The deadline to apply for one of 5 available Mark Twain National Forest military veteran interships is Friday, March 28, 2014. Mark Twain National Forest has partnered with Mt. Adams Institute to offer military veterans five, one-time recreation internships during 2014. The program is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service. VetsWork AmeriCorps participants are temporarily placed at federal land management agencies, such as USDA’s Mark Twain National Forest, where they learn various career paths. The five, field-going Mark Twain National Forest VetsWork AmeriCorps military veteran field-going internships will be located at Ava, Doniphan, Potosi, and two positions will be in Rolla. Each selected intern will receive $12,100 living allowance for the 45-week internship. Upon successful completion of the internship, they will receive an additional $5,550 education stipend. The stipend may be used to repay qualified student loans or for further education at a higher learning accredited institution, vocational or trade schools. For those who qualify, there will be basic medical insurance for interns only. Qualified interns must be 21-35 years old and honorably discharged US military veterans. Selected interns will also qualify for other available federal jobs for 120 days after completing the internship. The internship begins April 7, 2014. The Salem Police Department has released their reports. On Wednesday, March 12th at 10:00 in the evening, an officer was detailed to the Phelps County Jail for an extradition. The officer transported a 54-year old Rolla male to the Dent County Jail in lieu of an active arrest warrant from the City of Salem. He was incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Thursday, March 13th at 6:01 in the evening, an officer was dispatched to Hickory and Highway 32 in reference to an intoxicated subject on a bicycle.  The investigation revealed that a 45-year old Salem male was creating a traffic hazard by riding in front of traffic and shouting obscenities. He was placed under arrest for disorderly conduct, issued a summons to appear in court, and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Friday, March 14th at 2:46 in the early morning, an officer made contact with a 31-year old Salem male in the 1100 block of South Macarthur who had an active arrest warrant from Dent County. He was taken into custody on the warrant and released to the Dent County Sheriff’s Office and incarcerated pending a court appearance. On Saturday, March 15th at 9:03 in the evening, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic checkpoint. That investigation led to the arrest of a 33-year old Salem male for an open container. He was issued a summons to appear in court and released. At 10:40 that night, an officer was detailed to a residence in the 200 block of South Warfel in reference to an intoxicated male creating a disturbance between two residences. The investigation led to the arrest of a 21-year old Salem male for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. He was issued summonses to appear in court and incarcerated on a 12-hour hold. On Tuesday, a Georgia man was arrested in Phelps County after a deputy found 300 pounds of marijuana hidden in his car. The incident occurred after a Phelps County Sheriff's deputy pulled over Brian Ackerman of Lake Park, Georgia for a traffic violation on Interstate 44. After getting consent for a search, the deputy found 300 pounds of marijuana hidden in the cargo. Ackerman was charged with first degree drug trafficking and is being held in the Phelps County Jail on $500,000 bond. Assisting the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department was the Rolla Police Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The Salem Tiger baseball team will be in Houston tonight to play Mountain Grove as part of the Houston Tournament. Salem is 0-2 on the year and first pitch is set for 6:00.

The Salem Tiger golf team will open their season up this afternoon, as they’ll have a golf meet in Mountain View at 4:00. The Salem track team will also be in action today. They will host a track meet at the Salem High School track at 4:30 this afternoon.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Minnesota Wild tonight at the Scottrade Center. The Blues are 49-16-7 on the year and have an NHL leading 105 points. You can hear the game on KSMO Radio starting with the pre-game show at 6:30.

Yadier Molina had two hits and drove in all three runs for the St. Louis Cardinals in their 3-2 triumph over the Washington Nationals in spring training action. The Cardinals will play the Miami Marlins this afternoon at 12:05.

Yonder Alonso went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the San Diego Padres' 9-5 win over the Kansas City Royals. James Shields was torched for seven runs on seven hits in four innings for Kansas City, which got solo home runs by Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez. The Royals have the day off today.

The St. Louis Rams have agreed to terms with free-agent defensive lineman Alex Carrington. Carrington spent his previous four NFL seasons with Buffalo and started the first three games of the 2013 campaign prior to landing on injured reserve with a torn quadriceps. The 26-year-old has amassed 53 tackles and four sacks over 44 career games, including nine starts.

Funeral services for Curtis Anderson of Cook Station, age 54, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials may be made to the Anderson Family.

Funeral services for Anita Kay Lynch of Rolla and formerly of Salem, age 40, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Green Tree Christian Church in Rolla. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Anita Lynch Memorial Fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla.

Funeral services for Shirley Mae Wells Dour of Salem, age 75, will be held today at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be from 11:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice.

A “Celebration of Life” Memorial Service for Glendon Lee Gant of Bunker, age 82, will be held at First Baptist Church of Bunker on Saturday morning at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greeley Cemetery, the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department, or the Bunker Alumni Scholarship Fund, all at Bunker; to Southwest Baptist University in Salem, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral services for Roberta Marks of Salem, age 90, will be held Saturday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 Friday. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
