The Dent County Commissioners met Monday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5130, 5150, 6220 and 6280 while brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 6490 and 6493. Purcell stated that repairs were going to be made to the temporary bridge crossing over Sinkin Creek on Dent County Road 5680 that was washed out about two weeks ago. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that materials would be added and grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2110, 2115, 2250, 4040 and 4433 while brush would be cut on Dent County Road 2590. He stated that brown rock was also going to be screened. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that a meeting would be held tonight in Viburnum at the Fire Department Training Center by the EPA on the Viburnum Trend Haul Roads site and the alternatives to be taken. The meeting would be held from 6:30 until 8:00. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the last day to mail out a ballot would be Wednesday, and the last day to vote absentee would be Monday. She did say that her office would be open this Saturday from 8:00 AM until noon for absentee voting. Jack R. Edwards came in and said that he had heard rumors that Dent County Road 4055 was going to be widened and Commissioner Larson replied that was not going to happen as the county does not have a 30-foot easement on that road. At 10:00, Recorder Cindy Ard brought in two bids for new software for her office. The first bid was from Mobilis Technology that has a representative in Marshfield for $20,000 with maintenance after the first year of $3,600. They offered a lease purchase agreement with no interest. The other bid was from Computer Software Associates from a different state for $20,188 with maintenance after the first year of $2,946. They also offered a lease purchase agreement, but there would be an interest charge. Ard recommended the Mobilis system and the commission agreed to allow her to work out the details with Mobilis and bring the agreement back to the commission. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners would be held Thursday morning at 9:00 and the meeting would be open to the public.

A Candidates Forum sponsored by KSMO Radio, the Salem News and the Salem Area Community Betterment Association will be held tonight at the Salem Ozark Natural and Cultural Resource Center at 202 South Main Street starting at 6:30. The public forum will feature the candidates for Mayor, as well as the East and West Aldermanic seats. Invited to participate are candidates for Mayor Susan Smith and Gary Brown, candidates for East Ward Alderman Jerry Randell and Vicky Humphrey, and candidates for West Ward Aldermen Kenny Nash, Bill Riley and Randy Atchley. Questions for the candidates will come from the audience. The forum will be aired on KSMO Radio Wednesday afternoon starting at 2:30 following the Open Market.

An accident occurred at 3:45 Monday afternoon in Phelps County on Highway 8 about two miles south of St. James that took the life of a Rolla man. According to the highway patrol report, 68-year old Wilson Woolsey of Rolla lost control of the 2002 Harley Davison that he was riding, causing it to run off the right side of the roadway and eject him. Woolsey was pronounced dead at 4:30 by Phelps County Coroner Larry Swinfard, and his body was then taken to the Phelps County morgue. He was wearing a safety device at the time of the accident. The Harley Davidson sustained moderate damage and was removed from the scene by Spurgeon’s Towing.

An accident occurred at 4:12 Sunday afternoon in Crawford County on Highway Y about half a mile south of Highway 8. According to the highway patrol report, a 2007 Harley Davidson ridden by 49-year old Gary Brand of St. James traveled off the right side of the roadway after losing control and both occupants were ejected. Gary Brand and an occupant, 46-year old Verna Brand of St. James, suffered moderate injuries and were taken to the Washington County Hospital by ambulance. They were both wearing safety devices at the time of the accident. The motorcycle sustained minor damage and was ridden from the scene.

Ruben Tejada's two-run double highlighted a five-run seventh inning for the Mets, and New York earned a 6-3 decision over the St. Louis Cardinals in spring training action on Monday. Matt Holliday smacked an RBI single and Carlos Beltran finished with two hits and also scored a run for the Cardinals. Jake Westbrook took the loss, yielding three runs on four hits over 6 1/3 innings of work. The Cardinals have the day off today.

Pablo Sandoval crushed a game-winning two- run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the San Francisco Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals in Cactus League play on Monday. Humberto Quintero and Lorenzo Cain knocked in runs for the Royals and starter Luis Mendoza gave up just three hits over five scoreless frames while fanning four and walking two. The Royals play the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon at 3:05.

The St. Louis Blues will host the Nashville Predators tonight at 7:00. The Blues are 47-20-9 on the year and have a NHL best 103 points, two more than the Canucks and Rangers. You’ll be able to hear the game on KSMO Radio.
