An accident occurred at 4:15 Friday morning in Dent County on Highway 19 about 14 miles north of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 34-year old Justin Chandler of Salem was traveling northbound on Highway 19 when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway. Chandler overcorrected and the Cavalier overturned in the ditch. Chandler suffered moderate injuries and was taken by Salem EMS to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Chandler was then arrested and charged with a DWI for drugs, felony possession of a controlled substance, felony for the possession of chemicals with the intent to manufacture methamphetamines, a felony for possession of precursers to methamphetamines, a felony for the unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor for the unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, a ticket for careless and imprudent driving, a ticket for not having insurance and a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt. He was later released. The Chevrolet sustained extensive damage and was towed by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

An accident happened at 1:20 Sunday morning in Phelps County on Route T in Newburg. According to the highway patrol report, a 2008 Pontiac G6 driven southbound by 21-year old Tristan Affolter of Doolittle, lost control of the car and it went off the right side of the roadway. Affolter overcorrected and the Pontiac struck a bridge. Affolter and a passenger in the Pontiac, 29-year old Ronald Conaway of Rolla, suffered serious injuries and were taken by the Phelps County Ambulance to the Phelps County Regional Medical Center. No one was wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. The driver, Tristan Affolter, was arrested and charged with a felony for assault in the 2nd degree, driving while having his licensed revoked and not wearing a seatbelt. He was later released from the hospital. The Pontiac was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by C&C Towing.

The Salem Police Department released reports involving an assault, a shoplifter, a domestic disturbance and theft from a vehicle. On Saturday, March 14th at 12:15 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to the Salem Treatment Center located at 203 North Grand in reference to an assault. The investigation of the report revealed that a 27-year old male of Sullivan, had assaulted a 25-year old female of Sullivan. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court for assault and released. On Monday, March 16th at 1:33 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to Country Mart in reference to a shoplifter. The investigation of the report revealed that a 53-year old female of Salem took merchandise valued at $47.34 and left the store without paying. Further investigation led to the arrest of the suspect who was issued a summons to appear in court and was released.  That evening at 6:35, an officer located a 30-year old female of Union, Missouri near Franklin and Missouri Highway 19 who had an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem and Houston, Missouri. She was taken into custody on the warrants and incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Tuesday, March 17th at 1:10 in the afternoon, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 1400 block of South Hickory in reference to a domestic disturbance. That investigation led to the arrest of a 31-year old female and a 33-year old male, both of Salem, on active arrest warrants from Phelps County.  The male suspect was also found to be in possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Both were incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Wednesday, March 18th at 3:52 p.m. an officer was detailed to Auto Connection located on Highway 32 in reference to a theft from a customers vehicle. The investigation of the report revealed that a person or persons unknown took a tailgate valued at $250 from a black 2001 Ford truck. Anyone with any information regarding an investigation ongoing or previously mentioned is asked to contact the Salem Police Department at 729-4242.

Come to the Bonebrake Center of Nature and History TONIGHT at 6:30 p.m. to experience views of the solar system and the galaxy. Joe Shuster and friends will be on site using powerful telescopes to show the mountains, plains, and craters on the Moon. They will point out the planets Mars and Venus in the western sky at the beginning of the event. Later, Jupiter will be visible, and they will show cloud bands on the biggest planet in our solar system. Participants will also be able to view four of Jupiter's moons, and late in the event watch the shadow of one of the moons drift along Jupiter's clouds. There should be a chance to take a close look at some interesting double stars, too. With some luck, there might be a meteor or a satellite, too. So bundle up, and come enjoy the views through the telescopes and experience a tour of the sky. All are welcome to bring personal binoculars or telescopes as well. This program is appropriate for the whole family and will be mostly outdoors, so come prepared for the night air. There will be access to the house and light refreshments.  The suggested donation is $1.00 per person or $5.00 for the whole family. The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association of Missouri has released their All-State teams for the 2014-2015 year. Although Salem did not place anyone on the teams, Missouri basketball coaches honored several area athletes for their outstanding play this season. For the ladies, Bunker High School junior Jacey Scaggs was selected to the All-State team and was also named the Class 1 “Player of the Year.” In Class 3, senior Bailee Osborne of Licking and senior Ashley Marlatt of St. James were named to the All-State teams. Named to the All-State Class 3 Academic Team from Licking was Megan Smith. For the boys, the Rolla Bulldogs placed two on the All-State Class 4 team with senior Caleb Copeland and junior Kobe Wands. Senior Lance Duncan from the Licking Wildcats was named to the Class 3 All-State team. Congratulations to all these athletes on a fine season!!!!

The Salem Tigers Baseball Tigers won their first game of the year Friday beating Cuba, 8-3. Tristan Dubois went 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI while Jon Arzt, Cody Manthey and Paul McClain each had two hits for the Tigers who are now 1-2 on the year. Salem did not play Licking Saturday due to the weather and will play the Wildcats in a double-header Tuesday at the SHS Field with the first game starting at 4:30.

The Salem Tigers Tennis Team will have their first match of the season today at Richland starting at 4:00.

Boone Jenner scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and the Blue Jackets went on to beat the St. Louis Blues 4-2 on Saturday night. Brian Elliott gave up three goals on 16 shots for the Blues, who returned to Scottrade Center following a 3-1-2 road trip. Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Tarasenko each scored for the Blues who will host the Vancouver Canucks tonight at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

Dillon Gee turned in seven strong innings to help the New York Mets to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Grapefruit League action. Marco Gonzales worked the first 4 2/3 innings for St. Louis, with the young lefty yielding just one run on three hits. Jason Heyward finished 2-for-3 with an RBI triple to pace the Cardinals offensively. The Cards will play Washington today.

Edinson Volquez had his best start in three weeks, but it wasn't enough as the Chicago Cubs blasted the Kansas City Royals, 7-0. Volquez gave up two runs in six innings of work on seven hits, but the Royals could only muster three hits in the game. Kansas City will play Texas today.

The City of Salem baseball, softball and T-Ball sign-ups will be Thursday and Friday, April 2nd and 3rd from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. A signup will also be held Saturday morning April 4th from 9:00 to noon. All the signups will be held in the lobby of the Salem Community Center @ the Armory. Children ages 4 through 13 as of August 1st are eligible to play and the cost is $20 per child. Funeral services for Mrs. Velma Hardester of Lenox, age 60, will be this morning at 11:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Funeral services for Ruth D. (Lowe) Reynolds of Rolla, age 75, will be held today at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery.

Graveside services Arlyn George Daugherty of Salem, age 72, will be held Wednesday at 11:00 at the Highpoint Cemetery in Montreal, Missouri. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for Diana Jane Wallis of Salem, age 72, will be held Thursday at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery.
