Congratulations to these Salem High School Ag Education/FFA teams on their performance at the recent South Central District Contests.  Qualifying for the State Competition on April 14th & 15th was the 1st place Poultry Team which includes Tucker Conley, Eddie Fleetwood, Alex Marchbanks & Alyvia Toman; the 1st place Parliamentary Procedure Team comprised of Tucker Conley, Zeb Frazier, Jennifer Lundy, Samantha Riley, Chandra Sullins, Wes Tatom and Mackenzie Wulff; the 2nd place Farm Management Team that features Taylor Fry, Ashley Greenshields, Lane Howard & Smanatha Riley; the 4th place Horse Selection Team which includes Briatty Hilderbrand, Kaylin Inman & Luke Swiney; and the 7th place Dairy Cattle Team of Jennifer Lundy, Kris McCarter, Ryan Moreland and Sierra Hagler. Individual awards went to Alex Marchbanks as he took 1st place in Poultry, Lane Howard who captured 2nd place in Farm Management, Ashley Greenshields who took 3rd place in Farm Management and Kaylin Inman who captured 3rd place in Horse Selection.

The Dent County Fire Protection District released theirs reports for Wednesday, March 23rd. At 9:05 in the morning, a total of five firefighters responded to Highway 72 near Jadwin Lumber, but were cancelled en route. At 12:19 that afternoon, a total of three firefighters responded to Dent County Road 4155 for a forest, woods, or wildland fire. Fire lines were established and all units returned to the station at 12:30 p.m. At 1:50 that afternoon, four firefighters responded to Dent County Road 2090 for a brush or brush and grass fire. The fire was extinguished and all units returned to the station at 2:31 at which time a total of eight firefighters aided by the Jadwin Volunteer Fire Department responded to Dent County Road 3210 for a forest, woods, or wildland fire. The fire was extinguished and all units returned to the station at 3:55. At 3:28 that same afternoon eight firefighters responded to a Dent County Road 4280 for a forest, woods, or woodland fire with the aid of the Department of Conservation and U.S. Forest Service. The fire was extinguished and all units returned to the station at 4:27. Later that evening at 6:04, eight firefighters responded to East Pine Street for an outside rubbish fire. The fire was extinguished and all units returned to the station at 6:27. At 6:33 that evening, eight firefighters responded to Route P to assist the police. They provided equipment and were back at the station at 6:45. Later that night at 10:09, seven firefighters responded to Dent County Road 4280 for a forest, woods, or wildland fire. The fire was extinguished and all units returned to the station at 2:54 the next morning.

An accident occurred at 7:30 Monday night in Dent County on Route CC eight miles south of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol Report a 1993 Subaru driven by 28-year-old Matthew Thedford of Licking MO, was traveling south on Route CC. The accident occurred as the Subaru traveled off the right side of the roadway, struck a fence and overturned. Thedford suffered minor injuries and was taken to Salem Memorial District Hospital by private vehicle. Occupant of the vehicle 29-year-old Anthony Good of Licking suffered moderate injuries and was transported the Salem Memorial District Hospital by Salem EMS. Both were wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The Subaru was totaled and was left at the scene.

An accident occurred at 2:06 Tuesday afternoon in Pulaski County on I-44 westbound at the 161-mile marker in St. Robert. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet Impala driven by 58 year-old Vandie Hahn of Rolla skidded into the path of a 2006 Western Star driven 64 year-old James Ray of Salem causing contact to be made. The contact caused the Chevrolet Impala to go off the left side of the roadway, strike the median cables, overturn, and come to rest in the median. Hahn suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. The Chevrolet Impala was totaled in the accident and was removed from the scene by Rothmund’s Towing. The Western Star sustained minor injuries, but was driven from the scene.

The Salem Baseball Tigers will be at Potosi today to face the Trojans at 4:30, weather permitting. Salem enters the game with a 3-1 record. You can hear the game only on ksmoradio.com until the Cardinal’s game is completed.

The Salem Tennis Team is scheduled to host Willow Springs today at 4:00 at the Salem City Park while the Salem Track Team will host an open meet today at 4:00 at the Salem Track.

The FINAL City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball-Softball-T-Ball sign-ups will be held  today and tomorrow in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center on West Rolla Road from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. This league is for ALL boys and girls who are 4-14 years of age as of May 1, 2011. The cost is $20 per child. For more information, contact Parks & Recreation Director Greg Nash at 729-6290.

Chris Porter scored two goals and dished out an assist, as the St. Louis Blues annihilated the Detroit Red Wings, 10-3, at Joe Louis Arena. Chris Stewart and Vladimir Sobotka each had a goal and two assists for the Blues, who have won three of four. Patrik Berglund, B.J. Crombeen, Matt D'Agostini, Roman Polak and Cam Janssen all registered a goal and an assist. Jaroslav Halak made 41 saves for the victors. The Blues will host the Calgary Flames Friday night at 7:00.

The St. Louis Cardinals open their 2011 season today against the San Diego Padres. Game time is set for 3:10, but the pre-game festivities get underway at 1:50 on KSMO Radio.

The Kansas City Royals will open their season against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starting at 3:10 this afternoon.

Funeral services for Hazel P. Bogle of Owensville formerly of Salem, age 89, will be held today at 11:00 at the Morton Chapel in Linn. Interment will be in the Lane Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Bogle family. 

Funeral services for Jewel (J.D.) Sapaugh of Salem, age 69, will be held today at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for June L. Lewis of Salem, age 93, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Salem Memorial Hospital, Palliative Care Rooms.

Funeral services for Lois June Day of Bunker, age 71, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem. Visitation will be from noon until time of service. Internment will be held in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Day family.
