Attorney General Chris Koster reports that William Benedict of Bunker, has pleaded guilty to murder in the second degree and armed criminal action in the shooting death of Roger McNail on May 10, 2011. The shooting occurred at the junction of Route B and Highway 72 in Reynolds County. According to police reports, the victim arrived at that location, where Benedict was sitting on the hood of his truck, threatening suicide. When McNail tried to calm him down, Benedict jumped on the victim’s truck and then shot him. McNail died at the scene. Benedict’s sentencing is set for May 21 in Iron County, where the case was moved on a change of venue.  Benedict faces 25 years on each count. The Attorney General’s Office assisted Reynolds County Prosecuting Attorney Bob Johnson on the case.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Thursday morning at the courthouse. Dent County Sheriff Rick Stallings was in attendance to update the Commission on a grant that the Sheriff’s Department received for $109,012.78 for the new frequency of a narrow band system that would supply a better and more secure channel for emergency personnel. In road reports, District One Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5080, 5085, 6303, 6305, 6320, 6495 and 6505. He stated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6505 and two trucks would be hauling brown rock. District Two Commissioner Gary Larson reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 4290 and 4310, materials would be hauled and grading would also be done on county road 2150. He stated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2250 and work would be performed in the shop on a sand screen. Larson said that he attended the Extension Council meeting and a Community Center Committee meeting this week. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that Rep. Don Wells called to let him know that the House passed Bill #1373 that would amend county budgets and the bill will now pass on to the Senate. Skiles also wanted to remind everyone that a FREE tire recycling would take place Saturday, March 31st from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Rolla Recycling Center located on Old St. James Road in Rolla. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind voters that her office will be open Saturday, March 31st from 8:00 until noon for absentee voting and Monday, April 2nd is the last day to vote absentee. Polls will be open on Tuesday, April 3rd from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm, ID will be required for voters at the polls and if anyone has had a name or address change be sure and stop by the Dent County Clerk’s office or call 729-4144. Curley also updated the Commission on the new districting that she received as of March 13, 2012. The 16th Senate District encompasses the counties of Dent, Phelps, Crawford, Pulaski and Camden County, while the 143rd House District consists of Dent, Shannon, Oregon and a part of Reynolds County. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday, April 2nd at the Dent County Courthouse starting at 9:00 and that meeting is open to the public.

A number of Salem High School Choir members received a 1 (Superior) rating, and will be advancing to State Music Festival in Columbia, Mo., on April 26-27. Four soloists & two small ensembles qualified for the State Music Festival. The four soloists are Joseph Jackson, Sarah Watts, Adam Wood and Cassidy Wood. The mixed quartet comprised of Mitch Lo, Sarah Watts, Adam Wood, Cassidy Wood also qualified, as did the Girls Double Quartet of Haley Cason, Ashley Crocker, Tori Douglas, Breann Lowrance, Joy Malott, Brittany Rowan, Sarah Watts and Cassidy Wood. Congratulations to these students on their outstanding achievement!

An accident occurred on Saturday, March 24th at 9:24 in the evening at the intersection of Roosevelt and Doss Road. According to the Salem Police report, a 2002 Dodge Journey driven by Jannette Pickett of Salem was stopped at the stop sign northbound on Doss Road. A 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Kasey Wainwright and owned by Barry Wainwright, both of Salem was stopped at the stop sign eastbound on Roosevelt. The Chevrolet started traveling east and the Dodge started moving north and failed to yield, making contact with the Chevrolet. No injuries were reported. Both vehicles sustained moderate damage.

Brady Floyd, Andrew Conaway, and Jake Arzt each had three hits to lead the Salem Tigers past the Potosi Trojans Thursday, 6-4. Lane Stluka had two RBI for Salem who has won two straight games. Skyler Johnson pitched 5 2/3rds innings to get the win while Jake Conway got the save. Salem is now 4-2 and they will begin SCA play on Monday when they host the Ava Bears starting at 4:30.

Dave Bolland supplied the lone goal in the fourth round of the shootout, as the Chicago Blackhawks overcame blowing a two-goal lead in the third period to edge the St. Louis Blues, 4-3, at the United Center. St. Louis tied the game on goals from Jason Arnott and David Perron. The point earned in the shootout gives the Blues 106, one more than the New York Rangers in the race for the Presidents' Trophy. The Blues host the Blue Jackets Saturday night at 7:00 and you can hear it on KSMO.

Daniel Pertusati smacked a solo home run as the Miami Marlins downed the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-1, in Grapefruit League action. Carlos Beltran's solo shot accounted for the Cardinals' offense. Lance Lynn gave up one run on five hits and a walk in a five-inning start. The Cardinals play the New York Mets this afternoon at 12:05. You can hear the Cards Saturday and Sunday games on KSMO Radio at 11:45.

Albert Pujols finished 4-for-4 with three runs batted in as the Angels bested the Royals, 11-8, in Cactus League action. Everett Teaford also gave up three home runs in his start while scattering nine hits and five runs (four earned). Jeff Francoeur, Yuniesky Betancourt, and Eric Hosmer blasted homers in defeat. The Royals play the White Sox tonight.

Funeral services for Kurtis Terrill Lambiel of Rolla, age 77, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the First Assembly of God Church in Rolla. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in Rolla with a Masonic service at 7:00. Interment will be in the Ozark Hills Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Memorials may be made to the Missouri Veterans Home.

Funeral services for Jessie Stella (Jackie) Hutson of Salem, age 101, will be Saturday at 3:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be tonight from 5:00 to 7:00. Interment will be in the Freeman Cemetery in Cherryville. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to the Meals on Wheels or the Senior Center, both of Salem.

Mrs. Virginia Lorine Shelton passed away March 28th in Salem. Miss Shelton was cremated and there will be a Memorial Service at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary in Salem.

Funeral services for Ruth Marie Shuey of St. James, age 84, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the St. James Chapel of James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 11:00 until the service time at 2:00. Internment will be in the St. James Cemetery in St. James, MO.

Funeral services for Reba Lorene Bingham of Edgar Springs, age 84, will be Wednesday at 11:00 at the Anutt Community Church. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10:00 until 11:00. Internment will be in the Anutt Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Anutt Community Church.
