This past Saturday night in Arnold, Missouri, 22 contestants from across the United States competed in the first official regional Elvis Presley Enterprises sanctioned Graceland Elvis Tribute Artist contest. After five hours of competition, Salem’s own Richard Vickers was named the first Regional First Place Champion and was presented with a check for $1,000 along with a trophy. Vickers and all the top winners of all the qualifying rounds will go on to compete in the Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest Finals on August 17 at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Memphis, where the "Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist of 2007" will be selected. The winner there will get the chance to perform on the Elvis Cruise that will be held August 30
th through September 3
rd. Vickers will be performing as Elvis with the TLC Band this Saturday at 2:00 and at 7:00 at the Salem High School Gym. This is a fund raising event for the Salem Area Community Betterment Association. Preferred seats for both shows are sold out, but good seats are still available. They are $15 for adults and $10 for students in advance. Tickets can be purchased with your debit or credit Visa, American Express, Mastercard or Discover Card by calling the Elvis hotline at 729-8684. Tickets can also be purchased at the Visitor’s Center at 200 South Main or the Salem TCRC in the Salem Freedom Activity Center. This show is designed for the entire family and will feature a tremendous amount of local talent that will perform songs from the 60’s through today!
The Salem Memorial District Hospital Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at the hospital library Thursday evening. Controller Stephanie Wofford reported that the summary of operations for the month of February showed an excess of revenues over expenses of $135,689 for the month with a gain from operations of just over $34,000. Director of Nursing Carol Lacy gave statistics for the month and there were 698 emergency room visits, 134 ambulance runs, 17 surgeries, 324 clinical visits, 235 home health visits, 7,586 lab tests, 1,057 radiological procedures, 24 MRI scans, 266 CT Scans, 102 dialysis procedures visits and 334 rehabilitation procedures were performed. Hospital Administrator Dennis Pryor said that the Hospital Auxiliary will have a bake sale on April 5th and they are taking orders through March 29th, and they will hold a BBQ during hospital week that will be open to the public. Pryor explained that USDA has not yet make a final decision regarding the Physicians Office Building loan, but it is expected any day. In the strategic planning update, Pryor stated that there was one contact and one visit by a physician during the month. The board then approved changes to the medical staff bylaws before addressing purchases. The board approved a budgeted purchase of two vascular dopplers for ambulances at a cost of $1,376 from Huntleigh Healthcare, approved the budgeted purchase of two stretcher decent control systems for the ambulances from Paramed for $1,445, approved the budgeted purchase of two vestibules from Dent County Glass at a cost of $8,685, and approved a budgeted purchase of a cardiopulmonary ABG machine from Siemens for $17,915. They also approved a non-budgeted purchase of podiatry equipment from Osteomed for $16,773. The board then went into closed session.
An accident occurred at 11:00 Thursday evening in Texas County on Route C about four miles north of Licking. According to the highway patrol report, a 1994 Chevrolet driven by 51-year old Vickie Smith of Licking was traveling northbound on Route C, ran off the right side of the roadway, came back onto the roadway and ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned. Smith suffered serious injury and was transported by helicopter to St. John’s Regional in Springfield. She was not wearing a seat restraint at the time of the accident. The Chevrolet was totaled in the accident and was towed from the scene by A1 Towing of Houston.
The Dent County Fire Protection District held a Board of Directors meeting Thursday evening. In new business, the Board opened and reviewed sealed bids for a Ladder truck. The Board accepted the bid of $5,056 from Clinton Jadwin for a Ladder truck. The meeting was then adjourned.
The Dent County Extension Council will conduct a meeting tonight on the 2nd floor of the Judicial Building beginning at 5:30 PM. There will be an election of officers and discussion about Dent County Farm Families. For more information, call Joyce at 729-3196.

The Salem Baseball Tigers took second place in the SCA Pre-Season Tournament as they lost to the Houston Tigers, 10-9 in eight innings. Salem fought back from a six-run deficit by scoring four runs in the 6th inning and two more in the 7th inning to send the game into extra innings. Matt Patterson had a home run and rove in three runs for Salem who are 2-1 on the year. They will host the Licking Wildcats tomorrow at 4:30 and you can hear that game on KSMO Radio.
Jay Payton had three hits and Kevin Millar finished with two RBI as the Baltimore Orioles beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-5. Scott Spiezio went 2-for-3 with two doubles and Jim Edmonds went 0-for-1 with a walk in his spring debut for the Cardinals. Gary Bennett finished 3-for-3 with two RBI. St. Louis starter Anthony Reyes allowed five runs in four innings.
Kevin Mench went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Kansas City Royals, 7-6. Joey Gathright had an inside-the-park homer in the fifth. Milwaukee starter Jeff Suppan threw 5 2/3 innings, giving up six runs -- three earned -- on eight hits while striking out four and walking two. Gathright also singled in the first, walked in the third and stole two bases for the Royals. Kansas City starter Zack Greinke allowed three runs -- one earned -- on four hits and one walk while striking out seven.
The Kansas City Royals have demoted shortstop Angel Berroa to their triple-A affiliate in Omaha, the team announced on Saturday. The 2003 AL Rookie of the Year had struggled mightily at the plate this spring, striking out 14 times and drawing no walks in just 38 at-bats. A deal which brought Tony Pena, Jr. over from Atlanta on Friday made the decision an easy one for manager Buddy Bell, who named Pena the club's starting shortstop.
Manny Malhotra registered a goal and an assist to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets past the St. Louis Blues, 4-1, at Nationwide Arena. Jason Bacashihua allowed all four goals on 26 shots for the Blues, who have dropped three of their last four games. Doug Weight tallied the lone goal for St. Louis. On Saturday, Weight had the game-winning goal in a shoot-out win over the Detroit Red Wings, 3-2. The Blues will face Columbus again on Tuesday night.

Funeral services for Shilynne Johnson of Vichy, age 18, will be held Wednesday at 1:00 at the James and Gahr Mortuary in St. James. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 on Tuesday. Interment will be in the High Gate Cemetery in High Gate, Missouri.
