The Dent County Commissioners met for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson was not present due to a death in the family. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2460, 5060, 5110 and 5380. He said work crews were working on dump truck #119 and also doing hose repairs and doing routine service work on the Durapatcher. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles gave the District 2 report and stated grading would be done on Dent County Roads 3200 and 4330 while materials would be added and grading done on county roads 2030 and 2055. Skiles indicated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 3290 and a man would be screening brown gravel. Skiles then reported the Meramec Regional Planning Commission is taking applications for persons who would like to be a grant administrator. If anyone is interested in the position, please call the MRPC at 573-265-2993. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley is reminding citizens the last day they can mail out a ballot is Wednesday, April 2nd. The courthouse will be open for absentee voting from 8:00 AM until noon on Saturday, April 5th, and absentee voting will continue through April 7th at the Dent County Clerk’s office in the courthouse. At 10:00, the commissioners opened bids for a single coat chip and seal for Dent County Roads. The commission received bids from Blevins Asphalt from Mount Vernon and from N.B. West of Sullivan. Both bids came in at $1.80 per square yard. No decision was made at the meeting. The commissioners also opened bids for a tractor and brush cutter. The commission received bids from John Deere dealer William Nobbe and Company of Ste. Genevieve, New Holland dealer S & H Farm Supply of Rogersville, Kubota dealer Schaeperkotter Sales and Service of Owensville, and John Deere dealer Donald Farm and Lawn, Inc. of Rolla. The commission will review and compare the bids to make sure that all bids specs have been met before making a decision. At the last meeting, the commissioners voted unanimously to allow the Current River Cruisers to use the courthouse square on June 14th for the annual car show. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the Dent County Courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Art Across the Ages Exhibit currently on display at the Ozark Natural & Cultural Resources Center has been extended. It will now be open through Friday, April 4th from 9-5 during weekdays and will be open this Saturday only, March 29th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is an exceptional display of art creations from school age children and adults.  It is worth your time to see some of the talent that is in our community. The ONCRC is located at 202 S. Main in Salem. There is no charge for viewing the exhibit.

An accident happened at 11:14 Wednesday night in Dent County on Highway 72 and Route UU about a mile north of Bunker. According to the highway patrol report, a 1999 Dodge Stratus driven westbound by 18-year old Christopher Callahan of Bunker, pulled into the path of a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix driven southbound on Highway 72 by 79-year old Hazel Harper of Bunker. Harper suffered minor injuries and was transported by the Salem Ambulance to the Salem Memorial District Hospital. Both persons were wearing seat restraints at the time of the accident. Both vehicles sustained moderate damages and were removed from the scene by the owner.

The Salem Upper Elementary will host a technology parent meeting with no children allowed on Tuesday, April 1st at 6:30 pm. This meeting is for R-80, R-4, R-2, and 4-H parents. Mrs. Schiffman from the St. Charles County Cyber Crime Unit and Wayne Becker from the Dent County Sheriff’s Office will present technology safety to the parents, regarding their children and safety on the Internet.

The Salem Tiger Baseball team was shut out in five innings Thursday at Houston by Mountain Grove, 10-0. Salem is now 0-3 on the year and they will be at Licking on Tuesday at 4:30.

The high school track meet scheduled for yesterday in Salem was postponed.

The City of Salem Spring Youth Soccer Program is just around the corner. This league is for all boys and girls that are currently age 4 – 12 years old. Spring Youth Soccer Sign-Ups will be held today from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at the Community Center @ the Armory located at 1200 West Rolla Road in Salem. Sign-Ups will also be held on Saturday, March 29th from 9:00 am to 12:00 (noon) in the front lobby of the Salem High School Gym. Final sign-ups will be held Thursday, April 3rd and Friday, April 4th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm in the front lobby of the Community Center @ the Armory. The cost is $20 per child and for more information contact City of Salem Parks & Recreation Director, Greg Nash at 729-6290.

T.J. Oshie's first career hat trick highlighted the St. Louis Blues' latest victory, a 5-1 drubbing of the slumping Minnesota Wild at Scottrade Center on Thursday. Jaden Schwartz and Brenden Morrow also tallied for the current Western Conference leaders, who improved to 11-2-1 since acquiring goaltender Ryan Miller from Buffalo on February 28th. Miller did his part as well in this one, taking a shutout bid into the final nine minutes and turning aside 27 of the 28 shots he faced. The Blues will host the Dallas Stars on Saturday and you can hear it on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.

Derek Dietrich stroked a two-run single to spark Miami's five-run eighth inning, as the Marlins secured a 6-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday in spring training action. St. Louis starter Michael Wacha surrendered just one run on five hits and a walk while striking out six over five frames. Daniel Descalso clubbed a run- scoring double in the setback. The Cardinals will wrap up Spring Training action tonight when they play their Triple-A affiliate Memphis Redbirds in Memphis. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting at 6:35. The Cardinals will open up their regular season schedule on Monday when they travel to Cincinnati to start a three game series with the Reds.

The Kansas City Royals had the day off yesterday but they will wrap up their Spring Training schedule when they play the Milwaukee Brewers tonight at 7:10 and Saturday at 1:10 at Miller Park. The Royals will then be in Detroit on Monday to play the Tigers to start the season.

Memorial service for Pamela Austin of Rolla, age 59, will be held at 11:00 this morning at the McSpadden Funeral Home in Bunker.

A “Celebration of Life” Memorial Service for Glendon Lee Gant of Bunker, age 82, will be held at First Baptist Church of Bunker on Saturday morning at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greeley Cemetery, the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department, or the Bunker Alumni Scholarship Fund, all at Bunker; to Southwest Baptist University in Salem, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral services for Roberta Marks of Salem, age 90, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 today. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Dent County Love Packs for kids.

Funeral services for Lela Mae Jacobs of Salem, age 77, will be Monday at 12:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Salem Chapel. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service.  Interment will be Monday at 3:00 in the Black River Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the SMDH Auxiliary.
