The public is invited to attend the Candidates Forum, presented by the Salem Area Community Betterment Association, The Salem News and KSMO Radio tonight at the Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center located at 202 South Main Street in Salem beginning at 6:30 pm. The forum will feature candidates Phillip Giacomelli and Mike Godi, running for the West Ward Aldermanic seat in the City of Salem municipal election, to the held on Tuesday, April 5th. If you are unable to attend the forum, the event will be carried live on the KSMO Radio website at www.ksmorado.com and it will be replayed Wednesday on KSMO Radio AM 1340 after Open Market at about 2:30. The program will also be archived on our website in our “streaming” area in case you missed the program where you can play it back anytime.

The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the courthouse. Sarah Massengale from the Dent County Extension wanted to inform the commissioners of a Fundamentals of Economic Development Workshop that is going to be held on Thursday, May 5th at the Bank of Salem Courtesy Room from 10:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon. This program is for elected officials and volunteer leaders interested in economic development. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that patch grading was going to be done on Dent County Road 6020, and brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 6240. He said that some workers would be replacing signs and another man went to Springfield to get oil for the durapatcher to repair chip and seal roads. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that workers are still checking for possible washouts, replacing downed signs, and cutting brush on Dent County Roads 2030 and 4040. He also said that brushes have been added to a truck to sweep the gravel off the chip and seal roads. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the he would be attending a Central Region Workforce Investment Board Caucus on Wednesday in Jefferson City. The commission also set their quarterly meeting date for Monday, April 18th from 6:00 at the Judicial Building. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that Wednesday would be the last day they can mail out an absentee ballot. She stated that her office would be open Saturday from 8:00 until noon for absentee voting, and the last day to vote absentee would be Monday, April 4th. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be held Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

An accident occurred at 2:23 Saturday afternoon in Crawford County on Highway 8 about twelve miles east of Steelville. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Volkswagen Jetta driven by 36 year-old Jeffrey Light of Salem lost control on the icy road, ran off the left side of the roadway, and struck a culvert and mailbox. Jeffrey Light and his family all suffered minor injuries including his wife, 30 year-old Tia Light; and children, 12 year-old Austin Light, 11-year-old Johnathan Light and 3- year-old Brandon Light. They were taken by ambulance to the Potosi Hospital. They were all wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Volkswagen Jetta sustained moderate damages and was left at the scene.

An accident occurred at 2:15 Friday afternoon in Dent County on Route F about five miles south of Salem. According to the Highway Patrol Report, a 1991 Ford F-250 driven by 36-year-old Charles Johns of Salem was traveling south on Route F. The accident occurred as the Ford traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck an embankment. Johns suffered serious injuries and was transported to Salem Memorial Hospital by Salem Ambulance. Johns was not wearing a safety restraint at the time of the accident. The Ford was totaled and removed from the scene by Whitakers Towing.

An accident happened at 7:00 pm Sunday, March 27th in Dent County on Route O about one-tenth of a mile north of Anutt. According to the highway patrol report, a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by 58-year old Robin Reeves of Edgar Springs was traveling south on Route O. Reeves attempted to avoid a deer that was standing in the roadway and the Hyundai traveled off the right side of the road, struck an embankment and overturned. Reeves suffered minor injuries and was taken to the Phelps County Regional Medical by the Salem ambulance. She was wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Hyundai was totaled in the accident and removed from the scene by Whitaker’s Towing of Salem.

The Salem R-80 Administration will be holding a 5-year planning meeting tonight at 7:00 at the Salem Junior High Library. All stakeholders of the Salem R-80 district will have an opportunity to share ideas about what the district should look like in the future. Everyone is welcome.

The Salem Baseball Tigers are scheduled to host Licking this afternoon at 4:30. If played, you can hear the game on KSMO Radio and online at ksmoradio.com. Salem is 2-1 on the year.

The Salem Golf Team will host the Salem Open today, weather permitting, at 4:00 at the Spring Creek Golf Club. The Salem Track Teams are scheduled to be at Cuba today starting at 3:30, while the Salem Tennis team is scheduled to open their season today at Houston starting at 4:00.

The St. Louis Cardinals game with their Springfield affiliate scheduled for tonight has been cancelled due to wet conditions.

John Buck had a two-run double as part of a four-run third inning, as the Florida Marlins earned a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Grapefruit League action. Tyler Henley accounted for the only St. Louis offense with a run-scoring single. Jake Westbrook was tagged with the loss for yielding four runs on 11 hits with a pair of walks over 4 1/3 frames.

Starting pitcher Kyle Davies worked six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six, as the Kansas City Royals downed the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-0, in spring training. The Royals collected 17 hits including home runs from Kila Ka'aihue, Alex Gordon, Alcides Escobar and Jeff Francoeur.

The St. Louis Blues will host Minnesota tonight starting at 7:00 and you can hear the game on KSMO Radio.

The FINAL City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball- Softball-T-Ball sign-ups will be held on Thursday, March 31st and Friday, April 1st in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center located on West Rolla Road from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. This league is for ALL boys and girls who are 4 - 14 years of age as of May 1, 2011. The cost is $20 per child. For more information, contact Parks & Recreation Director Greg Nash at 729-6290.

Funeral services for Hazel P. Bogle of Owensville formerly of Salem, age 89, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Morton Chapel in Linn. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Lane Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Bogle family. 

Funeral services for Jewel (J.D.) Sapaugh of Salem, age 69, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the North Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services for June L. Lewis of Salem, age 93, will be held Friday at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Salem Memorial Hospital, Palliative Care Rooms.

Funeral services for Carol Elliott of Salem, age 80, will be held at a later date. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
