Ryan Smith allowed one hit in 5 1/3 innings of work plus went 2-2 and scored three times to help Salem beat Licking Tuesday in a rain soaked game, 8-4 in six innings. Austin Bettigrew also had two hits and scored twice for Salem who improved to 3-1 on the year. They will be at Potosi Thursday afternoon.
Salem Golf won it's first match of the year, in a rain soaked 9 hole meet in Salem on Tuesday. Salem shot a team total of 193. Individual Scores for Salem include Ben Adams with a 43, Connor Stroburg shot a 47, Adam Wood finished with a 51 and Dylan Sisco ended up with a 52, and Alan Benowitz shot a 53 which did not count toward the team total. The next match will be at Willow Springs next Tuesday.
Aaron Matthews' sacrifice fly highlighted a three-run eighth inning as the Marlins doubled up the Cardinals, 4-2, in Grapefruit League play. Colby Rasmus belted a solo homer in the first inning, while Tyler Henley's sacrifice fly in the eighth accounted for St. Louis' other run. Cardinal’s starter Jaime Garcia went six innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven. The Cards open the regular season Thursday afternoon.
Brayan Pena belted a two-run homer in the second inning as the Royals topped the White Sox, 3-2, in Cactus League play. Jeff Francoeur added a sacrifice fly later in the second, while starter Bruce Chen went five innings, allowing one run on four hits and struck out four. The Royals open the regular season Thursday.
The Texas Rangers dealt catcher Matt Treanor to the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations on Monday. The 35-year-old journeyman backstop hit .211 with five home runs and 21 RBI in 82 games for the AL champions in 2010.
Mikko Koivu was credited with the deciding goal in the shootout as the Minnesota Wild beat the Blues, 3-2 at Scottrade Center. Chris Stewart posted both tallies for the Blues. Jaroslav Halak made 26 stops but lost after yielding two goals on three tries in the shootout. The Blues will be in Detroit tonight starting at 6:30 and you can hear the game on KSMO.
