The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse Monday morning. In the road report, First District Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 5530 and 6633 while rock will be added to Dent County Road 6380 before it is graded. He also said that a number of chip and seal roads would be patched. Second District Commissioner Gary Larson said that rock was going to be added and grading was going to be done on Dent County Roads 3020, 3250 and 3260. He said that grading would also be done on Dent County Roads 2135, 3270 and 3273. He went on to mention that rock would be added to Dent County Road 2120. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that he met last week concerning the formation of the MRPC Foundation. He said that the committee will work on the structure and how the foundation should be set up before coming to the full Meramec Regional Planning Commission with a recommendation. He said that he would be attending a Meramec Community Enhancement Corporation meeting today and would be going to Springfield Wednesday morning at 11:00 to attend a meeting on the health insurance consortium. Deloris Gray Wood attended the meeting to let the commissioners know that the actual anniversary of the opening of the courthouse is today, and that the celebration has been set for April 25^th from 2:00 to 4:00 at the courthouse. She said that she could not get the Missouri Governor or Lieutenant Governor to attend the ceremony, so she is working on trying to get JoAnn Emerson. If that does not materialize, she may ask some local dignitaries to speak at the event. She is anticipating that both Senator Frank Barnitz and Representative Jason Smith will be able to attend where they could present proclamations honoring the event. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley wanted to remind everyone that the last day to request an absentee ballot by mail will be Wednesday. She also said that the courthouse would be open this Saturday from 8:00 until noon for absentee voting, and Monday, April 5^th, will be the last day to vote absentee in the Municipal election. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

Captain Lee Ann Kenley, commanding officer of Troop I, announces the results of two special enforcement projects conducted by Troop I officers during the month of March.  On Friday, March 5^th a hazardous moving enforcement operation was conducted in Crawford County.  During the operation two assigned troopers stopped 45 vehicles, 15 citations. There were 12 citations for speeding, two seat belt violations and one driver’s license violation. There were also 21 warnings issued. On Friday, March 12^th, a DWI saturation was conducted in Pulaski County.  Four troopers were assigned to the operation, which began at 7:00 p.m. and ended the next morning at 3:00 a.m. There were 14 citations issued. There were four DWI citations, three speeding citations, one seat belt violation, one stop sign violation, one violation for following to closely, one hazardous moving violation and three driver’s license violations. There were 18 warnings issued, and two traffic crashes were investigated.

Salem High School instrumental and vocal music students attended the annual Central District Music Festival held on the campus of East Central College in Union.  Receiving a 1 superior rating and advancing to state competition were:  Alex Bay with a vocal solo; Amber Blaylock with a clarinet solo; Shawn Bolerjack with a tuba solo; the girls' double quartet composed of Rachel Arts, Hanna Bostic, Alexa Bragg, Amy Huitt, Houlie Ibrahim, Natasha Krueger, Kim Marino and Sarah Medley, and the mixed quartet consisting of Houlie Ibrahim, Mitchell Lo, Colton Malott and Kim Marino. The State music festival will be held April 30 on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia.

The Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District recently announced the theme for its 2010 poster and trash art contest, “Be Green! Keep the Planet Clean.” This is the eighteenth year that Ozark Rivers has sponsored the contest. Students attending public and private schools in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski or Washington counties are eligible to participate. Home-schooled students in the seven-county area are also encouraged to participate. Deadline for entries is April 2, 2010. The poster contest is open to all K-12 students and should focus on the beneficial long-term results of recycling, ways to protect and enhance the environment and how our actions today impact our planet and future. Trash art projects do not have to adhere to the theme but should convey an Earth Day-type message. Posters and trash art entries will be judged separately, and students can participate in both the poster and trash art contest, if they choose. First place prizes are $50 U.S. savings bonds; second place prizes will be earth friendly gifts valued at $15 or more. Every student that participates will receive a small prize. These poster and trash art contests are a part of the district's effort to increase awareness of the solid waste problem and to generate interest in reducing the amount of waste deposited in area landfills. Contest winners will be notified the week of April 12, and the winning posters and artwork will be part of an exhibit at the Missouri University of Science and Technology during its Earth Day celebration on April 22. The Business Expo will be held on Saturday, April 10^th at the Salem Senior High School Gymnasium from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
