Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft of the cattle and are currently held in the Dent County jail pending warrants. Arrested were 25-year old Manu Teo of Waynesville and 30-year old Eric O’Connell of Iberia. They have been charged in connection with the cattle thefts from the Salem Livestock Barn. Both subjects are currently being held on a $50,000 Cash Only bond charged with seven felonies. The sheriff's office would like to thank the citizen's and surrounding law enforcement agencies that have helped with this investigation.
The City of Salem Board of Aldermen will hold their regular meeting tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the City Hall Council Chambers located at 202 North Washington. In a hearing of persons, AccuBak Data Systems wishes to discuss a new contract for tower rental. Their three-year contract that was signed on November 2nd, 2010 was breeched due to non-payment of the lease so the contract is null and void. The Board will then reviews bids that were received for the health and life insurance services and also the demolition and removal of the burned house located at 1201 South MacArthur Avenue. In unfinished business, the board will make the final determination of rent for the TCRC. At the February 4th meeting, the Council for Healthy Dent County presented their financial statement for July 2011 through June 2012 to see if they are financially stable to start paying rent on the building. City Administrator Clayton Lucas will then give his report. Aldermen Kenneth Nash, Hayden Powell, Philip Giacomelli, and Ryan Whitaker will discuss issues concerning the city. Mayor Gary Brown will then also give his report. In the introduction and reading of bills and resolutions, Bill No. 3269 will be introduced. This is an ordinance that is required in order to adopt the new City Code Book that was just codified for the City by Sullivan Publications. Resolutions 4-2013 and 5-2013 will also be introduced. Resolution 4-2013 is required in order to update the Employee Handbook with the recommendations that Lucas presented at the meeting to meet federal regulations. Resolution 5-2013 is required to authorize the Mayor to sign the close-out report for the Community Department of Economic Development Grant the city received for the storm water project at the Housing authority. Clayton Lucas will then present the Quarterly Financial Report to the Board. The Board will then go into closed session to discuss personnel and contracts. The meeting of the City of Salem Board of Aldermen is open to the public.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol has released their Dent County arrest reports for Thursday, March 28th. At 10:20 in the morning, 20-year old Jay Johnson of Salem was arrested on a felony Dent County warrant for possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond. At 2:50 in the afternoon, 19-year old Matthew Oppelt of Salem was arrested on a felony Dent County warrant for possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and held on bond. At 6:25 in the evening, 31-year old William Nash of Salem was arrested for felony driving while revoked, failure to display plates on a motor vehicle, and failure to display certificate of vehicle inspection. He was taken to the Dent County Jail and later released.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is hosting workshops across the state to educate citizens and communities about the value of their public trees. The workshop will provide useful information and tools for city and elected officials; public works, parks, and planning departments; local arborists; local and regional planners; tree boards; and anyone with an interest in community trees. Professional credits will be available. Topics will include information on the benefits of trees and tools for their effective care and management, measuring and understanding the economic value of trees, the value of a tree inventory, and trends in community forestry. The workshops will focus on the results of a unique series of tree assessments that took place over three decades in 44 Missouri cities, and will also reveal trends in the attitudes and opinions of municipal officials and citizens about trees in their communities. Workshop presentations will include interactive audience polling where ideas and opinions will be part of the discussion. Participants will receive detailed information about new tools for managing community forests, and about engaging officials and citizens to develop sustainable forests where they live, work, and play. The workshop for our area will be in Rolla on April 15th from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Missouri University of Science and Technology Havener Center at 1346 Bishop Avenue. Jeremy Guthrie pitched four innings of one- run, six-hit baseball, as the Kansas City Royals defeated the Cleveland Indians, 5-1, in spring training action on Friday. The Royals will be in Chicago this afternoon to open up the regular season against the White Sox at 3:10.
