The Dent County Commissioners regular meeting was held Thursday morning at the Dent County Courthouse. At the meeting, Prosecutor Sid Pearson talked with the commissioners about a part of the former railroad right-of-way that was deeded back to the City of Salem, and was then Quit-Claim deeded to the county. The odd thing is that part of the property is in Crawford County. Pearson said that a Reverend Finder would like to the have the property deeded to him and has hired an attorney. The commission authorized Pearson to meet with the attorney to discuss the issue and make a recommendation back to them. In the road report, District 1 Commissioner Dennis Purcell said that the grader that was down is back in operation, and that grading would be done on Dent County Roads 2450, 2470, 4210, 5380 and 5400. He said that rock would be added to Dent County Road 5680 and brush would be cut on Dent County Road 6240. District 2 Commissioner Gary Larson stated that grading is going to be done on Dent County Roads 2270, 2510, 2515, 2535, 2630, 4290 and 4300. He also reported that brush was going to cut on Dent County Roads 4040 and 4280. Presiding Commissioner Darrell Skiles said that Senate Bill 299 concerning the Missouri Department of Conservation being responsible for damages caused by the re-introduction of elk into Missouri has been passed by the Senate Ag Committee and will be sent to the full Senate. Dent County Clerk Angie Curley reported that absentee voting for the April 5^th election will continue until April 4^th and the office will also be open on Saturday, April 2^nd from 8:00 to noon to vote absentee. Ballots can also still be mailed out until March 30^th. At the last meeting, the commissioners agreed to increase the insurance coverage on the Judicial Building to $1,150,000. The increased coverage will cost an additional $585 in premiums. The next meeting of the Dent County Commissioners will be Monday morning at 9:00 at the courthouse and the meeting is open to the public.

The Salem R-80 Board of Education held their regular meeting at the district administrative offices. The board first held a calendar hearing to discuss any changes in the school calendar for next year including being off the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and not going to Cabool for professional development in the fall. Superintendent Cindy Rumpf stated that Summer School packets would be sent home with children in pre kindergarten through the 5^th grade. Summer school is scheduled for May 31^st through June 16^th, but if the state does not fund it, Rumpf said that it would probably be cancelled. She reported that the Salem busses were inspected and all but one of them passed. The one bus that didn’t pass had too much play in the tie-rod and the bus will be repaired today. Rumpf said that a planning meeting for the district is going to be held Tuesday at 7:00 at the Junior High Library to develop a plan that sets goals and objectives for the next five years. The meeting is open to the public and she would appreciate any input. The board set an organizational meeting for April 11^th at 6:00 after the municipal election to swear in the new board members and elect board officers. The board approved the MSBA Policy Service Agreement for $1,710 before approving the 2011-2012 school calendar. The board approved no raise on the base of the 2011-2012 school salary schedule, and teachers returning to the district will see an average raise of about 1.5%. The board accepted the resignation of Business Teacher Stephanie Billington, ISS Instructor Ryan Billington, and 5^th Grade Teacher Rebecca Schnelling. They also accepted the retirement of 7^th grade math teacher Susan Jordan effective the end of this year. The board then approved bus transportation for Project Graduation before going into closed session.

US Representative Jo Ann Emerson announced that her staff would visit with constituents throughout the 8^th District at Congressional Connection Stops. The Congressional Connection Stop in our area will be held on Monday, March 28^th. The stop will be at in Salem at the Salem Area Chamber Commerce on Main Street from 10:00 to 11:00 am.

The Salem Baseball Tigers defeated Thayer at Mountain View last night by the final score of 10-7. Ryan Smith picked up the win and Andrew Conaway the save. Brady Floyd and Devon Sutterfield led the offense as each player had two doubles in the come from behind win. Salem is 2-1 on the year and will host the Licking Wildcats Tuesday at 4:30 in Salem.

The City of Salem Summer Youth Baseball- Softball-T-Ball sign-ups will be held today in the front lobby of the Salem Freedom Activity Center located on West Rolla Road from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. There will be a sign-up on Saturday, March 26th in the front lobby of the Salem High School Gym from 8:30 am to noon. This league is for ALL boys and girls who are 4 - 14 years of age as of May 1, 2011. The cost is $20 per child. For more information, contact Parks & Recreation Director Greg Nash at 729-6290.

Jaroslav Halak needed to make just 12 saves for his sixth shutout of the year as St. Louis beat Edmonton at Scottrade Center. T.J. Oshie notched a goal and assist for the Blues. Matt D'Agostini, Chris Stewart and Adam Cracknell supplied late tallies for the home team. The Blues play Minnesota Saturday night at 7:00 on KSMO Radio.

Angel Pagan's three-run shot in the fourth inning was one of five New York home runs, as the Mets rocked the Cardinals, 16-3. Yadier Molina finished with two hits and an RBI, while Skip Schumaker hit a run-scoring double for the Cardinals. Jaime Garcia was rocked in defeat for 14 hits and 10 runs, only three earned, in four frames. The Cards will play Florida tomorrow and the New York Mets Sunday at 11:45 and both games can be heard on KSMO Radio.

Melky Cabrera hit a two-run homer and drove in the decisive run in the top of the ninth, lifting the Royals to a 9-8 spring training victory over the Mariners. Lance Zawadzki and Alex Gordon also ripped two-run shots for Kansas City, while Pedro Feliz hit two RBI doubles. Royals’ starter Bruce Chen allowed four runs on five hits in six innings.

Funeral services and visitation for Aaron Charles Sharp of Salem, age 37, will be private and will be held today at 1:00. Interment will be in the Jadwin Cemetery. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.

Funeral services for Mary Lenn Nash of Salem, age 76, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the Dent County Memorial Chapel in Salem. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 today. Interment will be in the Allen Cemetery in Raymondville.

Funeral mass for Lavern Elizabeth Wevers of St. James, age 85, will be held Saturday morning at 11:00 at the St. Michael's Catholic Church in Steelville. All arrangements are under the direction of the Britton-Bennett Funeral Home of Steelville.

Funeral services for Wayne Cameron of St. Joseph, age 88, will be held Sunday at 2:00 at the Fox Chapel in Licking. Visitation will be held Saturday from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Fox Funeral Home in Licking.

Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Inman of Salem, age 96, will be held Monday at 1:00 at the Wilson Mortuary of Salem. Visitation will be held Sunday night from 6:00 to 8:00. Internment will be in the Dry Fork Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Salem Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.

Carol J. Elliott passed away Friday, March 25th at the age of 80. No funeral arrangements have yet been sent. All arrangements are under the direction of the James and Gahr Mortuary of Salem.
