be a public hearing tonight at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington beginning at 6:45 for the purpose of discussing annexation. The City of Salem Board of Alderman will then conduct their meeting beginning at 7:00 PM. The Board will hear from James Mathews regarding drainage problems on the property located behind the Treatment Center. City Attorney Mark Weaver will report on the Public Hearing held prior to the Board meeting on properties requesting annexation. In unfinished business, the Board will discuss the proposed rates for the pool along with pool rates from other cities for comparison. Alderman Jim McDaniels would like discuss an update on the dog ordinance and enforcement of the current ordinance, the Library parking problem, bids for updating & remodeling of the Police Station, fireworks preparation, City clean-up weeks of April 9th and April 16th and the City wide yard sale on May 5th. Alderman Bill Riley, Mike Whitley and Jim Jackson would also like to discuss miscellaneous items involving the city and those will all be followed by comments by Mayor Gary Brown. After the approval of bills presented by City Clerk Mary Happel, the Board will then go into Executive Session for the purpose of discussing personnel, real estate and litigation. The regular meeting of the City of Salem Board of Alderman is open to the public.

On Friday and Saturday, Salem participated in the District Music Festival at East Central College in Union. Earning a One Rating with a State Medal was the Salem Chamber Singers and the Women’s Choir. Also earning a One Rating with a chance to go to the state competitions were the Boys Double Quartet, Sam Apperson, Jessica Braman, Janeen Hankinson on French Horn, and Amanda Wood who earned a One Rating on both vocal and baritone solos. Congratulations Tigers!

The Salem Police Department released their reports for March 22nd through the 26th involving traffic stops. On March 22nd at 1:43 in the morning, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 22-year old Columbia male for driving while intoxicated. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. On March 22nd at 10:38 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 29-year old Perryville male for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He posted bond on the charges and was released until his court date. On March 23rd at 9:58 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation that led to the arrest of a 25-year old Salem male and a 20-year old Salem female for possession of marijuana. Both were issued summons to appear in court and released. On March 26th at 9:59 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped inlieu of the driver having an active warrant for his arrest. A 21-year old St. James male was placed under arrest on an active warrant from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department. He was incarcerated pending extradition.

The United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service is informing the public that they have signed a Decision Notice and Finding of No Significant Impact for the East Karkaghne Analysis Area Project authorizing the implementation of Alternative 2. The decision guides management on 12,772 acres of National Forest System lands in Reynolds County.  This action is for the purposes of improving forest health by salvaging dead and dying black and scarlet oaks. This decision is subject to an appeal. Those wishing to appeal must do so within 45 days. The Internal Revenue Service is giving taxpayers two extra days this year to file their tax returns. The I-R-S says it'll move the normal deadline of April 15th, which falls on a Sunday this year, to the following Tuesday, April 17th for Americans to file their tax returns and pay the taxes they owe. Since Monday, April 16th is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in the nation's capital, taxpayers will have until Tuesday’s deadline on April 17th.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will host Cabool today in SCA play starting at 4:30 at the SHS Baseball Field Complex. Salem enters the game with a 3-2 record. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at www.ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Jr High Track Teams will participate in the Salem Open today starting at 4:00.

The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball Program is just around the corner. Sign-ups will be held in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center (formerly the National Guard Armory) in the evening on Thursday, April 5th, Friday, April 6th, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM and on Saturday, April 7th from 9:00 to noon. Signups will be held again in the evening on Thursday, April 12th and Friday, April 13th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. These will be the ONLY sign-ups for the Summer Baseball Program. This league is for all boys and girls that are currently age 4-12 years of age. The cost is $15.00 per child. For additional information, call the Parks & Recreation Department at 729-6290.

Paul Lo Duca drove in three runs and Tom Glavine threw six strong innings, as the New York Mets used solid defense to beat the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals, 6-1, in the first game of the 2007 season. The opener of the three-game series, a rematch of last year's National League Championship Series, which St. Louis won in a dramatic seventh game, proved to be a defensive clinic run by the Mets. They surged to a 5-0 lead by battering 2005 Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter, and then used spectacular defense, turning four double plays, to quell the Cardinals. St. Louis couldn't solve Glavine (1-0), who quieted the Busch Stadium crowd with controlled pitching. The left-hander scattered six hits, allowed one runs, walked two and struck out three. The Cardinals have the day off today.

Andy McDonald scored twice, including the game-winner 25 seconds into overtime, and the Anaheim Ducks notched a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. David Backes and Lee Stempniak scored for the Blues, who have lost three of four. St. Louis, heading to another early offseason, completed its home schedule with the loss. The Blues' last four games are all on the road. Jason Bacashihua stopped 24 shots for St. Louis. The Blues will be in Dallas tonight at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Graveside services for Peggy Levon Jean Weber, age 37, of Salem, will be held this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Weese Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of Wilson Mortuary.

Funeral services for Stanley J. DeGraffenreid Sr. of Rolla, age 71, will be held Wednesday at 10:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 at the Eldon City Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps Regional Hospice or VFW Post 2025.
