The Dent County Commissioners held their regular meeting Monday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in the first of four budgeted transfers of $9,750 to the Assessor’s Operations Fund from General Revenue. The commissioners signed off on the transfer. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Road 5615, and that repairs are being made to the Green-Hagler Bridge on Dent County Road 6080. Purcell indicated that culverts were being cleaned out on Dent County Road 4160 and that two men were checking for downed limbs on Dent County Road 6633 better known as the Ashley Creek Road. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson said that brush would be cut on Dent County Roads 2150, 2210 and 2330; and workers were putting up “weight limit” signs on Dent County Road 3290. Larson indicated that truck #70 was going to have the oil changed and be serviced, and workers were out checking for downed trees and clogged up pipes. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles reported that the commissioners attended the South Central County Commissioners Association meeting held Friday in Houston. He mentioned that a presentation was made by a group looking to create a statewide insurance consortium for county governments. Skiles said that he was elected the new President of the Association for the next two years, and Joe Lloyd from Reynolds County would replace him on the SCCCA legislative committee. He stated that he would be attending the Central Region Workforce Investment Board Caucus in Jefferson City on Wednesday. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley stated absentee voting continues through Monday, April 1st, and she said that the last day to mail out an absentee ballot will be this Wednesday. The courthouse will be open from 8:00 AM until noon this Saturday, March 30th for those who need to vote absentee. At the last meeting, the commission accepted the low propane bid of $1.49 per gallon from MFA Oil Co. for the courthouse. The next meeting of the Commission will be Thursday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.

The Salem Park Board held their meeting at the Salem Community Center at the Armory last Tuesday afternoon. Park and Recreation Director Greg Nash discussed the Youth Basketball program and that there was a shortage of coaches in the 3rd and 4th grade level that caused the city to return money to those who were unable to play in that age group. The delay in trying to find coaches caused the program to start late. A suggestion was made to allow the coach’s son or daughter to participate free if the parent wants to be the head coach, and Nash and City Administrator Clayton Lucas thought that was something to be considered. Nash reported that there were 225 children signed up for the spring soccer program and he felt that there would be about 240 once the season started. He said that the program was three or four coaches short at this time but didn’t see that as a problem that could be corrected. The soccer fields will be prepared for the year and the bleachers will be moved to the fields for the start of the season. Nash did state that baseball signups would be held in the early part of April and there may be some crossover of seasons with soccer and baseball this year. City Administrator Lucas said that the city work crews would not pay $1,800 for a new flagpole in St. James, instead the city will use the one from the old middle school for the softball field at the Salem City Park. Lucas then reported that the pool house is getting a full makeover with re-painting, re-signing, redoing the benches, installing new bathroom stalls and more on the inside, and re-painting on the outside. He stated that the city would have to install a new ADA compliant lift in the pool. Lucas went on to say that the Frisbee Golf Course will still need to be set up with the help of the Park Board and the supplies are being acquired. He said that a new sidewalk was being installed between the softball fields at the Salem City Park that connect the whole park. It will be measured so that people will know how long the sidewalk is and what it will take to walk a mile. A discussion was held about the use of the multipurpose room at the Salem Community Center@the Armory after school. Healthy Dent County Executive Director Sherry Lea said that the hours of the gym area are posted indicating when the “after school” program is taking place as well as when other entities have rented the gym area. She said that the after school program using the gym area is a temporary situation until the renovations are made in a few months, but she also indicated that since the gym is closed for the after school program, damages to the multi-purpose room have diminished drastically with Parks and Recreation Director Greg Nash agreeing. Park Board President S.N. Ball said the next meeting would be held in June and the meeting adjourned.
