The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6245, and that two men would be working on cleaning out culverts and then possibly screening some gravel. Purcell stated that two other men would be doing some major service work on a grader. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that gravel is being hauled to a number of soft spots on various roads, and that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2030, 2055 and 4030. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that he attended the Central Region Workforce Investment Board meeting and said that the State Park Youth Corps still has openings for young people between the ages of 17 and 21. He said that Montauk State Park had a total of 21 jobs available and Dillard Mill had nine jobs available. He said young men and women interested in applying for those jobs should contact COPIC or go online to thinkoutsideMO.gov to find more information. He also said that legislation that would hold the Missouri Department of Conservation liable for damages caused by the re-introduction of elk is being debated in both Senate and House committees. He said people who feel strongly one way or the other about this legislation need to contact State Rep Jason Smith at 573-751-1688 or State Senator Dan Brown at 573-751-5713, and let them know their opinion on the subject. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that her office would be open for absentee voting Saturday from 8:00 AM until noon, and on Monday during normal business hours. She said the election Tuesday would be held from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. At the last meeting, the board approved the culvert bid from Viebrock Sales LLC of $17,105.92 with an option to go to 14 gauge instead of 16 gauge on the 42” by 29” culvert dimensions as that is MoDOT’s specifications. The next meeting of the Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

In closed session last Thursday, the Salem R-80 board of education voted to renew the teaching contracts of those who had not previously resigned or retired. Coaching contracts were also approved, including the approval of Philip Karr as the Tiger’s head baseball coach for the 2011-2012 school year. Karr is currently the assistant baseball coach and he will be replacing Don Smith, who is retiring at the end of the current school year. Karr was also rehired to be the Lady Tiger’s head basketball coach and assistant football coach. The unanimous rehires were Bill Schuchardt as football coach, athletic director and track coach; Terrie Welch in track; Clay Moody for golf; William Hubbs for tennis; Brian McMamee and Jeff Schchardt as assistant football and track coaches; David Beeson as the assistant girls basketball; Tammy Davison as the assistant softball coach; and Tony Edwards as an assistant baseball coach. Salem basketball coach Nic Zenker, Lady Tiger volleyball coach Diane Bermudez, assistant volleyball coach Jamie Chilton, as well as head softball coach and boys junior varsity basketball coach Carey Davison were all rehired. Jodie Heavin was also rehired as the cheerleader coach. The meeting was then adjourned.

An accident happened in Dent County on Highway 19 about nine miles south of Salem at 11:10 Thursday night. According to the highway patrol report, a 2000 BMW 528I driven southbound by Jerry Hurt of Salem, went off the right side of the roadway and struck two trees. Hurt suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by the Salem Memorial District Hospital ambulance. The BMW sustained extensive damage and was removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol recorded five traffic fatalities during the month of February. This is five more than in February of last year. The total fatalities for 2011 are six, compared to three for the same time period last year. In the month of February, Troop I had 161 accidents occur with 39 injuries compared to 187 accidents with 39 injuries a year ago. Reports from the individual counties show that in Crawford County, there were 18 accidents and two injuries reported, Dent County reported 13 accidents and no injuries, while Laclede County had 33 accidents and nine injuries. In Maries County, there were 11 accidents and three injuries, Phelps County had 54 accidents occur in their borders where 14 people were injured and two people died in February while Pulaski County had 32 accidents with 11 injuries and three fatalities.

The Potosi Trojans defeated the Salem Tigers baseball team yesterday by the score of 7-3. Salem is now 3-2 on the year and they will host the West Plains Zizzers today at 4:30. The FINAL City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball-Softball-T-Ball sign-ups will be held today in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center on West Rolla Road from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. This league is for ALL boys and girls who are 4-14 years of age as of May 1, 2011. The cost is $20 per child. For more information, contact Parks & Recreation Director Greg Nash at 729-6290.

Cameron Maybin finished 2-for-5 with a solo homer in his first game as a Padre, and helped San Diego pull ahead in the 11th inning for a 5-3 victory over St. Louis on Opening Day. Cardinals’ starter Chris Carpenter pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on two hits and struck out four. Colby Rasmus finished 2-for-3 with a triple and run scored. The Cards will play the Padres this Saturday and Sunday on KSMO.

Torii Hunter and Jeff Mathis homered to back a shut-down start by Jered Weaver, and the Angels held on to beat the Royals, 4-2, in their season opener. Jeff Francoeur and Mike Aviles homered for the Royals, but Luke Hochevar (0-1) gave up four runs in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss. The Royals and Angels will play again tonight.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Calgary Flames tonight starting at 7:00. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

Funeral services for June L. Lewis of Salem, age 93, will be held today at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Salem Memorial Hospital, Palliative Care Rooms.

Funeral services for Bertie Albert of Ellington, age 76, will be held Saturday morning at 10:00 at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Ellington. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight. Interment will be in the Redford Memeorial Cemetery.

Funeral services for Lois June Day of Bunker, age 71, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem. Visitation will be from noon until time of service. Internment will be held in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Day family.

Funeral services for Rosella Skaggs of Berryman, age 101, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be from noon until service time. Interment will be in the Upper Indian Creek Cemetery.

There will be no services for Calvin Lee Brooks Jr. of Salem, age 61, per his wishes. Junior Brooks was cremated. All arrangements under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.
