In closed session last Monday at the district administrative offices, the Salem R-80 Board of Education unanimously voted to hire the probationary teachers for the William Lynch Elementary, Upper Elementary, Junior High and Senior High Schools for the 2013/2014 school year with the exception of Pamela Middleton at the Junior High School. A motion was then made to hire coaches. The board employed Diana Bermudez as Head Volleyball coach, Jake Reardon as Head Softball coach, Phil McClintock as Head Boy’s Basketball coach, Jake Reardon as Head Girl’s Basketball coach, Phil McClintock as Junior High Girl’s Basketball coach, Brian McNamee as Head Boy’s Track coach, Terrie Welch as Head Girl’s Track coach, Phil McClintock as Head Golf coach, Will Hubbs as Head Tennis coach, Erin Blankenship as High School Cheerleading coach, and a number of assistant coaches were also hired for each sport. Those coaches hired with one board member abstaining from the vote were Phillip Karr as Head Baseball coach, Jody Heavin as High School Cheerleading coach, and Brian McNamee as Head Football coach. Phillip Karr was also rehired as the Athletic Director for the next school year. The meeting was then adjourned.
The Dent County Commissioners met Thursday morning for their regular meeting at the Dent County Courthouse. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell reported that repairs would be made, materials would be added and patch grading would be done on Dent County Roads 5080 and 6230. Purcell indicated that brush would be cut on Dent County Road 5615 and that road signs would be repaired or replaced. He also said that Dent County Road 5615 in the Bunker area above the Sugar Tree Creek has an area that is 25 feet long and about three feet wide that has shifted. This has caused orange road cones to be placed on the road creating a single lane width. Persons using the road are asked to do so with caution and yield to oncoming traffic. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that patch grading would be done in the Boss area, and that brush was going to be cut on Dent County Roads 2150 and 2370. He said materials would be added to county road 4430 and that drainpipes will be cleaned out under the bridges over Dent County Roads 2090 and 3220. Larson reported that the backup generator at Oak Grove Baptist Church was tested last Friday, and he spoke with Spencer Jones with MoDOT about the bridge for Dent County Road 3210 and they are still working toward allowing the county to use BRO funds for that purpose. Larson wanted to inform the public the county commission is aware that many county roads are in need of repair, but grading now will do more damage to the roads than good. He said all the county can do now is patch grading and that once the weather breaks and the roads dry out, the road crews will be giving their full attention to getting the roads back in good shape. The commissioners approved the appointment of Karen Barred to the Dent County Health Board to replace the late Patty Schultz. Dent County Treasurer Denita Williams brought in the CART report for February and year to date, the county is down$1,334.29 from the first two months of last year. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley said that the last day to mail out an absentee ballot will be Wednesday, and that the courthouse will be open from 8:00 AM until noon on Saturday, March 30th. The next meeting of the Dent County Commission will be this morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and it is open to the public.
An accident occurred at 4:50 Sunday afternoon in Dent County on private property about nine miles east of Salem. According to the highway patrol report, 14-year old Kylie Henry of Salem lost control of a 2002 Yamaha Grizzly ATV and it overturned. Henry and an occupant, 14-year old Raishelle Mitchell of Salem, suffered minor injuries and were taken to the Salem Memorial District Hospital by a private vehicle. They were not wearing safety devices at the time of the accident. The Yamaha sustained minor damage and was removed by the owner.

th at 2:56 in the afternoon, an officer was contacted at the station in reference a stolen license plate. The investigation revealed that someone took a license plate from a red 1996 Ford truck parked in the 800 block of East Center. Later that evening at 10:10, a vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation. That investigation led to the arrest of a 29-year old male passenger of Salem on an out of state fugitive arrest warrant. He was incarcerated pending extradition. On Saturday, March 9
th at 5:35 in the evening, officers of the Salem Police Department, assisted by the Dent County Sheriffs Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol, served a search warrant at a residence in the 900 block of North Jackson. As a result of the search warrant, a 48-year old Salem male was taken into custody for distribution of a controlled substance, possession of amphetamines, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was incarcerated pending the application for warrants. On Sunday, March 10
th at 3:19 in the afternoon, an officer was dispatched to a residence in the 600 block of North Washington in reference to a domestic disturbance. The investigation revealed that a 25-year old Salem female had assaulted a 26-year old Union male. She was arrested, issued a summons to appear in court, and released. The Salem Tiger Tennis team is scheduled to play at Richland today. That match is set for 4:00, weather permitting.
The Salem Tigers Baseball game scheduled with Licking for Tuesday. March 26th had been postponed due to wet grounds. No makeup date has yet been set.
Jaroslov Halak posted his third shutout of the season as the St. Louis Blues blanked the Edmonton Oilers, 3-0, on Saturday. Alexander Steen scored once and also had an assist, while Chris Stewart and T.J. Oshie added one goal apiece. On Sunday, Jarome Iginla scored the game-winning goal with 7:02 remaining to lift the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues. T.J. Oshie and Vladimir Sobotka tallied for the Blues, who had won four of their last five entering the contest. The Blues will play the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.
Zach Lutz had two hits with a two-run homer to go along with three RBI to push the New York Mets past the St. Louis Cardinals, 10-7, on Sunday. Jon Jay, Allen Craig and Pete Kozma each drove in two runs apiece for the Cardinals, who saw starter Jake Westbrook last six innings and allow three runs on five hits. The Cardinals will play the Twins this afternoon at 12:05.
Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer and Jeff Francoeur had two doubles and a pair of RBI to lead the Kansas City Royals to an 8-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. Chris Getz, Jarrod Dyson and Alex McClure each drove in a run for the Royals, who saw starter Jeremy Guthrie give up two runs on six hits while striking out eight over six innings. The Royals will play the Dodgers tonight at 8:05.

Funeral services for Tommy King of Salem, age 89, will be Wednesday at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday from 10:00 until time of service. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Funeral services for Raymond Lee Stroup of Cuba, formerly of Steelville, will be held at 1:00 Thursday at the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home in Steelville. Visitation will be held from 11:00 in the morning until service time. Interment will be in the Martin-Trask Cemetery in Cherryville. Memorials may be given to the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home for funeral expenses.
A Celebration of Life service will be held for Ronald David Graham of Salem, age 61, on Saturday, at 12:00 (noon) at the Gladden Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Graham Family. All arrangements are under the direction of the Wilson Mortuary of Salem.
