The Salem Police Department released reports involving damage to private property and a shot fired during a confrontation. On Friday, March 20th at 12:10 in the afternoon, an officer made contact with a 21-year old Salem male at the station, who turned himself in on an active arrest warrant from Springfield, Missouri. He was given a date to appear in court and released after posting bond. That same afternoon at 1:23, an officer was detailed to the 700 block of South Sligo in reference to damage to private property. The investigation of the report revealed a 17-year old Salem male had shot a BB gun hitting a window and siding of a residence causing damage valued at $150.00. He was taken into custody for property damage, was issued a summons to appear in court and was released. On Sunday, March 22nd at 8:36 in the evening, an officer made contact with a 20-year old Salem male in the 300 block of East Roosevelt who had an active arrest warrant from Rolla, Missouri. He was taken into custody on the warrant and released with a date to appear in court after posting bond. On Monday, March 23rd at 10:35 pm, an officer was detailed to the 100 block of East Third in reference to a shot fired from a pistol during a confrontation. The investigation of the report revealed a 48-year old male from Salem fired one shot from a 9 mm handgun during a confrontation hitting himself in the leg. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect for assault and the unlawful use of a weapon. He was incarcerated pending the application of a warrant. On Tuesday, March 24th at 11:07 in the morning, an officer was dispatched to Salem Community Center @ the Armory located at 1200 West Rolla Road in reference to property damage. That investigation revealed someone had damaged a basketball backboard and goal valued at $600.00. The report is still under investigation. An accident occurred at 3:50 Monday afternoon in Phelps County on county road 2290 at Route V. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 52-year old David Hood of Rolla was traveling eastbound. The Chevrolet traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a guardrail, became airborne and overturned several times coming to rest on the driver’s side in a creek. Hood suffered serious injuries and was flown by Lifeline to University Hospital in Columbia. He was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet Silverado sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Spurgeons Towing.

Congratulations to Salem’s own, Brady Hagler, son of John and Jennifer Hagler. Brady is a senior at the Salem High School and has signed his letter to rodeo at Northeastern Okalahoma Agricultural and Mechanical (A&M) College NEO. He has been into rodeos for two years, and was scouted by NEO at the high school rodeos by their recruiting team. Brady is the first student from Salem to sign with a college rodeo team and is being coached by Kolby Ungeheuer.

The Phelps County Public Housing Agency continues to take applications to help area families pay rent. The PHA will accept applications in April with two dates at its St. James office. Applications will be accepted at the St. James office from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM today and April 15th. The St. James office is located at the Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC), #4 Industrial Drive in St. James. Persons may visit www.meramecregion.org and click on the Phelps County Housing Agency link to print an application, fill it out, and bring it with them to the PHA location. All adults must sign the application prior to submitting. The Phelps County PHA is an Equal Opportunity Housing Agency that offers rental assistance to very low-income families in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Washington counties, and Phelps County, outside the city of Rolla. Persons needing directions to the Phelps County PHA offices or needing additional information may call (573) 265-4200, extension 130.

Guests can enjoy spring wildflowers at Montauk State Park on April 4 and April 18. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the events will be held at 9:00 in the morning on both days. Participants should meet at the park naturalist’s office for the free, public programs. The park naturalist will lead a group in a hands-on wildflower search. Wildflower books will be available, but guests are encouraged to bring their own guidebooks and cameras. Guests will walk a short distance along a trail while searching for spring wildflowers. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Montauk State Park is located 22 miles southwest of Salem on Highway 119 in Dent County. Jon Arzt raced home on a Lane Duncan wild pitch in the bottom of the 7th inning of the first game to give the Salem Tigers a 2-1 Tuesday at the SHS Field. Arzt was 2-2 in the game with a double and single. Kory Ramsey went the distance giving up six hits and one run, striking out 9 and walking no one. In the second game, Licking pushed a across a run in the 8th inning to win by the score of 3-2. Salem is 2-3 on the year and they will be in Potosi Thursday.

The Salem Tennis team swept Houston Tuesday, 11-0 to go to 2-0 on the year. They will be in Willow Springs Thursday at 4:00.

Ichiro Suzuki singled home the winning run in the ninth inning to give the Miami Marlins a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday. Kolten Wong and Scott Moore each drove in a run while Pete Kozma scored both runs for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright allowed two runs -- one earned -- on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. The Cards will play the Mets today.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jaime Garcia will start the season on the 15-day disabled list because of continuing left shoulder issues. The DL move is retroactive to March 27. The Cardinals purchased the contract of pitcher Carlos Villanueva, who signed a minor league deal with the team in February. The right-hander was 5-7 with a 4.64 ERA in 42 games, five of which were starts, last season for the Chicago Cubs.

Kendrys Morales went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Eric Hosmer scored a run and knocked in another and the Royals bested the San Diego Padres 4-1 on Tuesday. Royal’s starter Jeremy Guthrie scattered six hits over six innings of one-run ball. He struck out six while walking just one. The Royals will host the Los Angeles Dodgers today.

The Kansas City Royals released former Cardinal infielder Rafael Furcal on Tuesday. Furcal signed a minor league deal with the club on March 16. Furcal, a three-time All-Star, hit .264 with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012, his last full season in the majors.

The City of Salem baseball, softball and T-Ball sign-ups will be Thursday and Friday, April 2nd and 3rd from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. A signup will also be held Saturday morning April 4th from 9:00 to noon. All the signups will be held in the lobby of the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. Children ages 4 through 13 as of August 1st are eligible to play and the cost is $20 per child. Graveside services Arlyn George Daugherty of Salem, age 72, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Highpoint Cemetery in Montreal, Missouri. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Diana Jane Wallis of Salem, age 72, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.

A private service will be held a later date for Gary Dean Smith of Salem, age 65. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
