William Lynch Elementary School will have kindergarten registration at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center today. Parents of kindergarten eligible students may call 729-6611 to make an appointment. Children must be 5 years of age before August 1st. Preschool screening will be held at the William Lynch on Tuesday, April 15th and Wednesday, April 16th. Interested parents may call 729-6611 to make an appointment. Children must be 3 or 4 years of age before August 1st. Those children age 4 before August 1st will get preference, and children age 3 may have to be put on a waiting list. The Kindergarten Open House will be held on Thursday, April 10th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Parents can schedule a tour when they register their child for kindergarten. 

A Novel Endophyte Tall Fescue Renovation School will be held on Tuesday, April 1st from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Wurdack Farm in Cook Station. Come learn the A-Z on why, when and how to kill toxic fescue and replace it with novel (livestock friendly) endophyte fescue. Toxic tall fescue causes more problems than FESCUE FOOT. Research studies show reduced weight gains, poor reproductive performance, rough hair coats, and diminished immune response due to impaired blood circulation caused by toxin in fescue pasture and hay. The Dent County Fire Protection District has released their reports. On Monday, March 10th and 10:11 in the morning, Dent County fire was paged to create a landing zone at the station. At 10:43 the scene was under control and a total of seven fire personnel responded to the call. That same morning at 10:22, seven firefighters responded to the 100 block of North Askins for a first responder call. Upon arrival the fire department assisted EMS. The scene was under control at 10:40. Later that day, eight firefighters responded to a brushfire call on Highway 68 North. Upon arrival the fire department found two acres on fire with one outbuilding in danger. The fire was then extinguished. Later that evening at 5:27, five firefighters responded to the 1000 block of South Jackson for a first responder call. Upon arrival, the fire department assisted EMS and the scene was under control at 5:46. Later that night, twelve firefighters responded to a brushfire on County Road 3300. The fire was under control at 11:36. On Wednesday, March 12th at 10:24 in the morning, seven firefighters responded to Highway 32 East for a first responder call. At 4:38 that afternoon, twelve firefighters were paged to a brushfire on County Road 3305. The fire was under control at 5:31. On Thursday, March 13th at 3:16 in the early morning, six firefighters responded to East Gibbs for an ambulance assist. Upon arrival, the fire department assisted EMS and the scene was under control at 3:44. At 5:02 that evening, ten firefighters were paged to create a landing zone at the station. The scene was under control a short time later that evening at 5:29.

Law enforcement conducted several checkpoints over the St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The Salem Police Department and Dent County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Missouri State Highway Patrol with a sobriety checkpoint in Dent County from 9:00 pm, Saturday, March 15th until 1:00 am, Sunday, March 16th, at the intersection of Missouri Highway 19 and 10th Street in Salem. A total of 29 arrests and 20 warnings were issued. There were three misdemeanor DWI arrests, one felony DWI arrest, 11 seat belt summons, one hazardous moving summons, two driving while suspended/driving while revoked summons, two misdemeanor drug arrests, and two misdemeanor warrant arrests. In Phelps County, a DWI saturation was conducted from 7:00 pm, Friday, March 14th until 3:00 am Saturday, March 15th. A total of 16 arrests and 53 warnings were issued. There were three misdemeanor DWI arrests, one speeding summons, seven seat belt summons, one child restraint summons, three hazardous moving summons, and one non-moving summons.

The Salem Tiger baseball team lost to Cuba on Tuesday, 12-1. The Tigers are 0-2 on the year and will play Mountain Grove on Thursday night at 6:00 at Houston.

David Backes notched the second hat trick of his career as the St. Louis Blues held off the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-3, on Tuesday. Alexander Steen and T.J. Oshie each posted a goal and two assists for the Blues, who have won two straight after dropping their previous two. Ryan Miller turned away 22 shots in the win. The win gives St. Louis 105 points on the season, one better than idle Boston for first overall in the NHL. The Blues will host the Minnesota Wild on Thursday.

Casey McGehee and Juan Diaz each homered to lead the Miami Marlins over the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-5, in Grapefruit League action at Roger Dean Stadium. Peter Bourjos ended 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for St. Louis. The Cardinals will play the Washington Nationals this afternoon at 12:05.

Stefen Romero hit a two-run homer and drove in three to help the Seattle Mariners post a 9-6 Cactus League win over the Kansas City Royals. Alex Gordon hit a solo home run and drove in three runs for the Royals, who will play the San Diego Padres this afternoon at 2:05.

Funeral services for Mildred Brown of Rolla, age 87, will be held this morning at 11:00 at the James & Gahr Mortuary Chapel in St. James. Memorials may be made to the Rolla Schools Back Pack Friday Program.

Funeral services for Curtis Anderson of Cook Station, age 54, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be today from 5:00 to 8:00 pm James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Memorials may be made to the Anderson Family.

Funeral services for Anita Kay Lynch of Rolla and formerly of Salem, age 40, will be held Thursday morning at 11:00 at the Green Tree Christian Church in Rolla. Visitation will be this evening from 5:00 to 8:00 at the Green Tree Christian Church. Interment will be in the Rolla City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Anita Lynch Memorial Fund. All arrangements are under the direction of the Null and Son Funeral Home in Rolla.

Funeral services for Shirley Mae Wells Dour of Salem, age 75, will be held Thursday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be Thursday from 11:00 until time of service at the Wilson Mortuary in Salem. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Phelps County Hospice.

A “Celebration of Life” Memorial Service for Glendon Lee Gant of Bunker, age 82, will be held at First Baptist Church of Bunker on Saturday morning at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greeley Cemetery, the Bunker Volunteer Fire Department, or the Bunker Alumni Scholarship Fund, all at Bunker; to Southwest Baptist University in Salem, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
