The Dent County Commission met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that materials would be added and grading done on Dent County Roads 2490, 5410, 5420 and 6350. Purcell stated brush would be cut on county roads 4122 and 4124. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Road 4330, while only grading would be done on county roads 3270, 3273 and 3275. Larson went on to say that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3290 and a man would be screening brown rock. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said he would be attending a First Responder/FirstNet Broadband Network meeting at the MRPC in St. James today. He also reported that a number of people have told him their Centurylink phone bills have been wrong when it came to 9-1-1 taxes and they have met with resistance in trying to get them changed. He reminds citizens to be firm in their conviction and ask to speak with a supervisor if you are not getting satisfaction. The number to call about changing the 9-1-1 charges is 1-866-579-7885. At the last meeting, Bill Urban with Advanced Electric and Dennis Medlock came to the commissioner meeting to discuss the backup generator. Urban recommended getting a 100 KW, 6 cylinder generator that has a 400 amp transfer switch along with other various electrical needs. The estimated cost would be between $70,000 and $72,000 which includes engineering costs. The county would be responsible for the concrete base. No decision was made and the commission did say that if they decided to move forward with a backup generator they would have to put it out for bids. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 10:55 Monday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about four miles south of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 74-year old David Southards of Salem was driving a 1999 International dump truck when he turned into the path of a 2013 International truck driven by 45-year old Randall Lea of Bunker. Lea suffered minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. They were both wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The 1999 International sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing. The 2013 International sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.

Projected low nighttime temperatures this week have delayed a project to replace the pavement along the eastbound lanes of I-44 between Route 63 and Vichy Road in Rolla. The work has been rescheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 6th. Once work begins, one eastbound lane of I-44 will be closed during the work. As part of the project, the off ramp from eastbound I-44 to Route 63 will be closed during the week of April 7th to allow crews to mill the pavement. The on ramp from Route E to eastbound I-44 will be closed from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. that week as well. Motorists can expect delays in the area. The contractor has until May 1st to complete the project. MoDot also announced that culvert pipe replacement will continue on Highway 19 between Route B and Route WW and on Route N between Highway 19 and the end of state maintenance through Thursday, April 10th. One lane will be open, and crews will flag traffic through the work areas. For more information about these projects, please call 1-888-275-6636.

The fascinating and often misunderstood world of bats will be celebrated on Saturday, April 5th at Onondaga Cave State Park near Leasburg. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the free festival will be held from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Activities for all ages will be featured throughout the festival. Kids will be able to enjoy bat-related crafts and activities and explore an inflatable cave. Visitors can enjoy discounted tours of Onondaga Cave and exhibits on cave gear, cave restoration, and bat preservation. From 11 a.m.-2 p.m., representatives from Incredible Bats will present live bat shows featuring African straw colored fruit bats. Between scheduled demonstrations, the fruit bats will be on display in the visitor center for all to observe. For more information about the event, contact the park at 573-245-6576. The City of Salem Spring Youth Soccer Program is just around the corner. This league is for all boys and girls that are currently age 4-12 years old. The final sign-ups will be held Thursday, April 3rd and Friday, April 4th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the front lobby of the Community Center @ the Armory. The Salem Tiger baseball team will be in Licking today to face the Wildcats at 4:30 in non-conference play. Salem is 0-3 on the year and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio 1340 AM and online at ksmoradio.com.

The Salem Tiger tennis team opened up their season on Monday with an 8-1 win over Richland. The tennis team will host a match in Salem at 4:00 this afternoon against Houston.

Salem Tiger golf and track will be in action today. Salem golf will host their Salem Open at 4:00 while Salem track will participate in a track meet in Cuba at 3:30 this afternoon.

Yadier Molina homered for the game's only run and Adam Wainwright fired seven splendid innings to help the St. Louis Cardinals begin defense of their National League pennant with a 1-0 victory at Great American Ball Park on Monday. Wainwright (1-0) held the Reds to three singles and racked up nine strikeouts while working around four walks for the Cardinals, who have the day off today.

Alex Gonzalez tied the game with an RBI triple in the seventh and then won it with a run-scoring single in the ninth, as the Detroit Tigers rallied for a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals on Opening Day at Comerica Park. Kansas City starter James Shields was charged for three runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings. Salvador Perez went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Royals, who also have the day off today.

In expected moves, the Kansas City Royals placed pitchers Luke Hochevar and Louis Coleman on the 15-day disabled list.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Philadelphia Flyers tonight at the Scottrade Center. The Blues are 50-17-7 and sit three points behind Boston for the most points in the NHL. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.

Memorial services for Paula Rae Borg of Salem, age 67, will be held at a later date at the St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Granite City, Illinois. Arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem.

There will be no services for Bonnie Jean Holland Rueter of Salem, age 92. Memorials may be made to the Backpack program at the Salem United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
